  • International Day of Living Together in Peace is celebrated globally on 16 May since December 2017. The day aims to uphold the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony.

  • National Dengue Day is observed on 16 May every year. This day aims at spreading awareness about dengue, informing people about the disease, and encouraging them to take the necessary precautions to prevent it. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare decided 16 May to be observed as the National Dengue Day in India.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day – 17 May

  • World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is observed on 17 May every year. The day is celebrated to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the internet can have to bridge the gap in society. The day was proclaimed in November 2006 by the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey.

  • Go Airlines has rebranded itself as ‘Go First’ and has filed preliminary papers for an initial share sale worth 3,600 crores.

NABARD provides Rs. 1,236 crores from its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for Assam in FY21

  • National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has provided Rs. 1,236 crores from its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) through the monetary 12 months 2020-21 with Rural Connectivity Projects (Roads & Bridges) as the main target space in the state of Assam.
  • NABARD has additionally sanctioned 1150 crores to the Government of Assam throughout 2020–21 underneath RIDF XXVI for the creation of the latest infrastructure initiatives.

Google partners with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to provide Starlink internet service

  • Google has partnered with SpaceX to provide cloud services to help deliver the internet through the latter’s Starlink satellites. Under the deal, Elon Musk’s space development company will install Starlink ground stations at Google data centres that connect to Starlink satellites to enable high-speed broadband internet via Google Cloud.
  • The service is expected to be available to enterprise customers in the second half of 2021.

International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (ICAS) appoints Manisha Kapoor as its Vice-President

  • Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) announced that its General Secretary Manisha Kapoor has now been appointed to the executive committee of the International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (ICAS).
  • She will be one of the four vice-presidents to serve on the executive committee of the global body. ICAS is a global platform of self-regulatory organisations that was set up by the European Advertising Standards Alliance in 2008.

India-born Rajesh Agrawal was re-appointed London’s Deputy Mayor for Business

  • India-born entrepreneur Rajesh Agrawal was re-appointed as London’s Deputy Mayor for Business by Mayor Sadiq Khan after he won a second term in local elections last week.
  • Rajesh Agrawal is also the co-chair of the Labour Friends of India (LFIN) diaspora representative group of the Opposition Labour Party.

Indian-American Neera Tanden was appointed as the senior adviser of the White House

  • Indian-American Neera Tanden was appointed as the senior adviser to US President Joe Biden, two months after she withdrew her nomination as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget due to stiff opposition from Republican senators.

  • American professional basketball player Kobe Bryant was inducted posthumously into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 2020. He was the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2008. He was in the United States team that won Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal receives ‘International Invincible Gold Medal’

  • Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has been conferred with the International Invincible Gold Medal of this year (2021) for his extraordinary commitment and outstanding service to humanity through his writings, social and illustrious public life.
  • The decision was held under the leadership of Tony Nader (Global head of the Maharshi organisation).

India has 43 of 100 cities at maximum environmental risk; Verisk Maplecroft report

  • According to a report by research firm Verisk Maplecroft, India has 43 cities out of the world’s 100 most environmental risks cities. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia topped the list followed by Delhi and Chennai.
  • Other Indian cities are Agra (6th), Kanpur (10th), Jaipur (22nd) and Lucknow (24th). Lima, Peru is the only non-Asian city to crack the top 100. Glasgow, Scotland was ranked as the safest city in the report.

  • Financial Express managing editor Sunil Jain passed away at the age of 58. He started his journalistic career as a reporter in India Today in He is a graduate of the Delhi School of Economics.

Former Saurashtra cricketer and BCCI referee Rajendrasinh Jadeja passed away at 66

  • Rajendrasinh Jadeja, one of the most remarkable cricketers of Saurashtra, passed away at the age of 66. He was a right-arm medium pacer and a remarkable all-rounder. He played between 1974–75 to 1986–87. He also served as a match referee in 53 first-class, 18 List A and 34 T20 matches.

Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Satav passed away at 46

  • Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Satav passed away at the age of 46. He has served as a Lok Sabha MP from 2014 to 2019 from the Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra and has been a legislator in the Maharashtra Assembly.

India’s Tejaswini Shankar wins consecutive high jump titles in the USA

  • Representing Kansas State University, India’s Tejaswini Shankar won back-to-back men’s high jump titles in the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Manhattan, USA.
  • He had also won the men’s high jump title in the 2019 edition of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He is the third Indian to compete in the highly competitive USA circuit.
