NATIONAL NEWS


Centre raised its foreign aid to Nepal from Rs.750 crore to Rs.1,050 crore in the 2019-20 budget

  • The Indian government has raised the foreign aid to Nepal from Rs.750 crore in 2018 to Rs.1,050 crore in the 2019-20 Budget. It is an increase of 40%. Due to the 2015 Madhesi agitation, anti-India sentiments are growing in Nepal. Despite this, India never faltered its aids to Nepal.
  • During a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal PM K.P.Sharma Oli in May, India committed to expediting a few pending projects that India is pursuing for infrastructure development in Nepal. India is engaged in creating Arun-III, a 900-MW hydroelectric project, in Nepal.
  • India and Nepal are also partners in various road connectivity projects under BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) and BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal Initiative).

AYUSH, MeitY ministries collaborates for digitisation of AYUSH sector

  • Ministry of AYUSH (MOA) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) signed MOU at New Delhi for collaborating with each other for the digitization of AYUSH Sector.
  • MeitY agreed to advise and give technical support to MOA for planning and development of AYUSH GRID Project. National Health Policy 2017 and e-governance initiative of Ministry of AYUSH aims to digitize the entire AYUSH leading to transformation in the field of health care delivery at all levels.
  • In addition to greater research, education, delivery of various healthcare programmes and better drug regulations the signing of MOU done by Secretary AYUSH Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha.
  • The vision and utility of AYUSH GRID Project stated that they will be beneficial for all stakeholders of AYUSH. The citizens of the country will help to achieve various national and international goals in healthcare.
  • The internal workflows and processes of hospitals which enables the efficient and online delivery of Health care services across the country. MeitY launched an online information guide called Vikaspedia. It is a portal for the various social sectors including Health. It offers information in 23 languages.

South Central Railway has commissioned the longest electrified tunnel

  • South Central Railway has commissioned the longest electrified tunnel. It measures 6.6 Kms between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations. The tunnel is a part of the recently completed Obulavaripalli–Venkatachalam new railway line.
  • The electrified tunnel is located between Cherlopalli to Rapuru stations of Andhra Pradesh. It is constructed in the shape of ‘Horse Shoe’. New Australian Tunnelling Method (NATM) is used and the cost incurred is Rs.460 crores. The length of the tunnel is 6,660 mts and is in straight alignment.
  • Full length lining is provided with 300 mm thicknessLED lighting are provided at every 10 m intervals inside the tunnel. Spring type Auto Tensioning Device (ATD) of South Korean make is adopted in place of conventional type for maintaining necessary tension in OHE (Overhead line) wires.

Rajya Sabha passed the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2019

  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on 4 June. The Bill was introduced by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan. It allows for the supersession of the Medical Council of India (MCI) by a Board of Governors for a two-year period from 2018 till 2020.
  • The Bill will also allow for the increase in the number of members in the Board of Governors to 12 from the existing seven. As the Bill has been passed by both Houses, it will replace an ordinance that was promulgated on February 21.
  • The panel of eminent professionals will run the scam-tainted Medical Council of India (MCI) so that medical education can be regulated in the best manner. The BoG will have an eminent person that includes directors of AIIMS and PGI, Chandigarh. The board will prevail until a council is constituted. The medical education can be regulated by the introduction of the BoGs in the best manner.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan is to meet the US President Donald Trump on July 22

  • Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan is to meet the US President Donald Trump on July 22. This will be Khan’s first visit to the US since coming to power in 2018. Khan’s visit is after the invitation extended by the US President Trump.
  • The visit the focus will be on further improving the ties between the two countries and important regional matters. The meeting of the two leaders were confirmed after the US State Department designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) as a global terrorist group.
  • Before the meeting, the top 13 leaders of the banned Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD), including its chief and Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, were booked in nearly two dozen cases of terror financing and money laundering. Also, Pakistan helped the United States in the ongoing US-Taliban dialogue.

