Before Knowing about Trains, have you learned the concept the Time & Distance. If not, Click the below link to read the tricks , tips and shortcuts to solve the questions efficiently.
Introduction:
Hi friends today we are going to discuss on a topic Trains. Remember the type conversion and proportion from the previous article it will same for this article too. There are 5 types of problems .
#1. Type 1:
BASED ON TIME, SPEED AND DISTANCE WITH TYPE CONVERSION:
- A train covers a distance of 936km in 13 hours. What is the speed of the train express in m/sec?
Speed=Distance/time
=936/13
Speed =72km/hr
Type Conversion (km/hr m/sec):
=72*(5/18)
Speed =20m/sec
TRY:
1.A train covers a distance of 1000 km in 5 hrs, At what time the train would reach the destination if he would increase his speed by 100% in order to cover a distance which is twice the distance covered by the train previously?
a)5hr b)6hr c)7hr d)8hr
# .2 TYPE 2:
BASED ON LENGTH:
1. If the train cross a bridge whose length is 600m and cross a pole in 48sec when it travels at the velocity of 36km/hr.Then how long will it take to cross a stationery train whose length is twice the length of the moving train?
Bridge(600m)
36km/hr is converted to m/sec 36*(5/18)=10m/sec.
Length=Speed*Time=48*10=480m.
Stationary train whose length is twice that of moving train =2(480)=960m
Time taken to cross a stationary train=Distance/Speed=(960+480)/10=1440/10=144sec
TRY:
1.Train crosses a stationary train whose length is equal to twice the length of the bridge and the length of the bridge is twice the length of the moving train which cross the pole in 60sec when travelling at the rate of 54km/hr. What is the ratio between time taken by the moving train to cross the bridge and the stationary train?.
A)3:4 B)2:3 c)3:5 D)1:2
2.Running at a speed of 60km/hr,a train passed through a 1.5km long tunnel in 2min.What is the length of the train?
a)250m b)500m c)1000m d)1500m
#. 3 TYPE 3:
BASED ON TRAINS REACHING LATE AND EARLY:
- If a train runs at 40km/hr, it reaches its destination late by 11 minutes but if it runs at 50km/hr. It is late by 5mins only. The distance travelled by the train is?
LCM 40,50=200KM
Let it usually reach at 9AM
Time =Distance/Time
-
Distance Speed Time 200 40 5hr 200 50 4hr
5hrs -4hrs=1hr =200km
9.11AM -9.05AM=6 min=20km
2.If a train runs at a rate of 60km/hr, it reaches its destination early by 30 min and if it runs at a rate of 40 km/hr then it reaches 30mins late Then what is the distance travelled by the train?
LCM 60,40=60KM
Let its correct time =9AM
-
Distance Speed Time 60km 60km/hr 1hr 60km 40km/hr 1hr30min
1hr 30min – 1hr =30min=60km
8.30 a.m. 9.30 a.m.= 60mins=120km
TRY:
1)A train travels from Coimbatore to Chennai at the rate of 60km/hr and reaches 15 minutes late and when the same train travels at the rate of 120km/hr then it reaches 5 minutes late, then what is the distance between Coimbatore and Chennai?
a)60km b)20km c)80km d)40km
2)If a train runs at 5/6 of its original speed,then it reaches the station 10 min late. Then find out the usual time taken by train to cover the distance/
a)40 min b)45min c)50min d)55min
#.4 TYPE 4:
BASED ON AVERAGES:
1.When a train travels from Delhi to Mumbai at the rate 120km/hr and return back at the rate of 180km/hr then what is the average speed of the train?
Average Speed=2*120*180/(120+180)
=144km/hr
2.The train covers the certain distance at the rate of 20km/hr,120km/hr and 60km/hr then what is its average speed?
Average Speed when 3 speeds are given:
=(3*20*120*60)/((20*120)+(120*60)+(20*60))
Average Speed=40km/hr.
