NATIONAL:

  • The 13th edition of the Nepal-India joint military exercise will be held in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.Nepal’s newly-appointed Defence Minister Ishwor Pokharel signed an agreement to launch Surya Kiran Nepal – India Military Joint Exercise.

  • The Andhra Pradesh government has declared new state symbols to replace the ones held by Telangana after it was created.The symbols were notified by the state government’s Department of Environment, Forest, Science and Technology.

  • The Ministry of Culture, Government of India has introduced a new scheme ‘SevaBhojYojna‘.The objective of the scheme is to lessen the financial burden of such Charitable Religious Institutions who provide Food/Prasad/Langar (Community Kitchen)/Bhandara free of cost without any discrimination to Public/Devotees.

  • Shri Rajnath Singh has launched an Online Analytical Tool to facilitate closer monitoring of the flow and utilisation of foreign contributions received by various organisations registered or permitted under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.

  • India has successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Long Range Ballistic Missile Agni-5, which has a strike range of 5,000 km, off the Odisha coast.

  • The Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge), Shri Shripad Yesso Naik will inaugurate the 3rd National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga at Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) in New Delhi.

  • Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has flagged off Humsafar Jodhpur Bandra Express at Bhagat Ki Kothi Railway Station in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur.

  • India has successfully carried out the flight test of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion based missile.The technology demonstrator flight test was conducted from the Launch Centre-III of Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha.

  • MoEFCC and TERI entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a resource efficiency cell in the Ministry. The main objectives of the Cell are to provide a platform to mainstream resource efficiency in public policy.

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched “Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana” for working journalists.

  • The health insurance scheme for working journalists will be implemented with effect from June 1, 2018.  This scheme provides Rs. 2 Lakh per annum health insurance cover to all working journalists of the state.

  • The Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt Maneka Sanjay Gandhi laid foundation of Sakhi Suraksha Advanced DNA Forensic Laboratory in the campus of Central Forensic Science Lab, Chandigarh.

  • The Maharashtra Government has announced the opening up of a ‘sandbox’ to boost startups in Mumbai.It aimed at creating the entire ecosystem which will help the fintech industry flourish, starting with four accelerators.

  • The Chandrabhaga beach on the Konark coast of Odisha will be the first in Asia to get the Blue Flag certification. It is the tag given to environment-friendly and clean beaches, equipped with amenities of international standards for tourists.

  • The Ministry of Agriculture and farmers’ welfare in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by 2022 has launched the Krishi kalyan Abhiyaan from 1st June, 2018.

  • The Government launches ‘JANAUSHADHI SUVIDHA’Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkin – under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).The Affordable sanitary napkins at Rs. 2.50 per pad now available at over 3600 Janaushadhi Kendras functional in 33 States/UTs across India. This

  • India and its two strategic partners, the US and Japan will hold the Malabar naval exercise in the coast of Guam in the Philippine Sea.It aims to deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region where China has been expanding its military footprint.

  • According to  ASSOCHAM-NEC, India is among the top five countries in generating e-waste. The other countries topping the chart of e-waste generation are China, USA, Japan and Germany.

  • In India, Maharashtra contributes the largest e-waste of 19.8 per cent.

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat announced that there would be a complete ban on use of polythene throughout the state from July 31. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is beat plastic pollution.

  • The Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Prasar Bharati, which runs Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR), have inked an MoU required for the release of financial allocation to the broadcaster.

  • The 11th of GeoIntelligence Asia 2018 took place at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. The theme of Seminar was ‘GeoSpatial : A Force Multiplier for Defence and Industrial Security’.

  • The Union Cabinet has apprised the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Denmark on technical cooperation in the field of sustainable and smart urban development in April this year.


    INTERNATIONAL:

 

  • PM Modi launched three digital payment schemes, including the international debut of Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) and RuPay in Singapore as well as the State Bank of India’s online international Rupee remittance app.
  • The International Conference on TRIPS- CBD Linkage will be held in Geneva on June 7-8, 2018.It is to revive WTO discussions on issues related to theft of traditional knowledge

  • China has successfully launched a new Earth observation satellite which will be mainly used in agricultural resources research and disaster monitoring, official media reported.

  • India will import its first ever cargo of LNG from Russia under a long-term deal as the world’s fourth-largest buyer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) diversifies its import basket to meet its vast energy needs.

  • According to Henley Passport Index, Japan has the “most powerful” passport in the world. India is in 76th Position.The second rank is shared by Singapore and China, with 188 destinations accessible without a prior visa.

  • South Africa commemorates the 125th year of Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha. The incident led him to develop his Satyagraha principles of peaceful resistance.


BANKING AND ECONOMY:

  • India’s second largest IT services firm Infosys has completed the acquisition of US-based WONGDOODY. Infosys will acquire WongDoody Holding Company, a US-based digital creative and consumer insights agency, for a total consideration of up to $75 million.
  • India has signed a USD 500 million (Rs 3,371 crore) loan pact with World Bank to provide additional financing for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) rural road projects. The loan has a 3-year grace period, and a maturity of 10 years.

