World Sickle Cell Awareness Day – 19 June

  • World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is observed annually on 19 June. This day is observed to raise awareness for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and possible treatments and funding for research for the disease.
  • Sickle Cell Disease has a significant impact on our hemoglobin levels, resulting in low oxygen levels in our bodies. This day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2008.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee relaunches ‘Krishak Bandhu’ scheme

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has relaunched the state government’s Krishak Bandhu scheme, doubling the assistance to farmer-beneficiaries from 5000 to Rs. 10,000 per acre per year.
  • Farm labours, sharecroppers and marginal farmers will also get double benefits starting from 4,000 per month instead of Rs. 2,000 per month.

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually participated in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus).
  • The ADMM-Plus is a platform comprising 10-nation ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and its eight dialogue partners (India, China, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States) to strengthen security and defence cooperation for peace, stability and development in the ASEAN region.

India and three EU nations begin two-day naval drill ‘EUNAVFOR’ in the Gulf of Aden

  • India and three European nations (Spain, France and Italy) began a two-day high-voltage naval wargame ‘EUNAVFOR’ held in the Gulf of Aden with a larger aim of improving operational interoperability and promote, peace, security and stability in the key waterways.
  • Five warships from the four navies are participating in the ‘EUNAVFOR’ joint naval exercise featuring advanced air defence and anti-submarine drills, cross deck helicopter operations, tactical manoeuvres and search and rescue missions.
  • European Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) is the EU’s counter-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia.

India and Bhutan signed an MoU for developing cooperation in the areas of environment

  • India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan for cooperation in the area of climate change and waste management,
  • The MoU will also strengthen technological, scientific and management capabilities and expand the areas of cooperation in the field of environment to promote a mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries.
  • The MoU was signed virtually by the Indian Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar and Bhutan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairperson of Bhutan’s National Environment Commission Lyonpo Tandi Dorji.

RBI grants ‘in-principle’ nod to Centrum Financial Services Limited to set up a Small Finance Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given “in-principle” approval to Centrum Financial Services Limited (CFSL) to set up a small finance bank (SFB), which will take over the beleaguered Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC Bank).
  • The approval is under the general guidelines for ‘on tap’ licensing of small finance banks (SFB) in the private sector issued on 5 December 2019.

India ranks 2nd in the share of Central Bank surplus transfers: Turkey tops the list

  • India’s central bank and regulatory body under the jurisdiction of the Union Ministry of Finance, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), was second in terms of reserves transferred (Rs. 99,122 crores) to India as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) for the fiscal year 2020–21.
  • The index was topped by Turkey (Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey). The RBI was ranked fourth by the ratio of surplus as a percentage of GDP in FY20.

Asian Games gold medallist and Padma Shri awardee Milkha Singh passed away at 91

  • Four-time Asian Games gold medallist Milkha Singh passed away at the age of 91. He had also won four Asian Games gold medals, including the 200 m and 400 m wins in the 1956 Asian Games and 400 m and 4X400 m relay in the 1962 Asian Games.
  • Milkha Singh was awarded the Padma Shri (India’s fourth-highest civilian award) in 1959. He was known as the “Flying Sikh”. 

First President of Zambia Kenneth Kaunda passed away at 97

  • Zambia’s first President and champion of African independence Kenneth David Kaunda passed away at the age of 97. He served as the first president of Zambia from 1964 to 1991.
