United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation-12 September:
- United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is observed every year on September 12 since 2011, to celebrate the economic, social and political developments made in recent years by regions and countries in the south.
- Theme for 2020 is “Pathways toward the SDGs through South-South solidarity beyond COVID-19.”
World First Aid Day-12 September:
- World First Aid Day is observed on the second Saturday of September every year to create awareness about importance of first aid in preventing injuries and saving lives. It was started by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 2000.

Gujarat government announces state’s first Heritage Tourism Policy:
- The policy has provisions to permit use of pre-1950 historical buildings such as heritage palaces and forts, as heritage hotels, heritage museums, heritage banquet halls and heritage restaurants, provided that basic heritage structure is not disturbed.

- Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched the Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework (CSCAF) 2.0, along with the ‘Streets for People Challenge’ in a virtual event organized by the Smart Cities Mission.
India’s ‘largest piggery mission’ launched in Meghalaya:
- Meghalaya has launched India’s Biggest “Piggery Mission” with an outlay of Rs 209 Crores. It is being launched under the aegis of Meghalaya Livestock Enterprises Advancement Society (MLEADS) and funded by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
- The main objective of the Piggery Mission is to reduce the annual import of Pork worth Rs 150 Crore and make Meghalaya self-sufficient (“Aatma Nirbhar”) in pork production over the next 3 years.

Food processing minister inaugurates Organic India unit in Uttar Pradesh:
- Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal through video conferencing inaugurated Organic India Pvt Ltd’s plant at Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh that has been set up at a cost of Rs 55 crore. The food processing sector is growing at 5 percent annually.

13th Aero India-21 to be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka in Feb 2021:
- The 13th edition of Aero India-21 is scheduled to be held at Air Force Station, Yelahanka, Bengaluru from 3 to 07 February 2021. Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh has launched the website for Aero India 2021. Aero India is Asia’s largest air show and aviation exhibition held biennially in Bengaluru since 1996. The website can be accessed at gov.in.

Government increases scholarship amount under ‘Pragati and Saksham’ schemes for J&K students to Rs 50,000:
- Central government has increased the scholarship amount under ‘Pragati and Saksham Scholarship Schemes’ for students of Jammu and Kashmir from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 per annum.
- Pragati scheme provides scholarships to the girls of UT Jammu and Kashmir who belong to families having an annual income of less than Rs 8 lakh and who shall be admitted in the AlCTE approved institutions for the session 2020-21.
Union Home Minister e-launches development projects worth Rs 221 crore in Ahmedabad:
- Home Minister Amit Shah e-dedicated and e-launched development projects worth Rs 221 crore in Ahmedabad district. The works e-dedicated include Rs 130.91 crore pipeline network to carry water from Vaishnavdevi Circle to Shantipura and Sarkhej.

Union Home Ministry grants FCRA registration to Golden Temple:
- Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved registration of the Sri Harmandir Sahib under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010 on 9 September 2020. Sri Harmandir Sahib is famous as Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Global Vertebrate Population Saw Average Decline of 68% in 46 Years; Living Planet Report:
- Freshwater biodiversity declined an average of 84% in the same period, at a rate of 4% per year. The decline in the population of the wildlife species signifies that the average proportional change in animal population sizes and not absolute numbers of individual wildlife lost.
Banking and Economy:
RBI issues guidelines for appointment of Chief Compliance Officer in banks:
- RBI has issued guidelines for the appointment of Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) in banks to ensure a uniform approach with regard to compliance and risk management culture across the banking industry. A person should be a senior executive of the bank.
- Tenor for the appointment of CCO is minimum fixed tenure of not less than 3 years. Age is not more than 55 years.
Union Cabinet gives approval to increase FDI limit from 49% to 74%:
- The new policy raising the cap of foreign direct investment through automatic approval in the defence sector from 49 per cent to 74 per cent now has a ‘National Security’ clause as a condition.
- The government has been focusing on the defence sector to act as an engine for boosting manufacturing in the country, and is aiming to achieve a turnover of Rs 1.75 lakh crore, including exports worth Rs 35,000 crore, by 2025.
Moody’s forecasts India’s GDP at -11.5% for FY21 and 10.6% for FY22:
- Ratings agency Moody’s has projected the GDP growth rate for India to contract 5 percent in the fiscal 2020-21 (FY21) due to the coronavirus pandemic. For 2021-22 (FY22), Moody’s projected the economy of India to grow at 10.6 percent.
PNB launches festival offer ‘Festival Bonanza Offer’ waives processing charges on some loans:
- State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) launched ‘Festival Bonanza Offer’ for its customers to give a push to subdued loan demand due to the COVID-19 crisis.
- Under the ‘Festival Bonanza Offer’, the bank will waive all upfront or processing fees and documentation charges on some of its major retail products like housing loans and car loans.

World’s 2nd largest miner’s CEO Jean Sébastien Jacques quits after destruction of 46,000-yr-old caves:
- Jean Sébastien Jacques, CEO of world’s 2nd largest mining firm Rio Tinto, has resigned after criticism over the decision to legally blow up two 46,000-year-old Aboriginal rock shelters in Australia. It enabled Rio to access $135 mn of high-grade iron ore.
Subhash Kamath elected as chairman of Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI):
- Subhash Kamath, chief executive at advertising agency BBH & Publicis Worldwide, India, has been unanimously elected chairman of the board of governors of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). Kamath, who was serving as ASCI vice-chairman, will replace Rohit Gupta, president, Sony Pictures Networks.
- NS Rajan, managing director at public relations firm Ketchum Sampark P. Ltd. was elected vice-chairman and Shashidhar Sinha, chief executive; Mediabrands India Pvt. Ltd was reappointed as honorary treasurer.
UNICEF India and Indian youth icon Ayushmann Khurrana join hands to advocate for Child Rights:
- UNICEF India announced popular Indian film actor and thought-leader, Ayushmann Khurrana, as its celebrity advocate for promoting rights #ForEveryChild. Ayushmann Khurrana will support UNICEF towards its work around ending violence against children.

- West Bengal government wins WSIS award 2020 for its Sabuj Sathi scheme in WSIS Price Contest. After Kanyashree scheme, another West Bengal government project has received a global prize. The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) handed over the winner prize 2020 to the state government for Sabuj Sathi project through a virtual ceremony.

India ranked 105th in Global Economic Freedom Index 2020; Topped by Hong Kong:
- India has been ranked 105th in the Global Economic Freedom Index 2020 released by the Fraser Institute, Canada. HongKong has topped the ranking followed by Singapore at the second
- India has fallen 26 spots from 79th spot in last year’s ranking. Venezuela has been ranked last among 162 countries. The rankings are prepared based on the data of the year 2018.
Gujarat tops States Startup Ranking Results 2019; Andaman and Nicobar Islands tops in small state/UT category:
- Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) released the much-awaited State Startup Ranking on the basis of the startup policy framework that was announced. Gujarat and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have been named the best performers, while Karnataka and Kerala were named top performers. Aspiring Leaders are Haryana, Jharkhand, Punjab, Telangana, Uttrakhand.
Obituary News:
Social activist and Arya Samaj leader Swami Agnivesh passed away at 81:
- Swami Agnivesh founded Bonded Labour Liberation Front in 1981 and worked against bonded labour. He also led numerous movements against alcoholism. Swami Agnivesh also served as president of the Sarvadeshik Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, World Council of Arya Samaj.
