  • World Hand Hygiene Day is observed annually on 5 May to create awareness about the importance of hand hygiene towards health care. The day was organised by WHO (World Health Organisation). The WHO slogan of 2021 is “Seconds save lives – clean your hands!”

International No Diet Day – 6 May

  • International No Diet Day (INDD) is celebrated on 6 May every year. The day is dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle with a focus on the health of any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success.
  • The first International No Diet Day was celebrated in the UK in 1992.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan flags off 1st supply of UCO based Biodiesel blended Diesel

  • Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan virtually flagged off the first supply of UCO (Used Cooking Oil) based Biodiesel blended Diesel under the EOI (Expression of Interest) Scheme from Indian Oil’s Tikrikalan Terminal.
  • Centre had initiated Expressions of Interest for “Procurement of Bio-diesel produced from Used Cooking Oil” on the occasion of World Biofuel Day on 10 August 2019.
  • India has set an indicative target of 20% blending of ethanol with gasoline and 5% blending of biodiesel with diesel by 2030.

  • Union Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar participated in the G-7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting through video conference.
  • The Group of Seven (G7) is an intergovernmental organisation consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

S&P revises India’s GDP growth forecast to 9.8% for FY22

  • S&P Global Ratings revised India’s GDP growth forecast for the current financial year (2021-2022) to 9.8 per cent from 11 per cent.
  • S&P Global Ratings is an American credit rating agency and a division of S&P Global that publishes financial research and analysis on stocks, bonds and commodities.

SpaceX launches 60 more Starlink satellites into orbit

  • SpaceX launched another Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The next set of 60 Starlink satellites for the company’s internet satellite constellation system went up on a rocket using a first stage booster flown eight times before.
  • Starlink is a satellite internet constellation being constructed by SpaceX providing satellite Internet access. The constellation will consist of thousands of mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), working in combination with ground transceivers.

  • ‘Jungle Cry’ won the ‘Best Film’ (Jury) award at the 11th Dada Saheb Phalke International Film Festival 2021. The film was directed by Sagar Ballary. ‘Jungle Cry’ is based on the inspiring true story of 12 students from Kalinga Institute (KISS).

Justice Gita Mittal Conferred Arline Pacht Global Vision Award by the International Association of Women Judges

  • Former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice Gita Mittal has been conferred with the prestigious Arline Pacht Global Vision Award for 2021 along with Margarita Luna Ramos from Mexico by the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).
  • She was the first woman to serve as the Chief Justice of the J&K High Court. She is the first Indian judge to receive the award.

  • Former Union Minister Ajit Singh passed away at the age of 82. He was a seven-time Member of Parliament (MP) from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He also served as Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Agriculture, and Food Processing Industries.
  • He was first elected as a Rajya Sabha MP in He is the son of Charan Singh, former Prime Minister of India.

Oscar-winning ‘Moonstruck’ actress Olympia Dukakis passed away at 89

  • Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis passed away at the age of 89. She won an Oscar for her performance as a sardonic, middle-aged mother, who advises her headstrong daughter on matters of love in the 1987 romantic film comedy “Moonstruck”.

Award-winning writer Bhaskar Maiya passed away at 70

  • Renowned writer and Kendra Sahitya Akademi awardee Bhaskar Maiya passed away in Udupi. He was awarded the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for his book “Ajanabeepan Ek Saiddanthik Anushilan”.

India’s longest-serving Bishop Philipose Mar Chrysostom passed away at 103

  • Former head of Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the longest-serving bishop in India, Philipose Mar Chrysostom passed away in Kumbanad, Kerala. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2018.

Former Sri Lanka bowler Nuwan Zoysa banned for six years under ICC Anti-Corruption Code

  • Former Sri Lanka pacer and coach of the A-team Nuwan Zoysa banned from all cricket for six years after an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
  • He has also been charged by the ICC on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) with breaching three counts of the ECB Anti-Corruption Code for Participants for the T10 League.