  • The Indian government has handed over a cheque amounting Rs 33 crore to the Nepal Government for construction of a Postal Highway.The amount was handed over by Indian Mission to Nepal’s Deputy Chief of Mission Dr Ajay Kumar.

  • Facebook has entered into a partnership with National Commission for Women (NCW) to launch a digital literacy programme aimed at training 60,000 women in universities across India on safe use of the Internet, social media and email in a year.

  • HDFC Bank’s managing director Aditya Puri has figured in the top 30 global CEOs list published by the American financial magazine Barron’s.

  • Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong signed 8 agreements

  • India has been placed at 113th position in the list of 175 countries in End of Childhood Index 2018” indexed by global child rights group, Save the Children.Singapore and Slovenia are placed at the top sharing the first place in the index and Niger figures at the end of the list at 175.

  • The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India has increased the policy rates:

         Repo : 6.25

         Reverse Repo : 6.0

         Marginal standing facility (MSF) : 6.50

  • Microsoft has agreed to acquire GitHub, a code sharing platform for software developers, in a $7.5bn deal.

  • The World Bank has approved Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY), a Rs.6000 crore Central Sector Scheme of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.The scheme aims to improve ground water management in priority areas in the country through community participation.

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to allow urban co-operative banks (UCB) to convert into small finance banks (SFB). It is a move aimed at bringing these entities into mainstream banking.

  • IDFC Bank has received the RBI’s approval for merger of Capital First, Capital First Home Finance and Capital First Securities with the company.

  • Foreign Direct Investment to India decreased to 40 billion dollars last year from 44 billion dollars in 2016 while outflows from India, the main source of investment in South Asia, more than doubled, according to a new trade report by the UN.


APPOINTMENTS:

  • Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, who was the Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) when India carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed Northern Army.

  • Shri Amit Khare, IAS (Jharkhand: 1985) has been assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on superannuation of Shri Narendra Kumar Sinha, IAS.

  • Assam’s Priyanka Das, working on satellite navigation for French major Safran, has been appointed ambassador for an initiative in France to encourage girls to follow scientific careers and take it to higher education levels.

  • Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn for a second four-year term in office as the country faces major economic and security challenges.

  • IDBI Bank managing director M K Jain will be the fourth deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, filling the vacancy after S S Mundra retired on July 31 last year. His term is three years.

  • The Jordanian Prime Minister Hani Mulki has submitted his resignation to King Abdullah II.According to official sources, Omar al-Razza, the current education minister and a former World Bank economist will replace Mulki.

  • The Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra has been given additional charge as Chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. He will take over from current chief Dr. S. Christopher.

  • Veteran producer Pippa Harris has been appointed as the new chairman of British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

  • Malaysia’s king Sultan Muhammad V has approved the appointment of an ethnic Indian lawyer as the new attorney general.

  • The Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa has been elected as the president of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.

  • A 1994-batch Indian Foreign Officer (IFS) Rudrendra Tandon has been appointed as the next Ambassador to ASEAN. Currently, he is serving as the Joint Secretary at Headquarters, Jakarta.

  • Bandhan Bank has appointed Harun Rasid Khan, a former RBI deputy governor as non-executive chairman. Khan retired as the deputy governor of RBI in July 2016.

  • Shri Tsewang Namgyal has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Lithuania.

  • A 2004-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Madhu Sethi has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Cuba.

  • Kendrick Lamar Receives the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music.The Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger presented Kendrick Lamar with his 2018 Pulitzer Prize.
  • Singer Zubeen Garg will be honoured with the Hero to Animals Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India for his recent appeal to end animal sacrifice at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the Padma Shri award, one of India’s highest civilian awards, to former Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh.

  • Dhiraj Ram Krishna has received the ‘National Gopal Ratna’ award from Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Radha Mohan Singh in New Delhi for ‘upkeep of the best dairy animals of indigenous breeds’.

  • The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance will be awarded the Sansad Ratna Award 2018 for its outstanding performance.

  • Pakistani-British writer Kamila Shamsie has won the international Women’s Prize for Fiction with “Home Fire,” a novel about love, radicalism and conflicting loyalties in the post-9/11 era.

  • The IT and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has released Bhagat Singh’s jail diary book at a function in New Delhi. The jail diary book is a compilation of Bhagat Singh’s writings.


SPORTS :

  • The Indian star cricketer has been honored with the ‘Most Inspiring Icon Of The Year For Social Welfare’ award.The award was given by the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival (DPIFF).

  • The two-time Commonwealth Games champion Sanjita Chanu tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid and was provisionally suspended by the international federation.She won a gold in the women’s 53kg category in the recent Gold Coast CWG 2018.

  • Kagiso Rabada, the World’s No. 1 Test bowler, was named South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year.

  • The world No.1 Rafael Nadal of Spain has defeated Maximilian Marterer of Germany earning his career’s 900th win and advancing to the French Open quarter-finals.

  • India cricket captain Virat Kohli is among the world’s highest-paid athletes, according to a Forbes’ compilation topped by American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather.


OBITUARY

  • Timothy Pereira, former football international who represented Tata FC, died here last night after a prolonged illness. Pereira was 75.

  • Leela Menon, a pioneering journalist and the chief editor of Malayalam newspaper ‘Janmabhumi’ has passed away.