French lawmakers approve 3% tax on online giants

  • France, the lower house of parliament approved a small, pioneering tax on internet giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook. The French government hopes that other countries will follow suit.
  • The bill foresees a 3 per cent tax on the French revenues of digital companies with global revenues of more than 750 million Euros. The companies pay nearly no tax in countries where they have large sales like France. The bill adopted by the National Assembly sent to the Senate.

Bahrain to partner with UK to pilot new AI guidelines

  • Bahrain has announced that it is to pilot new guidelines by the World Economic Forum (WEF) Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The announcement was made during the WEF Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian, China on 3 July.
  • The Country aims that the project with WEF will build a global knowledge-base that can be used by other governments as AI can deliver huge benefits to citizens.

Centre announces RBI as the regulator of housing finance Companies (HFCs)

 

  • Centre has announced that the Reserve Bank of India will now be the regulator of housing finance Companies (HFCs). The HFC were regulated by the National Housing Bank. 

 

  • It aims to strengthen oversight of the shadow banks and improve their access to funding by providing guarantees for purchases of their assets.

 

  • The government has announced to provide a one-time partial credit guarantee for loan losses to state banks if the bank buy Rs.1 trillion ($14.6 billion) of high-rated pooled assets of non-banking finance companies (NBFCs).

NASA launched an incredible new atomic clock into orbit to navigate distant planets

  • NASA has launched an incredible new atomic clock into orbit on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. It was developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The mission aims to revolutionise how mankind explores the cosmos.
  • The new Deep Space Atomic Clock will be used to navigate distant planets like Mars. A huge improvement would be made in the spacecraft navigation.
  • It is a space-ready upgrade to the atomic clocks which is used on Earth and to the clocks that already fly on satellites like those that provide GPS.
  • The Deep Space Atomic Clock to allow spacecraft travelling in deep space to navigate more autonomously, with less reliance on communication with Earth.

LightSail 2 spacecraft sends it first signals to Earth

  • The Planetary Society said that its crowd funded spacecraft LightSail 2 sent its first signals to Earth on July 2. They also said that the spacecraft is running various tests.
  • The Planetary Society is an American non-governmental, non-profit foundation. LightSail 2 Cube Sat is about the size of a loaf of bread and weighing 5 kilograms. The Solar sailing spacecraft is powered just by the physical force exerted by solar photons.
  • It was launched on June 25 aboard SpaceX’s triple-booster Falcon Heavy rocket. It is orbiting on its own. It was delivered to space aboard Space X’s Falcon Heavy.

Elavenil Valarivan won the gold medal in 10m women’s air rifle at ISSF World Cup 2019

  • Indian shooter Elavenil Valarivan won the gold medal in 10m women’s air rifle event of the season’s first junior ISSF World Cup 2019 on 4 July. She defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lin Ying-Shinto win the title.
  • She shot 249.8 in the women’s final. Her631.4 in the qualification was a new world record. China’s Wang Zeru managed to win the bronze medal with a score of 228.4 in her first World Cup appearance.
  • Elavenil Valarivan is a sport shooter from Cuddalore, Tamilnadu. She had also won a bronze medal at the FISU World Shooting Sport Championship 2019.

Pakistan Cricketer Shoaib Malik announced his retirement from ODI

  • Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket after the country’s final league clash against Bangladesh in World Cup 2019. He will now focus on the T20s.
  • Shoaib Malik is a Pakistani cricketer and former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team from 2007 to 2009.
  • He is an occasional captain of Pakistan national cricket team. He made his One-Day International debut in 1999 against the West Indies and his Test debut in 2001 against Bangladesh.

 

  • Malik is regarded as a flexible player. He is capable of hitting big shots but is also capable of rotating the strike with good placement. He has a strike rate of 80.4 runs per 100 balls.

