India And ADB Sign $240 Million Loan For Safe Drinking Water Service For West Bengal
Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed $240 million loan for providing safe and sustainable drinking water to about 1.65 million people in three districts of the state of West Bengal affected by arsenic, fluoride, and salinity.
The project is supported by a grant of $3 million from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, financed by the Government of Japan, and a $2 million grant from ADB’s Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund.
Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Ministry of Finance, signed for the Government of India; and Mr. Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, signed for ADB.
Odisha Government launches food security scheme
The Naveen Patnaik government launched its own food security scheme benefiting 25 lakh people who were left out of the National Food Security Act.
The beneficiaries will get 5 kg of rice per person per month at the rate of ₹1 per kg.
The State government will spend ₹443.5 crore per annum to support the scheme and ₹221.75 crore in the current financial year.

Manipur: 23rd open defecation free state
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has declared Manipur as the 23rd state to become Open Defecation Free (ODF) in India.
It is the 5th state in the North East to get the ODF tag. Dr Najma Heptulla, the Governor of Manipur handed over the certificate of ODF Manipur to Singh during the observance of National Cleanliness Day at Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal.
At the event, the chief minister also announced the launch of Google Toilet locator, which enable people to locate the nearest public toilet for use when needed from their mobile in the State.

World’s largest Pillar-Less dome inaugurated in Pune
India’s Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated the world’s largest dome and Peace Center at the Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Vishwarajbaug, in Pune, India.
The world’s largest dome is with a diameter of 160 feet, standing taller than the Vatican Dome, which has a diameter of 139.6 feet. The height of the dome at its apex is 263 feet.
The imposing monumental dome, clad in the finest marble, is the vision of Dr. Vishwanath Karad, founder-president and director general of the World Peace Center.

India launches relief operation for tsunami-hit Indonesia
India has launched ‘Operation Samudra Maitri’ to assist the survivors of earthquake and consequent tsunami in Central Sulawesi province of Indonesia.
Two IAF aircraft – a C-130J and a C-17 – carrying medical personnel and relief material flew for humanitarian assistance from India. Indian naval ships INS Tir, INS Sujatha and INS Shardul have also been mobilised for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Haryana’s MDU Declared Cleanest Government University By HRD Ministry
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the “Swachh Campus rankings” under different categories.
Haryana’s Maharshi Dayanand University has been declared the cleanest government varsity by the HRD Ministry, followed by Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab’s Amritsar.
The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in the national capital has been ranked third among the government institutions followed by Algappa University in Tamil Nadu’s Karaikudi and Acharya Nagarjuna University in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur.
Gandhiji to be posthumously honored with US Congressional Gold
The US House of Representatives have moved a resolution to posthumously award the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal to Mahatma Gandhi in recognition of his promotion of peace and non-violence.
The resolution (HR 6916) was introduced in the US House of Representatives by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney from New York.
The resolution (H R 6916) is co-sponsored by four Indian American lawmakers in the House – Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna and Pramila Jayapal.
The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honour given by the US Congress and very few foreigners have been recipients of this award.
Prominent among those include Mother Teresa (1997), Nelson Mandela (1998), Pope John Paul II (2000), the Dalai Lama (2006), Aung San Suu Kyi (2008), Muhammad Yunus (2010) and Shimon Peres (2014).

Bank of Maharashtra to shut 51 branches
The Public sector bank (PSB), Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) has announced the closure of 51 branches across the country as part of cost-cutting measures being implemented in the banking industry.
All the branches were in urban centres have been identified for the action as they were declared non-viable and were incurring huge losses.
This is the first such measure initiated by any PSB in Maharashtra. The BoM has around 1,900 branches all over India. All the savings, current and other bank accounts have been transferred to the branches with which they have been merged.

Airtel has also acquired the intellectual proprietary rights for two flagship solutions developed by AuthMe.
The telecom company neither disclosed the scale of the deal nor the size of the team acquired.
Airtel has set up Airtel X Labs to drive innovation in the areas of AI, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality and “is building a world-class team for the facility”.

RBI imposes a penalty on Federal Bank
The Kerala-based Federal Bank was fined Rs 5 crore by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for not following procedures on reporting of data on large corporate loans, assessment of risk-based supervision (RBS) by RBI, know-your-customer norms and delay in compensation to customer complaints.
RBI has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 50 million (Rs 5 crore) on Federal Bank Ltd for violation of Section 19(2) of Banking Regulation Act.

Paytm Tops UPI Payments With Over 33% Market Share
Alibaba and SoftBank-backed Paytm has registered over 137 million UPI transactions in September, becoming the leading contributor to Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments with over 33 per cent of the overall market share.
One97 Communications Limited, that owns the brand Paytm, enables BHIM UPI for offline payments and over five million offline merchants, out of its 9.5 million merchant-base.
More than 20 percent of all payments on Paytm are made using BHIM UPI for mobile recharge and payments, electricity and water bills and DTH recharges, among others.
The company also announced the launch of its Spam-proof “SMS Inbox” as part of its “Paytm Inbox”.
SIDBI Launched National Level Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaign ‘Udyam Abhilasha’
The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), has launched a national level entrepreneurship awareness campaign–Udyam Abhilasha, in 115 aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog in 28 States and reaching to around 15,000 youth. .
SIDBI will join to contribute to the transformation mission unleashed for the districts. The six-day campaign would be running parallelly from 3rd October across India.
SIDBI has partnered with Common service centres, e-Governance Services India Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle, set up by the Ministry of Electronics and IT for implementing the campaign.
SIDBI is the principal financial institution for the promotion, financing and development of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise sector.

Apple world’s top brand, Facebook slips to 9th spot: Report
According to global brand consultancy Interbrand’s “Best 100 Global Brands 2018” report, Apple displaced Google to become the top brand in the world in 2018 while Facebook fell to ninth place in the top 100 brands globally.
Amazon achieved a 56 per cent growth to become the third top brand globally. In second place, Google was up 10 per cent to $155.5 billion while Amazon is valued at $100.8 billion.
Microsoft (valued at $92.7 billion) was fourth while Coca Cola (valued at $66.3 billion) came fifth followed by Samsung on sixth spot.

Australia’s Mile Jedinak And Russia’s Igor Akinfeev Retires From International Football
Australian midfielder Mile Jedinak announced his retirement from international football.
The Aston Villa player led his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and this year’s tournament in Russia, having also captained the side to an Asian Cup triumph on home soil in 2015.
Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev has also retired from international soccer after leading the national side as captain to this year’s World Cup quarter-finals on home soil.
He was retiring from international football after playing 111 times for his country.
