World Meteorological Day – 23 March

  • World Meteorological Day is observed annually on 23 March to raise global awareness about the various issues that the planet faces and serves as a reminder of how the earth’s atmosphere and human behaviour are intertwined.
  • The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) came into existence on 23 March 1950. The headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • WMO is a United Nations (UN) specialised organisation with 193 member states and territories.
  • The theme for World Meteorological Day 2022 is ‘Early warning and early action’.

 

Shaheed Diwas – 23 March

  • Shaheed Diwas is also known as Martyr’s Day is celebrated every year on 23 March to remember these great revolutionaries who sacrificed themselves for the freedom of India.
  • This day is remembered as, the British government hanged three freedom fighters of India — Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar on 23 March 1931.

India’s first green hydrogen Microgrid project is to come up at the NTPC-Simhadri plant in Visakhapatnam

  • India’s first green Hydrogen-based energy storage project has planned to come up at the NTPC Simhadri plant in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • This plant will develop a standalone fuel cell-based 50 kW microgrid pilot project with green hydrogen production using electrolyser.
  • National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has awarded the Standalone Fuel-Cell based micro-grid pilot project with hydrogen production using eletrolyser to Bloom Energy India Private Limited-Bengaluru at NTPC Simhadri.

Indian Army engineers build a first-of-its-kind 3D printed house for jawans in Gandhinagar, Gujarat

  • Indian Army’s Military Engineering Services (MES) constructed two 3D printed houses within three weeks using 3D Rapid Construction Technology in South-Western Air Command in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • This 3D-printed house is the first-of-its-kind structure in India. It was constructed in collaboration with the Chennai-based startup Tvasta.

Kerala becomes the first state in India to introduce carbon-neutral farming

  • Kerala became the first State in India to introduce carbon-neutral farming methods in Kerala. Kerala Government has allocated ₹ 6 crores in the 2022–23 State Budget of Kerala.
  • In the first phase, carbon-neutral farming will be implemented in 13 farms under the agriculture department and tribal areas.
  • In the second phase, model carbon-neutral farms will be developed in all the 140 Assembly constituencies.

NABARD sanctions the highest allocation of ₹ 4,013 crores to Odisha for various development projects

  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned ₹ 4,013 crores to the Odisha Government various development projects in Odisha during the financial year 2021–22 under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).
  • This financial allocation is highest in India under RIDF during the financial year.

OECD retains India’s FY24 GDP growth at 5.5 per cent

Devendra Jhajharia becomes the first para-athlete to receive Padma Bhushan

  • Devendra Jhajharia became the first para-athlete to receive the Padma Bhushan (India’s third-highest civilian award). The forty-year-old javelin thrower received the prestigious award from President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • He won his first gold Olympic medal during the 2004 Athens Paralympics and his second Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio Games. At the Tokyo Olympics, he won a silver medal.
  • Para-shooter Avani Lekhara was also awarded the Padma Shri award (India’s fourth-highest civilian award) in the Sports category. Avani Lekhara is the first Indian woman to win two Paralympic medals in the same Games, as well as the first Indian woman to earn Paralympic gold.

India ranks fifty-one in the global house price index Q4 2021: Knight Frank report

  • According to property consultant Knight Frank’s report titled ‘Global House Price Index – Q4 2021, India ranked fifty-one in annual appreciation in housing prices with a 1 per cent rise in rates during the October–December quarter of 2021.
  • India has climbed up five spots to the fifty-one ranks in Q4 of 2021 against the fifty-sixth rank in Q4 of 2020.
  • This index was topped by Turkey (59.6 per cent), New Zealand (22.6 per cent), Czech Republic (22.1 per cent), Slovakia (22.1 per cent) and Australia (21.8 per cent).

Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty announces her retirement from tennis

  • World number one tennis player Ashleigh Barty of Australia announced her retirement from tennis at the age of 25.
  • She has been world number one for more than two years and retires after winning three Grand Slam singles titles — the French Open in 2019, Wimbledon in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2022.