World Zoonoses Day is observed on 6 July

  • The World Zoonoses Day is observed on 6 July every year. The day is observed to create awareness on zoonotic diseases, how to prevent them and what actions should be taken if it is exposed. Zoonotic diseases are worldwide.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 61% of all human diseases are zoonotic in origin, while 75% of new diseases discovered in the last decade are zoonotic.

 

  • Zoonoses is a word derived from the Greek words zoon (animal) and nosos (ailment). There about 150 known zoonotic diseases. The disease is all about spread of infectious disease between species, done by a vector from animals to humans and from human to other animals.

Veteran industrialist BK Birla passes away in Mumbai

  • Industrialist B.K. Birla, the grandfather of Kumar Mangalam Birla, died in Mumbai on Wednesday, sources said. He was 98. Mr. Birla was the chairman of Century Textiles and Industries, and had been active in business since the age of 15.
  • Specifically, he tapped into opportunities in sectors like cotton, viscose, polyester and nylon yarns, refractory, paper, shipping, tyre cord, transparent paper, spun pipe, cement, tea, coffee, cardamom, chemicals, plywood, MDF Board, according to a profile available online.
  • Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla’s father Aditya Vikram Birla, who died in 1995, was his only son.

Government increased the budget for drug de-addiction measures to Rs 135 crore

  • The union government increased funds allocation for drug de-addiction measures to Rs 135 crore from Rs 33 crore in 2014.
  • Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot on increasing instances of drug addiction among school children in various parts of the country.
  • The minister told the members agreed with their suggestions on the issue. The government made enough provision for punishing drug peddlers in the country.
    The punishment was given for a period of six months to 15 years.
  • There is a fining the culprits responsible for drug menace. There are 135 districts are surveyed by the government to find out the effects of drug addiction among youth.
  • The actions are taken by the government to curb the drug addiction menace
    Gehlot prepared a National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) for the period 2018-2025.
  • As part of the NAPDDR, the ministry is undertaking focused intervention programs in 127 high-risk districts. The Government provided Rs 135 crore for the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) for 2019-20.

Parliament passed Central Educational Institutions (Reservations in Teachers’ Cadre) Bill 2019

  • The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Bill, 2019 passed by the Parliament. The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill after it got passed in Lok Sabha on 1st July 2019.
  • This Bill replaces the “The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Ordinance, 2019”. The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Bill, 2019 holds as one unit restoring earlier reservation system.
  • The main aim of the bill is to implement a 200-point reservation system instead of 1 3-point roster system will pave the way for filling more than 7,000 teaching jobs. Around 7000 existing vacancies in Central Educational Institutions paved the way for filling up 3 lakh vacancies in the Government (Central and State) Educational institutions.
  • The compliance of the Constitutional Provisions of Articles 14, 16 and 21. The full representation of the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes is to improve the teaching standards in the higher educational institutions by attracting all eligible talented candidates belonging to SCs/STs/SEBCs/EWS.

 

  • The unit for reservation of posts in direct recruitment in teachers cadre will be the ‘University/Educational Institution will address the long-standing demands of persons belonging to SCs/STs/SEBCs and ensure their rights envisaged under the Constitution.

 

Gujarat FM presents the state’s highest budget pegged at over Rs 2 lakh crore

  • Finance Minister of Gujarat Nitin Patel presented the Budget size of Rs 2,04,815 crore for the year 2019-20 for the state. The budget indicates the overall surplus of Rs 572 crore.
  • An additional tax income of Rs 287 crore is added to it. This is the first time the State’s budget crossed Rs.2 lakh crore. The budget estimates around Rs 1,54,732 crore revenue expenditure of Rs 1, 51, 858 crores for the year 2019-20.
  • The tap water to every household by 2022. The state government allotted Rs.4,500 crore for this purpose. The clean energy space, the state plans to increase installed capacity to 30,000 megawatts (Mw) by 2022, from 8885 MW at present.

Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is set to launch the face-recognition facility under Digi Yatra Policy

  • For the first time in India Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is set to launch the face-recognition facility under the Centre’s Digi Yatra Policy. Trials began on July 1 and will continue for a month.
  • The face-recognition technology will remove the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) physically checking passengers’ government issued identification documents at the airport entrance.
  • There will be convenience and Privacy inherent in facial recognition than the prospect of giving up your identity to clear through security faster. This benefit comes at a low cost. Time wastage is less.

BPR&D, Morarji Desai National Institute Yoga signed MOU for Yoga education and training programs

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) and Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) for organizing Yoga education are carried out members across the country.

Volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli has erupted

  • volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli has erupted on 3 July. The Volcanic eruption killed a person. Stromboli is known as the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean” and has a population of around 500.
  • The volcano is one of the most active on the planet and has been under a regular state of eruption since 1932. The last major eruption was in 2002, when a blast destroyed local buildings and piers, injuring six.

Christine Lagarde was nominated to become the next president of the European Central Bank

  • Christine Lagarde, the MD of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), was nominated to become the next president of the European Central Bank by the European Union Council.

 

  • Lagarde will step down two years before the end of her second five-year term at IMF.
  • Lagarde, 63, is a French lawyer, politician and economist.
  • She is the Chairwoman of IMF since 2011.

India ranks 86th in Most Powerful Passport index 2019 Japan and Singapore holds the top spot

  • Around 199 countries in the world based on their Visa-Free Scores showed that Indian passport ranked at 86th position with a mobility score of 58. The report which is released by Henley Passport Index 2019
  • Japan and Singapore secured the joint top spot. It is the most powerful passports in the world. The passport scored a score with 189. South Korea holds second place on the index along with Finland and Germany.
  • It is followed by Denmark, Italy, and Luxembourg. The index includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations including micro-states and territories. India seated 86th position with Mauritian and Sao Tome.

 

  • France dropped to the 4th place with Spain and Sweden. The UK and the US share sixth place with 183 scores. Afghanistan at the 109th place with a score of just 25.

RBI form panel to review supervisory framework for core investment companies

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set up a six-member working group to review the regulatory and supervisory framework for core investment companies (CICs).
  • The panel will be headed by Tapan Ray, Non-Executive Chairman, CBI. The move comes as the corporate group structures becomes more complex and layered. The working group has been asked to submit its report by October 31, 2019.

 

  • Lately, the corporate group structures have become more complex involving multiple layering and leveraging, which has led to greater inter-connectedness with the financial system through their access to public funds.

 

  • The governance framework of CICs needs to be strengthened due to elevated recent developments. In August 2010, RBI introduced a separate framework for the regulation of systemically important CICs after recognising the difference in the business model of a holding company compared to other non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).

Uttar Pradesh govt launches toll-free CM helpline 1076

  • Uttar Pradesh government launched a toll-free Chief Minister Helpline 1076. This scheme will enable people from across the state to register their complaints and a time-bound action will be taken.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will personally review the complaints every month. The people now don’t need to travel to Lucknow to lodge their complaints. The action will be taken against those who make false complaints.
  • The CM helpline number 1076. The helpline will work 24×7 and anyone from any part of the state.The 500-seater call center established for the helpline. The capacity to handle 80,000 inbounds and 55,000 outbound calls on a daily basis.

 

  • The complainant when calls the helpline, he/she will get an SMS. The complaint sent to the department concerned.

 

AGREEMENTS & MOU


Centre signs MoU with IBM to utilize AI in agriculture

  • Government of India has signed a MoU with IBM India to use AI in agriculture. Under the pact, IBM will undertake a pilot study to utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI) and weather technology solutions in agriculture in one district each in three states.
  • The agreement was signed in the presence of Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and junior minister Kailash Choudhary, and other senior officials.
  • Pilot study will be conducted for the Kharif crop season 2019 in three districts namely Bhopal, Rajkot and Nanded, in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, respectively.
  • Once the study is done, the Watson Decision Platform of IBM will give solution in the field of agriculture through AI and weather technology at village level/ farm level.
  • The platform will provide weather forecast and soil moisture information on pro bono basis.
  • This aims to help farmers to take decisions regarding water and crop management for better production and productivity.

