  • Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma appointed ‘Guardian Ministers’ for balanced, speedy and sustainable developments of districts in Assam. The Assam Government has appointed 13 ‘Guardian Ministers’ for 34 districts in Assam.
  • The assigned ministers will also prepare a plan for infrastructure development in their respective districts and identify resources for employment generation.

India’s first city-wide environmental surveillance platform for COVID-19 launched in Bangalore

  • The Government of Karnataka, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Skoll Foundation-supported COVIDactionCollab (CAC), had launched the ‘Precision Health Platform’ in Bangalore, Karnataka.
  • The platform tracks COVID through waste-water surveillance with the number of cases of COVID-19 surging across the county in the second wave of the pandemic.

  • Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh had launched the ‘Manipur Home Isolation Management (MHIM)’ mobile application for home isolated COVID-19 patients.

Bangladesh agrees $200 million currency swap facility with Sri Lanka

  • Bangladesh has approved a $200 billion currency swap facility to Sri Lanka. This is the first time Bangladesh is giving loans to another country from the reserves by swapping currency.
  • Sri Lanka will repay over three months with 2% interest on the Libor rate. Sri Lanka’s foreign currency reserves stand around $4 billion.

RBI imposes a monetary penalty of Rs. 10 crores on HDFC Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of 10 crores on private sector lender HDFC Bank for violating regulatory compliance in the auto loan portfolios.
  • The penalty was imposed for contravention of provisions of Section 6(2) and Section 8 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

NEERI develops ‘saline gargle’ method for COVID-19 tests results within three hours

  • Scientists of the Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) have developed a ‘saline gargle RT-PCR method’ for testing COVID-19 samples that can provide results within three hours.
  • The saline gargle method is simple, fast, cost-effective, patient-friendly and comfortable. It offers instant results and is well-suited for rural and tribal areas, given the minimal infrastructure requirements.

DRDO develops near-isothermal forging technology for aero-engines

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed the near isothermal forging technology used in manufacturing parts for aero-engines. This technology is used to produce all the five stages of high press compressor (HPC) discs out of titanium alloy using an isothermal forge press weighing 2,000 tonnes.

  • Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) Chief Samant Kumar Goel and Intelligence Bureau (IB) head Arvind Kumar were given a one-year extension.
  • Samant Kumar Goel is a 1984-batch IPS officer from Punjab cadre, would continue to be the Secretary of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for one year until 30 June 2022.
  • Arvind Kumar is an IPS officer of Assam and Meghalaya cadre, will continue to head the Intelligence Bureau for one year until 30 June 2022.

  • Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt had received a golden visa for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE Government had in 2019 implemented a new system for long-term residence visas, enabling foreigners to live, work and study in the UAE without the need of a national sponsor.
  • These golden visas are issued for five or ten years and will be renewed automatically.

  • Renowned author and art curator Alka Raghuvanshi passed away at the age of 60. She was India’s first trained art curator who had trained at the Goldsmiths College, London and the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford.

Freedom fighter TM Kaliannan Gounder passed away at 101

  • Freedom fighter TM Kalliannan Gounder passed away at the age of 101. He was elected to the Indian Constituent Assembly while he was 28-years-old and the youngest member in the Constituent Assembly then and also a member of India’s first Provisional Parliament.
  • He served as a Member of the Legislative Council in Tamil Nadu and also as an MLA thrice between 1952 and 1967.
