World Menstrual Hygiene Day – 28 May
- World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on 28 May. The day is marked to address societal stigma and to create awareness about maintaining menstrual hygiene.
- 28 May was chosen to observe the World Menstrual Hygiene Day because, on average, the menstrual cycle for most women is 28 days and the menstruation period for most women is for five days.

VOC Port Trust partners with NTCPWC for indigenous vessel traffic development
- VO Chidambaranar Port Trust (VOC Port Trust), Tuticorin signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras arm National Technology Centre for Ports Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC) for operation, manning and maintenance of vessel traffic system & development of indigenous Vessel Traffic Software (VTS) at VOC Port Trust.
- VTS is mandatory under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention ‘SOLAS’ (Safety of Life at Sea). The VTS traffic image is compiled and collected by using advanced sensors such as radar, AIS, direction-finding devices, CCTV and VHF.

- The 3rd Foreign Office Consultations between India and New Zealand were held virtually. Riva Ganguly Das, Secretary (East), led the Indian delegation while New Zealand-side was led by Mark Sinclair, Deputy Secretary, Americas and Asia Group, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
- Both sides discussed ways to strengthen coordination in multilateral and regional fora and exchanged views on various regional issues.

- Laurence Des Cars became the first woman chief of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. It is the world’s biggest museum and it was opened 228 years
- She was appointed by the French President Emmanuel Macron as the President-Director of the Musée du Louvre. She replaced Jean-Luc Martinez.
Ashutosh Choudhary was appointed as the Chief Risk Officer of Punjab National Bank
- Punjab National Bank announced the appointment of Ashutosh Choudhury, General Manager (impanelled as Chief General Manager), as Group Chief Risk Officer (GCRO) of Punjab National Bank. He replaced Vishesh Kumar Srivastava.
Joe Biden nominates Indian American Arun Venkataraman as head of US Foreign Commercial Service
- US President Joe Biden has nominated Indian American Arun Venkataraman for the post of Director-General of the United States and Foreign Commercial Service and the Assistant Secretary for Global Markets in the Department of Commerce.
- He is currently the Counselor to the Secretary of Commerce, advising the Department on trade and other international economic matters.

Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen was conferred with Spain’s “Princess of Asturias Award 2021” in social sciences
- Indian economist and Nobel Laureate Amartya Kumar Sen was conferred with Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award 2021 in the social sciences category.
- The award comprises a Joan Miro sculpture representing and symbolising the Award, a diploma, an insignia and a cash prize of 50,000 euros. He won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998.
Three Indian peacekeepers were honoured posthumously with a prestigious UN medal for sacrifice in the line of duty
- Three Indian peacekeepers, namely Corporal Yuvraj Singh, who served with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and two civilian peacekeepers —Ivan Michael Picardo, who served with UNMISS, and Mulchand Yadav, who worked for the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) —were honoured posthumously with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal during a virtual ceremony.
TCS CodeVita wins new Guinness World Records title for world’s largest programming competition
- Tata Consultancy Services programming contest, TCS CodeVita, has won a Guinness World Records title for the world’s largest computer programming competition.
- This year’s champion, Ben Alexander Mirtchouk of Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, is the competition’s first-ever US winner.
Professor CNR Rao bags the Eni International Award 2020 for renewable energy research
- Bharat Ratna awardeeProfessor CNR Rao has received International Eni Award 2020 for research into renewable energy sources and energy storage, also called the Energy Frontier award. This is considered to be the Nobel Prize in Energy Research.
- The Energy Frontiers award was conferred for his work on metal oxides, carbon nanotubes and other materials and two-dimensional systems.

Phil Mickelson wins the 2021 PGA Championship
- The 50-year-old American professional golfer Phil Mickelson created history by winning the 2021 PGA Championship. He became the oldest player to win a major title in the history of the PGA Tour. This is his sixth major title.
- This record was previously held by American Julius Boros when he captured the 1968 PGA Championship at age 48.
Zinedine Zidane resigns as the coach of Real Madrid
- Zinedine Zidane has resigned as the coach of the Spanish club, Real Madrid. He resigned after Real Madrid was beaten to the La Liga title by Atletico Madrid.
- Under his coach, Real Madrid won the three consecutive Champions League trophies in 2016, 2017 and 2018, as well as the club’s first La Liga title in five years in 2017.
