Asian Development Bank provides $1.5-billion fiscal support to India for pandemic response

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) had provided financial support of $1.5 billion to India in support of India’s pandemic response.
  • This fiscal support of $1.5 billion to India formed part of the $16.1 billion that ADB had specifically set aside for pandemic response in 2020.
  • ADB committed a record USD 31.6 billion in 2020 to help Asia and the Pacific tackle the COVID-19 outbreak and support a green, sustainable recovery from the pandemic and address long-term development challenges.

RBI imposes Rs 40 lakh penalty on Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of 40 lakhs on Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank, Shimla, for non-compliance with certain regulatory directions issued by NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development).
  • The penalty has been imposed for non-compliance with regulatory directions issued by NABARD contained in ‘Review of Frauds – Guidelines on Monitoring and Reporting System’.

  • IIT Guwahati and the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research projects aiming at improving maintenance and operations of train running in the region and other fields.
  • The collaboration will also ensure improving maintenance and operations of rolling stock, yards, train operations and green technologies.

DRDO develops critical crystal blade technology for aero engines

Public Enterprises Selection Board selects Amit Banerjee for the post of CMD of BEML Limited

  • Amit Banerjee was selected as the next Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of BEML Limited, a Miniratna Defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), the organisation responsible for making top-level appointments in PSUs, had picked Banerjee for the post of CMD of BEML Limited.
  • Amit Banerjee, who is currently serving as Director (Rail & Metro Business) of BEML Limited, had been selected for the post of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of the company.

  • Justice Rajesh Bindal was appointed the acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. He will succeed Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan.
  • Justice Bindal obtained is degree in Law from Kurukshetra University in 1985 and joined the profession at the Punjab & Haryana High Court in September.

Justice Vimla Singh Kapoor appointed to be Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court

  • Justice Vimla Singh Kapoor was appointed as the Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court. She joined the Judicial Service as Civil Judge Class II. Prior to this, she appointed as an Additional Judge of Chhattisgarh High Court for a period of 2 years.

Krithi Karanth becomes the first Indian woman to be chosen as a ”Wild Innovator”

  • Chief Conservation Scientist of Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS), Krithi K Karanth has been chosen as the first Indian and Asian woman for the 2021 ”WILD Innovator Award”.
  • This award given by the ”WILD ELEMENTS Foundation” brings together a coalition of innovators, advocates and partners to disrupt the status quo and identify solutions to global sustainability and conservation.

Saudi women’s rights activist Loujain Alhathloul awarded 8th Václav Havel Human Rights Prize

  • Saudi women’s rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul was awarded a top European rights prize “Václav Havel Human Rights Prize” in recognition of her fight for women’s rights in the kingdom, including her efforts to end a ban on women driving.
  • The Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize was named after Vaclav Havel, the former Czech dissident and later President is awarded annually for civil society action in defence of human rights by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

India ranks 3rd in world military spending in 2020 by SIPRI

  • Total global military expenditure rose to $1981 billion last year, an increase of 2.6 percent in real terms from 2019, according to new data published today by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
  • The five biggest spenders in 2020, which together accounted for 62 percent of global military expenditure, were the United States, China, India, Russia and the United Kingdom.
  • At $72.9 billion, India’s military spending in 2020 was 1 percent higher than in 2019 and 34 percent higher than in 2011.

Padma Shri award winner Dadudan Gadhavi passed away at 80

  • Renowned Gujarati poet and folk singer Dadudan Pratapdan Gadhvi has passed away at the age of 80. He was honoured with Padma Shri Award (fourth highest civilian award) in 2021 for his rich contribution to the field of art and literature.

Australian Olympic gold medallist John Konrads has passed away at 78

  • Australian swimmer and Olympic gold medalist John Konrads passed away at the age of 78. He won gold for Australia in the 1500m at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He sets 26 individual freestyle world records.

Noted Hindi litterateur Manzoor Ahthesham passed away at 73

  • Noted Hindi litterateur and Padma Shri awardee Manzoor Ahthesham passed away in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He was honoured with Padma Shri Award (fourth highest civilian award) in 2003.

Noted Odia and English writer Manoj Das passed away at 87

  • Legendary writer Manoj Das passed away at Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry. The 87-year-old was a novelist, revered poet, columnist, fiction and travel writer, a bold commentator on social issues, and an amazing storyteller. Born in 1934 in Odisha, he went on to make an indelible mark in the realm of both Odia and English literature.
