New Pattern Fill in the blanks – Type 3 Practice questions for SBI PO 2017

In each question, there are two statements which can be combined into a single statement in a number of different ways without changing their meaning. Below them are given three probable starters of such combined sentence. One, two, three or none of them may be correct. Decide upon which is/are correct, if any and answer the questions.

Example : You extended all the help and encouragement to me. I attribute the success of the meeting to your help and guidance.

(i) Never before did you……….

(ii) Despite your help and guidance…….

(iii) But for your help and ……………

(a) only (i)

(b) only (ii)

(c) only (iii)

(d) only (i) and (ii)

(e) None of these

Soln: The two sentences convey the meaning that the meeting was a success because of the help and support extended by the friend.

Option (i) is not relevant to the context. Option (ii) is used for a contra and negative meaning. Option (iii) gives a starter which conveys that `but for’ meaning `without’ your help and support. Since this is negative we can combine with the two given sentences in this way

But for your help and encouragement the meeting would not have been a success or would not have been successful’. Since the starter is negative we take would not – another negative – to convey the positive meaning in the two sentences.