NIRDPR has signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to supply sanitary napkins to students

  • National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) has signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a public sector enterprise, on a pilot project to supply sanitary napkins to students.
  • The project has been allocated an amount of Rs.71.82 lakh given by the BDL as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
  • Under the project, sanitary napkins will be provided to 11,516 students free of cost through a team of volunteers and female teachers of 75 schools in Gandipet, Moinabad, Rajendranagar, Serilingampally and Shamshabad mandals of the Telangana State.
  • The project aims to create awareness and hygiene on menstruation and menstrual hygiene among children in government schools in Telangana.
  • The objective includes information dissemination on safe disposal mechanism of sanitary napkins without affecting the environment.

Delhi police signed a MoU with SECI to set up rooftop solar energy systems

  • The Delhi police have signed an agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to set up rooftop solar energy systems in over 200 of its buildings across the city.
  • Under the agreement, the SECI will support the implementation of grid-connected rooftop solar photovoltaic systems on the establishments of Delhi police. The project is expected to be completed soon in a phased manner with active cooperation between the two agencies.
  • This MOU will be optimally used in the buildings and complexes available with Delhi Police all across the city. It has been estimated that Rooftop Solar Systems of total capacity of about 3-4 MW will be implemented across various Delhi Police buildings.
  • The project will utilize vacant roofs of their buildings to harness solar energy and to cater part of their electricity demand through the generated green energy. The project would result in significant reduction on electricity bill payments of the Delhi Police.

CCMB signed a MoU with CDFD to treat of genetic disorders

  • CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) on 3 June. The MoU aims to enable better ways of diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders. 
  • CCMB and CDFD, the premier national institutes, are involved in the cutting edge biological research in the area of genetic disorders. Both the institutes have been offering genetic diagnostic services for the past 20 years.
  • It has been estimated that more than 50 lakh babies are born each year with genetic disease in India. Most of these disorders are presently untreatable and for those which can be treated, the treatment is very expensive.
  • For now, the problem can be addressed by the preventive approach which requires prenatal diagnosis and genetic counselling. The rapid advancements in technology have recently caused tremendous changes in the field of Genetics. 

 

  • The introduction of an affordable and efficient DNA sequencing technology will improve the understanding of human disease, enabling better ways of diagnosis and treatment.

  • Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen is appointed by European Union (EU) leaders as bloc’s next Chief Executive (European Commission president). She will be the first woman in history to hold the position. She will be replacing Jean-Claude Juncker.

AK Misra appointed as an additional director on the Board of Directors (BOD) of Jammu and Kashmir Bank by RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appointed ex-executive director RBI A.K Misra as Additional Director on the Board of Directors (BOD) of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited.
  • The appointment shall be for a period of two years. The appointment will be effect from July 3, 2019 to July 2, 2021. The usual sitting fee and allowances are paid to other directors for attending the meetings of the Board and Committees.

Archery: Indian archers falter at World Cup Stage IV

  • Indians put up a disappointing show in the Archery World Cup Stage IV here Thursday, crashing out in all the team and individual events of the recurve and compound sections.
  • India’s medal hope from the season-ending World Cup will now be from the mixed pair events slated for Friday.
  • Deepika Kumari and Abhishek Verma were the only Indian archers to have made the last-16 rounds of recurve and compound sections but only to go down to their respective opponents.
  • Deepika had succumbed to a 0-6 loss to Chinese Taipei’s Tan Ya-Ting, while Verma went down to Turkey’s Suleyman Araz 148-142.
  • Fresh from bagging Tokyo Olympics quota at the World Championships last month, the recurve men’s team made a first-round exit with a 1-5 lost to Canada.
