• The World Immunization Week (WIW) 2021 (April 24-30) will show how vaccination connects us to the people, goals and moments that matter to us most, helping improve the health of everyone, everywhere throughout life.
• 2021 Theme: “Vaccines bring us closer”.

World Malaria Day – 25 April

• World Malaria Day (WMD) is observed on 25 April every year. The day aimed at taking urgent action in the control of the deadly disease. Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is caused by the bites of infected mosquitoes.
• It is the Female Anopheles mosquitoes who spread the Plasmodium parasite through their saliva, which causes malaria. The day is celebrated to spread awareness about malaria disease and to promote efforts to prevent malaria.
• 2021 Theme- “Reaching the zero malaria target.”

International Delegate’s Day – 25 April

• International Delegate’s Day marks the anniversary of the first day of the San Francisco Conference, also known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization. On 25 April 1945, delegates from fifty countries came together for the first time in San Francisco.

World Intellectual Property Day – 26 April

• World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April. The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”.
• 2021 Theme: “IP and SMEs: Taking Your Ideas to Market”.

International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace – 26 April

• The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is observed globally on 26 April. The day was established by United Nations General Assembly in 2018 for Peace.
• The day aims to spread knowledge about the advantages of multilateralism and diplomacy for peace, including through educational and public awareness-raising activities.

India and French navy bilateral exercise ‘Varuna-2021’ takes place in the Arabian Sea

• The 19th edition of the Indian and French Navy bilateral exercise ‘VARUNA-2021’ is scheduled to be conducted in the Arabian Sea from 25th to 27th April 2021.
• The three-day exercise will see high tempo-naval operations at sea, including advanced air defence and anti-submarine exercises, intense fixed and rotary wing flying operations, tactical manoeuvres, surface and anti-air weapon firings, underway replenishment and other maritime security operations.

Google announces Rs. 135 crore aid to India to fight Covid-19

• Google has announced Rs. 135 crore in new funding for India to help get urgent medical supplies, including oxygen and testing equipment. This includes 112 crore in Ad Grants to local health authorities and non-profits for more language coverage options.
• The funding includes two grants, first is to GiveIndia to provide cash assistance to families hit hardest by the crisis and the second will go to UNICEF to help get urgent medical supplies.

Shivalik Small Finance Bank commences operations

• Uttar Pradesh-based Shivalik Small Finance Bank has commenced operations as a small finance bank with effect from 26 April.
• It is the first bank in the country to transition from an Urban Cooperative Bank into an SFB under the RBI’s ‘Scheme on Voluntary Transition of Urban Co-operative Bank into a Small Finance Bank’, issued on 27 September 2018.
• Shivalik Mercantile Co-operative Bank was granted in-principle approval by the RBI for transition into a Small Finance Bank on 6 January 2020.

Arun Raste to take over as MD and CEO of National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange

• Arun Raste, executive director of the National Dairy Development Board, will take over as the new Managing Director & CEO of agriculture-focused National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX). His appointment is valid for five years. He is currently associated with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) as an Executive Director.

Five Jammu and Kashmir gram panchayats bag National Panchayat Awards 2021

• Gram panchayat Kangroosa, block Kandi Rafiabad, Baramulla, and Gram panchayat Hakermulla, block Soibugh, Budgam won the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar (DDUPSP).
• Gram panchayat Achabal A, block Nadihal, Baramulla bagged the Child-Friendly Gram Panchayat Award (CFGPA).

Winners of 93^rd Academy Awards or Oscar awards

• The Academy Awards popularly known as the Oscars are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. They are regarded as the most famous and prestigious awards in the entertainment industry around the world. Given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements, as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.
• The first Academy Awards presentation was held on 16 May 1929, at a private dinner function at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people.

Renowned Classical singer Rajan Mishra passes away at 70

• Classical singer Rajan Mishra, a Padma Bhushan awardee passed away due to complications caused by COVID-19 at a hospital.
• Rajan Mishra was a famous classical singer from ”Banaras Gharana”. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the field of art in 2007.

Nuclear scientist Krishnamurthy Santhanam passes away

• Krishnamurthy Santhanam was a nuclear scientist and the field director of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) during the tests of Pokhran-II. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1999.
• Krishnamurthy Santhanam will be remembered for his remarkable efforts and contribution in the field of science and technology in India. He was associated with institutions like DRDO, DAE and IDSA. His role in successful 1998 nuclear tests was noteworthy.

Supreme Court judge MM Shantanagoudar passes away at 62

• Supreme Court judge Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar passed away due to a lung infection.
• He was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2017 from the Kerala high court, where he served as the chief justice. He had a tenure in the apex court till 5 May 2023.

Former University Grants Commission Chairman Arun Nigavekar passes away at 79

• Professor Arun Nigavekar, former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) passed away in his Pune residence.
• A noted Physicist and educationist, he was the chairman of UGC from 2000 to 2005 and the Vice-chancellor of the Savitribai Phule Pune University from 1998 to 2000.

Former Maruti MD Jagdish Khattar passes away at 79

• Former Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki and founder of Carnation, an automotive sales and service company Jagdish Khattar passed away due to a cardiac arrest.
• Khattar was the managing director of Maruti Udyog Limited from 1993 until his retirement in 2007. He joined Maruti in 1993 as director of marketing, later became an MD in 1999 first as a government nominee and then in May 2002 as the Suzuki Motor Corporation nominee.

CSK chairman and cement industry veteran L Sabaretnam passes away at 80

• Director and chairman of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited, and a cement industry veteran L Sabaretnam passed away due to a brief illness.
• He served in Chettinad Cement Corporation and was Executive Director of the Company for a long period.

Indian women’s recurve team bags Gold medal at Archery World Cup

• In the Archery World Cup, the Indian women’s recurve team including Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari won a gold medal in Guatemala. Indian trio shot 27 to edge out their Mexican rivals by one point and claim their first World Cup team gold after seven years.
