NATIONAL
India and Australia ink five pacts
India and Australia signed five agreements to boost investments and enhance cooperation in key sectors like disability, agricultural research and education as President Ram Nath Kovind met Australian Prime minister Scott Morrison in Sydney.
The first agreement was for cooperation in the area of disability and to deliver services to the differently-abled. The second one was between Invest India and Austrade to facilitate bilateral investment.
The third agreement was signed between the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute, Ranchi, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organisation, Canberra, to foster scientific collaboration and innovation.
The fourth one between the Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University, Guntur, and the University of Western Australia, Perth, for cooperation in agricultural research and education while the last one was between the Indraprashta Institute of Information Technology, New Delhi, and the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane for a joint Ph.D agreement.
European Investment Bank and SBI to step up financing of wind energy projects across India
The European Investment Bank (EIB) will increase its support for India’s wind energy projects by expanding the existing lending programmes with SBI.
EIB and SBI have agreed to cooperate on financing renewable energy and providing new support for wind energy projects across India by expanding the ongoing financing initiative in the field of onshore wind projects.
EIB has also approved a new line of credit to Yes Bank to boost private investment in clean energy projects.
EIB will provide USD 100 million line of credit to the private sector lender in the coming months.

Tanzania’s Joyce Msuya Appointed Acting Executive Director of UNEP
Tanzania’s Joyce Msuya has been appointed to head the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), following the resignation of its executive director, Erik Solheim.
Msuya was appointed to the global organisation as the deputy executive director, at the level of assistant secretary-general of the United Nations, in August this year.
Note: Solheim resigned his position at UNEP, following an internal audit report that said he had had gobbled up $500,000 in unnecessary and budgeted travel expenses in just 22 months.
UberEats signs Alia Bhatt as brand ambassador in India
Uber Eats, the food delivery platform, has roped in actress Alia Bhatt as its brand ambassador in India.
For Uber Eats, India will be the first country to have a brand ambassador. Uber Eats is currently present across 37 cities in India.
In the past year and a half, Uber Eats has emerged as one of the fastest growing food delivery apps in the country.
UNICEF appoints Nahid Afrin as ‘Youth Advocate’ for NE
Popular singer Nahid Afrin of Assam has been appointed as the first ‘Youth Advocate’ of the northeastern region by the UNICEF to fight for child rights. The UNICEF engages ‘Youth Advocates’ to harness their voice as agents of change in society.
Nahid made her playback debut in the 2016 Bollywood film ‘Akira’ starring Sonakshi Sinha in the lead. She received the best female playback singer award at the Assam state Film Award 2018.

Prof SP Ganguly Awarded Mexican Order of Aztec Eagle
In a first for an Indian academic, Professor S.P. Ganguly, a well-known Hispanist who headed the Centre for Spanish and Latin American Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University here, has been awarded the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest civilian honour given to a foreigner by Mexico.
Ganguly was decorated with the striking gold-yellow insignia by Mexican Ambassador Melba Pria at a ceremony in the India International Centre (IIC).
He has authored, edited and translated over 25 books in an academic career spanning 40 years.
Azim Premji Conferred Forbes India Leadership Awards 2018
The Forbes India Leadership Awards, India’s most prestigious honour for the top executives, was held on November 22 in Mumbai. Entrepreneurs and company bosses were awarded across nine different categories.
Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro, was awarded the Forbes India Leadership Awards 2018 Lifetime Achievement.

Mary Kom Wins Sixth World Championship Title, Creates History
MC Mary Kom has created history by becoming the first woman to win six boxing world titles after clinching the 48 kg gold at the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.
The 35-year-old Indian legend defeated Ukrainian Hanna Okhota in the summit clash.
Now, Mary overtakes Ireland’s Katie Taylor as the first female boxer to win six gold medals, and becomes only the second pugilist ever (male or female) to achieve the feat after Felix Savon.
Former Chelsea Striker Didier Drogba Announces Retirement
Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba announced his retirement.
Drogba, 40, began his career at French side Le Mans in 1998, but did not play top-tier football until he was 23 when he was signed by Guingamp in 2002.
He went on to win three Premier League titles in his first eight years at Chelsea as well as four FA Cups and two League Cups.

Former Indian Hockey Player Sandeep Michael Passes Away
Former Indian hockey player Sandeep Michael, who captained the Indian junior team to an Asia Cup gold in 2003 has passed away.
The high point of Michael’s India career was the 2003 junior Asia Cup in which he was adjudged the most promising player.
He was also part of the Indian development teams that won gold and bronze medals respectively in the Akbar-el-Yom Cup competition in 2002 and 2003.
