International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation – 6 February

  • The International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation is observed on 6 February every year to raise awareness about the need to abolish female genital mutilation (FGM).
  • This day has been observed by the United Nations (UN) since 2012.
  • The theme of the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation 2022 is ‘Accelerating investment to end female genital mutation’.
  • In 2008, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launched the world’s largest campaign to eradicate female genital mutilation.

  • He is also holding additional charge as the Director (Technical & Offshore Services) of SCI.

Jens Stoltenberg becomes  the next central bank chief of Norway

  • Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), will be appointed as the next chief of Norway’s central bank, ‘Norges Bank’.
  • He will succeed Oystein Olsen, who is set to retire after holding the position of the chief of Norges Bank since 2011.
  • Jens Stoltenberg served as Norway’s finance minister from 1996 to 2000 and then he served as Norway’s Prime Minister from 2000 to 2001. In 2005, he was re-elected as Norway’s Prime Minister, a position he held for another eight years.

India clinches the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022

  • India clinched the International Cricket Council (ICC) U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022 against England by four wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
  • India has now won the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup for the fifth time since India’s first triumph in 2000.
  • India won the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup titles in 2000 against Sri Lanka, 2008 against South Africa, 2012 against Australia, 2018 against Australia and 2022 against England.

Srilankan cricketer Suranga Lakmal announces retirement from international cricket

  • Former Srilankan Test cricket Suranga Lakmal has announced his retirement from international cricket after the upcoming tour of India in 2022.
  • He made his debut for Sri Lanka in December 2009 and took 109 wickets in 86 One Day International (ODIs), eight wickets in 11 Twenty20 International (T20Is) and 168 wickets in 68 Test matches.
  • He was chosen as Galle’s captain for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament in March 2018 and was also named in Galle’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.

Legendary Singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away

  • Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92.
  • She had lent her voice to thousands of songs in 36 languages.
  • She was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987, the Bharat Ratna in 2001. She is only the second female singer to get the Bharat Ratna, following M. S. Subbulakshmi.
  • In 2007, France bestowed upon her its highest civilian honour, the Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour.
  • She was one of the first Indian playback singers to appear in London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1974.
