TAMIL NADU

1. 16^th legislative assembly begins in Tamil Nadu

• The 16^th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has been summoned to meet for its first session. Governor can summon or prorogue the State legislative assembly.
• The 234 newly elected Members of the legislative Assembly were sworn in by the Pro tem Speaker K.Pichandi.
• The inaugural session was held at Kalaivanar Arangam, at the Omandurar Government Estate instead of the traditional Fort St.George to maintain social distancing and other Covid-19 protocols.

1. 16ஆம் ஆண்டு சட்டமன்றம் தமிழ்நாட்டில் கூடுகிறது

2. Puducherry becomes the fourth Union Territory to provide tapwater connection to all

• Puducherry had become ‘Har Ghar Jal’ Union Territory by ensuring tap connection to every rural home. Puducherry becomes the fourth State/ Union Territory after Goa, Telangana, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands to provide assured tap water supply to every rural home under Jal Jeevan Mission.

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)

• Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a Union Government’s flagship programme, which is implemented in partnership with States/UTs to provide tap water connection to every rural household by 2024.

3. Maharashtra government to offer free treatment to Mucormycosis patients

• Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope, announced that patients of Mucormycosis would be treated free of cost under Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana of the state. The medicines required for the treatment of this disease are expensive, therefore the state has decided to provide free treatment for this disease.

Mucormycosis

• Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection that is now affecting those suffering from Corona virus. It causes blindness or serious illness and even death in some cases. If the disease is not treated early, it can have adverse effects on the respiratory system, brain and eyes.

3. மியூகோர்மைகோசிஸ் நோயாளிகளுக்கு இலவச சிகிச்சை அளிக்க மகாராஷ்டிரா அரசு முடிவுசெய்துள்ளது

• மகாராஷ்டிரா சுகாதார அமைச்சர் ராஜேஷ் டோப், மாநிலத்தின் மகாத்மா புலே ஜன் ஆரோக்கிய யோஜனா திட்டத்தின் கீழ் மியூகோர்மைகோசிஸ் நோயாளிகளுக்கு இலவசமாக சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்படும் என்று அறிவித்தார். இந்த நோய்க்குத் தேவையான மருந்துகள் விலை உயர்ந்தவை, எனவே இந்த நோய்க்கு இலவச சிகிச்சை அளிக்க அரசு முடிவு செய்துள்ளது.

• Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency and SpaceX accepts it for funding DOGE-1 project.

5. Cipla Ltd, Lupin Ltd and Sun Pharma are given license to produce Covid drug Baricitinib

• Cipla Ltd, Lupin Ltd, and Sun Pharma signed a licensing agreement with Eli Lilly to produce Covid drug Baricitinib. They have signed a royalty-free, non-exclusive voluntary license with Eli Lily.
• Baricitinib was issued a restricted emergency use approval by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). It can be used in combination with Remdesiver for the treatment of suspected or laboratory confirmed Covid-19. Baricitinib is a rheumatoid arthritis drug.

6. Indian and Indonesian navies conduct PASSEX off the Arabian Sea

• The Indian and Indonesian Navies conducted Passage Exercise (PASSEX) in the southern Arabian sea.
• The Indian Navy was represented by INS Sharda, an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) with a Chetak helicopter, and the Indonesian Navy was represented by KRI Sultan Hasanudin, a 90 m Corvette.
• The exercise was aimed at improving interoperability and understanding between both the nations, they are regularly conducted by the Indian Navy with units of friendly foreign countries.

7. Reserve Bank of India appoints Jose J Kattoor as the new Executive Director of RBI

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Jose Kattoor as the executive director (ED).
• He will look after human resource management, corporate strategy, budget and rajbhasha departments at the central bank.
• He holds a post-graduate qualification from the Institute of Rural Management of Anand, Bachelor of Law from Gujarat University, and Advanced Management Program (AMP) from Wharton School of Business, Pennsylvania.

8. Renewable energy market outlook

• Renewable energy market outlook was released by International Energy Agency (IEA).

Highlights of Renewable energy market outlook report:

• Global renewable energy grew at the fastest pace in two decades in 2020.
• New renewable energy capacity in 2020 rose by 45% to 280 gigawatts (GW) last year, the largest year-on-year increase since 1999.
• China accounted for 50% of renewable energy capacity growth last year and will account for 45% this year and 58% in 2022, the report said.
• Globally, around 270 GW of new capacity is forecast to be added this year and nearly 280 GW in 2022.
• Governments auctioned 75 GW of offshore and onshore wind, solar photovoltaic and bioenergy capacity last year, up 20% from 2019.

9. Babar Azam and Alyssa Healy named the ICC players of the month for April 2021

• Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2021. Australian women’s team wicketkeeper-batsman Alyssa Healy was bagged the ICC Women’s Player of the month for the month of April.

10. National Technology Day – 11 May

• India observed the 30^th National Technology Day on 11 May 2021 to highlight our country’s advancements in all fields of science and technology.
• National Technology Day every year to mark the anniversary of the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998. The day also marks the day when India’s first-ever indigenous aircraft, Hansa-1, took flight.
• Theme 2021: ‘Science and Technology for a sustainable future’

Pokhran nuclear tests

• India successfully test-fired Operation Shakti missile on 11 May 1997, at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan, the first among the five nuclear tests in Pokhran.
• The test was headed by an aerospace engineer and former President APJ Abdul Kalam. Following the success of the operation, then Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee declared India a nuclear state, making it the sixth country to join the ‘nuclear club’ of nations. Since 1999, May 11 is observed as ‘National Technology Day’.

10. தேசிய தொழில்நுட்ப தினம் – 11 மே

• இந்த சோதனைக்கு விண்வெளி பொறியாளரும் முன்னாள் குடியரசுத் தலைவருமான டாக்டர் ஏ.பி.ஜே. அப்துல் கலாம் தலைமை தாங்கினார். இந்த நடவடிக்கையின் வெற்றியைத் தொடர்ந்து, அப்போதைய பிரதமர் அடல் பீகாரி வாஜ்பாய் இந்தியாவை ஒரு அணுசக்தி நாடாக அறிவித்தார், இது நாடுகளின் “அணுசக்தி அமைப்பில்” சேர்ந்த ஆறாவது நாடானது. 1999 முதல், மே 11 ‘தேசிய தொழில்நுட்ப தினமாக’ அனுசரிக்கப்படுகிறது.