TRY:
When a train travels a certain distance, the 1st part is covered at the rate of 40km/hr 2nd part is covered at the 40km/hr and the 3rd part is covered at the rate of 60km/hr. What is its average speed?
a)45km/hr b)50km/hr c)55km/hr d)60km/hr
#.5 TYPE 5:
BASED ON DIRECTION:
1.A train starts its journey from Mumbai to Goa with a speed of 120km/hr and another train moves in same direction whose velocity180km/hr. Find the difference between them after travelling 5hrs?
A(180km/hr) , B(120km/hr) Same Direction(180-120=60)
After travelling 5hrs it can cross 60*5=300km
2.One local and another express train were proceeding in the same direction on parallel tracks at 29km/hr and 65km/hr respectively.The driver of the former noticed that it took exactly 16s for the faster train to pass by him.What is the length of the faster train?
Speed 1 | Speed 2 | Relative Speed (Same Direction) |
29km/hr | 65km/hr | 65-29=36km/hr |
Type conversion:
36km/hr 36*(5/18)=10m/sec
It is said that the former train driver noticed the faster train which pass by 16s
=16*10=160m
TRY
1.A train moving from Chennai to Bangalore with a speed of 120 km/hr and another train travelling from Bangalore to Chennai with a speed of 150 km/hr, where the distance between them is 2160km then at what time they both meet after its starting point, if they start at 8AM?
- 3PM B)4PM C)5PM D)6PM
(Hint:relative speed when they are travelling in opposite direction=sum of speed)
2.Two trains 121m long and 99m long are running in opposite directions,first at 40km/hrand the second at 32km/hr.In what time will they completely cross each other from the moment they meet?
a)10s b)11s c)13s d)14s
3.Two train of length 250m and 140m are running on parallel lines in the same direction at 58km/hr and 32km/hr respectively.Find the time taken by the slower train to pass the driver of the faster one?
a)58s b)54s c)52s d)48s
4.Two trains leaves NewDelhi at the same time.One travels towards north at 60km/hr and other travels towards South at 40km/hr.After how many hours will the trains be 150km apart?
a)3/2hr b)4/3hr c)3/4hr d)15/2hr.

Type 1 practice question 1 answer 5 hr. Is it correct admin?
Hi Mam,
Yeah the answer for the try question 1 is 5hrs.Keep up the Good work mam
Plz solve this Mam
1)A train travels from Coimbatore to Chennai at the rate of 60km/hr and reaches 15 minutes late and when the same train travels at the rate of 120km/hr then it reaches 5 minutes late, then what is the distance between Coimbatore and Chennai?
Hi mam,
Total Distance is unknown so lcm of two speeds=120 km
Time of 1st train=120/60=2 hours
Time of 2nd train=120/120=1 hours
2-1=1 hr=120 km
Difference=9.15-9.05=10 minutes
60 minutes=120 km
10 minutes=20 km
Therefore the distance between them is 20 km
Pls solve this

1.Train crosses a stationary train whose length is equal to twice the length of the bridge and the length of the bridge is twice the length of the moving train which cross the pole in 60sec when travelling at the rate of 54km/hr. What is the ratio between time taken by the moving train to cross the bridge and the stationary train?.
Hi Mam,
Solution:
Length of the Moving Train=60*(54*5/18)=900 Metre
Given that,
Length of the Bridge is twice the length of the moving train=2(900)=1800 Metre
Length of the Stationary Train is twice the length of the bridge=2(1800)=3600 Metre
Now,
Time taken by the moving train to cross the bridge=Total distance/Speed
=Length of the bridge + length of the Moving Train/Speed
=1800+900/15
=2700/15
=180 sec
Time taken by the moving train to cross the Stationary Train=Total distance/Speed
=Length of the Stationary Train+ length of the Moving Train/Speed
=3600+900/15
=4500/15
=300 sec
Ratio =180:300
=3:5
