Environment Ministry releases India’s National REDD+ Strategy

The national Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation  (REDD+) strategy for India  prepared by Indian Council of Forestry and Education, Dehradun for the Government was released in New Delhi by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Harsh Vardhan.

The Paris agreement on climate change also recognises the role of forests in climate change mitigation and calls upon the party countries to take action to implement and support REDD+.

REDD+ attracts highest attention in developing country like India where local communities and forest dwelling tribal communities have high dependency on forests for their livelihoods.


PM Modi to launch India Post Payment Banks across India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) to ensure speedy financial inclusion for people across the country with the leverage of a vast network of the postal department.

With the launch at an event organised at Talkatora Stadium, the IPPB will have 650 branches and 3,250 access points across the country.

All the 1.55 lakh post offices across the country will be linked to the IPPB system by December 31, 2018.

The IPPB will offer a range of products such as savings and current accounts, money transfer, direct benefit transfers, bill and utility payments, and enterprise and merchant payments. These products, and related services, will be offered across multiple channels (counter services, micro-ATM, mobile banking app, SMS and IVR), using the bank’s state-of-the-art technology platform.

Mumbai airport renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport

The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has finally been rechristened as Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport.

A resolution to insert the word ‘Maharaj’ to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was passed by the Maharashtra assembly in 2016.

The decision was reportedly taken by the government as it believed that the Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, should be paid more respect.

The Mumbai Airport was first known as the Sahar International Airport. However, the name was changed in 1999 to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.


NITI Aayog Kickstarts Action On MOVE: India’s 1st Global Mobility Summit 2018

The Government think tank Niti Aayog will hold the India’s first ‘Global Mobility Summit’, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

‘MOVE: Global Mobility Summit’ will be organised in collaboration with various ministries and industry partners.

Over 1,200 participants from across the world including government leadership, industry leaders, think tank and civil society organisations are likely to attend the summit.

The ‘Mobility Week’ will be observed for 7 days—from 31 August to 6 September 2018.


HRD Ministry Introduces ‘Atal Ranking’ For Institutions

The Union government has introduced Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARRIA). It was announced by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar.

ARIIA will rank educational institutions for innovation output based on all major indicators and parameters used globally. It was named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The cell has been established to systematically foster the culture of innovation in all higher education institutions across the country.

AYUSH Minister Inaugurates 4th International Ayurveda Congress at Netherlands

Minister of State, (IC), for AYUSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the Fourth International Ayurveda Congress (IAvC) at Netherlands.

The congress would focus on promotion and propagation of Ayurveda in Netherlands and its neighboring countries of Europe.

A special Seminar is also organized by the Indian Embassy titled “India-Netherlands collaboration in Healthcare, including Ayurveda”.

Two Indians among Ramon Magsaysay Award winners

Two Indians, Bharat Vatwani and Sonam Wangchuk are among six individuals who received the Ramon Magsaysay award, regarded as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize.

Two Indians – one a psychiatrist who works for the mentally-ill street persons and another whose initiative to harness science and culture creatively for economic progress improved the lives of Ladakhi youth – received this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award.

Youk Chhang from Cambodia, Maria de Lourdes Martins Cruz from East Timor, Howard Dee from the Philippines and Vo Thi Hoang Yen from Vietnam are the other winners of the award.

Srinivasan Venkatakrishnan appointed as CEO of Vedanta Resources

Srinivasan Venkatakrishnan has taken the charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vedanta Resources Plc with effect.

Venkatakrishnan has also joined the company’s board of directors.

Venkat had served as the CEO of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd, the world’s largest emerging market gold producer.

‘Vedanta Resources plc is a global diversified metals and mining company with its headquarters in London, United Kingdom.

Balesh Sharma Appointed Vodafone Idea’s 1st CEO

The Vodafone Group and Aditya Birla Group have announced the proposed new leadership team of the merger between two major telecom operators of India – Vodafone India and Idea Cellular.

Balesh Sharma who is currently the chief operating officer of Vodafone India will become the CEO of the merged entity.

He joined Vodafone in 2003 and over the years, has held several senior management positions in India and internationally.

Idea Cellular CEO Kumar Mangalam Birla will become the non-executive chairman of the merged Company.

Badrinath retires from all formats of cricket

The former India and Tamil Nadu batsman S. Badrinath announced his retirement from all formats of the game.

He is a prolific scorer in the first-class arena with more 10,000 runs. He is the middle-order batsman played in two Tests, seven ODIs and one T20 for India between 2008 and 2011.

Badri as he was fondly known, however came to prominence through his valuable contributions for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, having been part of the two title winning sides (2010 and 2011).


Sakshi Choudhary clinches gold medal at World Youth Boxing in Budapest

In boxing, former junior world champion boxer Sakshi Choudhary claimed the gold in the 57-kilogram category at the World Youth Boxing in Budapest, Hungary.

She beat Croatia’s  Nikolina Cacic. Manisha and Anamika settled for silver medals in the 64 kg and 51 kg. Categories.

Jony and Astha Pahwa joined Bhavesh Kattimani, Ankit Khatana, Neha Yadav and Sakshi Gaidhani in settling for bronze medals after semifinal losses in various weight categories.

Gold Medal Winners

Boxing: Amit Panghal clinched gold in the men’s (49kg)

Amit Panghal (49kg) has became the eighth Indian boxer ever to claim a gold medal at the Asian Games with a stunning tactical win over reigning Olympic and Asian champion Hasanboy Dusmatov in the summit.

Vijender Singh and Vikas Krishan were the last set of male gold-medallists for India at the Asian Games. They had won their yellow metal at the 2010 Guangzhou edition.


Bridge: Pranab-Shibhnath pair win gold

In the men’s pair event, India won a gold medal in the bridge competition with Pranab Bardhan and Shibhnath Sarkar.

The Chinese pair of Lixin Yang and Gang Chen won the silver with a score of 378 and the Indonesian combination of Henky Lasut and Freddy Eddy Manoppo bagged the bronze scoring 374.


Silver Medal Winners:

India Women’s hockey team takes silver

Indian women’s team settled for silver in women’s hockey after losing 1-2 in the final against Japan at Asian Games 2018.

The Indians had qualified for the final of the Asian Games after a gap of 20 years gap, having beaten China in the semifinals.


Women’s squash: Indian team settles for silver

The Indian women’s squash team finished second best to a clinical Hong Kong in the final, settling for a successive silver at the 18th Asian Games.

The Indian contingent ended with five medals overall including the women’s team silver, men’s team bronze and three bronze medals in the individual event.
