Minorities Rights Day (India) – 18 December
- Minorities Rights Day is observed in India on 18 December to ensure that constitutionally-assured rights of religious minorities in the country are safeguarded.
- The United Nations declared the Minorities Rights Day on 18 December 1992.
- The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) was established under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
- Union Ministry of Minority Affairs was set up in 2006.
International Migrants Day – 18 December
- International Migrants Day is observed on 18 December to tackle the problem and challenges of global migration.
- The theme for International Migrants Day 2021 is ‘Harnessing the potential of human mobility.
- This day was established to recognise the importance of bilateral, regional and global cooperation in the area of migration.

Union Government has given in-principle approval for setting up six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur
- The Union Government has given in-principle approval for setting up six nuclear reactors of 1,650 MW each in technical cooperation with France at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.
- It will be India’s largest nuclear power generating site with a total capacity of 9,900 MW.
- The nuclear power plants have so far generated about 755 billion units of electricity, saving about 650 million tons of CO2

Tata Motors signs an MoU with Maharashtra Government to set up a vehicle scrapping facility
- Tata Motors signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maharashtra Government to establish Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Maharashtra.
- This proposed scrappage centre in Maharashtra will have the capacity to recycle up to 35,000 passenger and commercial automobiles each year.
- The MoU was inked through the Industries, Energy and Labour Department, which will support in facilitating the necessary approvals as per the rules and regulations for setting up of this facility.
- Tata Motors had earlier signed an MoU with the Gujarat Government for setting up a scrapping facility in Ahmedabad.

- Tamil Nadu Government has announced ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ penned by Manonmaniam Sundaranar as its state anthem.
- This announcement followed a request from Karanthai Thamizh Sangam, which has been reciting this song as Thamizh Thaai Vaazhthu since 1913.
- Tamil Nadu Government announced that this song should be sung before the start of any functions in all educational institutions, universities, government offices, public sector undertakings and other public meetings.
- This song has been sung before the start of all official events for almost 50 years, including those held in state-run and supported educational institutions.

Reserve Bank of India authorises RBL Bank to collect indirect taxes
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has authorised RBL Bank to collect indirect taxes on behalf of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) based on the recommendation from Controller General of Accounts, Union Ministry of Finance and Government of India.
- RBL Bank has been already authorised to collect direct taxes on behalf of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
- RBL Bank can now collect both direct and indirect taxes.

- The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) appointed the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV), Vinod Aggarwal as its Vice-President for 2021–22.
- He replaces the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ashok Leyland Vipin Sondhi, who served as the Vice-President of SIAM from September 2020.

- Indian shooter Avani Lekhara won the ‘Best Female Debut’ award at the 2021 Paralympic Sports Awards for her record-breaking gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
- She became the only female Paralympian to win two medals at the Paralympic Games.
- She clinched India’s first gold medal in the women’s 10 m Air Rifle Standing (SH1) at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, equaling the world record in the process.
- Czech Republic’s Boccia player Adam Peska bagged the ‘Best Male Debut’ award.
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton receives Knighthood
- Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has received Knighthood from Prince Charles at Windsor Castle for his services to motorsport.
- He became the fourth F1 driver to receive the honour after Sir Jackie Stewart in 2001, Sir Stirling Moss in 2000 and Sir Jack Brabham in 1979.
- A Knighthood is an honour given by a British King or Queen for high achievement and services to their country within their industry.
Sachin Tendulkar ranks as the leading Indian sportsperson in the Most Admired Men of 2021 List
- In the list of the world’s most admired sportsperson of 2021, Sachin Tendulkar ranked among the top three behind Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. This list was released by British market research and data analytics firm, YouGov.
- He ranked 12th in the overall list along with Donald Trump (13th), Shahrukh Khan (14th), Amitabh Bachchan (15th) and Virat Kohli (18th).

NASA’s Parker solar probe enters the Sun’s atmosphere for the first time
- NASA’s Parker solar probe entered the Sun’s atmosphere for the first time plunging through the unexplored solar atmosphere known as the corona.
- Parker solar probe was launched in 2018 to explore the mysteries of the Sun by travelling closer to it than any spacecraft before. During the spacecraft’s eighth close visit to the Sun, the Parker solar probe sailed through the corona.
- The Parker solar probe tracked the movement of particles in the solar wind and identified their source, the solar surface.

India successfully test-fires new generation Agni Prime missile from Odisha coast
- India successfully test-fired the new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile ‘Agni P’ from A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- Agni-P is a new generation advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles. It is a two-stage canisterised missile with a range capability between 1000 and 2000 km.
- This was the second test of the Agni Prime missile, which proved the reliable performance of all the advanced technologies integrated into the system.

- Former union minister L. Jalappa passed away at the age of 96.
- He became the Union Minister of Textiles in the Cabinet of former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda from 1996 to 1998.
- He represented Chikballapur in the Lok Sabha four times from 1996 until his political retirement in 2009.
