1. IATC and INTF open the Namibia Trade Commission Office at Ashok Nagar in Tamil Nadu

• The India Africa Trade Council (IATC), along with the India Namibia Trade Forum (INTF), opened the Namibia Trade Commission Office at Ashok Nagar, Chennai.
• The current bilateral trade between India and Namibia is just over $100 million.

2. Supreme Court reiterates that states share an equal responsibility to ensure that people are not booked under ‘Section 66A’ of the IT Act

• Supreme Court had reiterated the fact that states share an equal responsibility to ensure that people are not booked under Section 66A of the IT Act for expressing their opinions freely on social media.
• Section 66A of the IT Act provides three years’ imprisonment if a social media message causes “annoyance” or was found “grossly offensive”.
• It was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2015 since it is vague and worded arbitrarily. But people are still booked and tried under Section 66A of the IT Act.

3. Supreme Court says that Governors can pardon prisoners with death sentences even before they serve minimum of 14 years

• The Supreme Court said that the Governor of a state can pardon prisoners, including those with a death sentence, even before they have served a minimum of 14 years of the prison sentence.
• Governor’s pardoning power overrides CRPC Section 433A, which mandates that a prisoner’s sentence can be remitted only after 14 years of jail. It does not affect the constitutional power conferred on the President/Governor to grant pardon under Articles 72 or 161 of the Constitution. In such cases, the advice of the government is binding on the Head of the State.

4. SBI launches an enhanced security feature named ‘SIM Binding’

• SBI launched an enhanced security feature named ‘SIM Binding’ in YONO and YONO Lite apps. It aims to safeguard the interest of its customers from various digital frauds.
• With the SIM Binding feature, YONO and YONO Lite apps will work only on those devices which have the SIM card of mobile numbers registered with the bank.

5. NASA is set to launch its second Boeing Orbital Flight Test-2 Mission

• NASA is set to launch its second Boeing Orbital Flight Test-2 (OFT-2) second mission. OFT-2 is the second uncrewed flight for Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Programme.
• The Starliner will be launched on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

6. Principal Scientific Adviser virtually inaugurates a decentralised biomedical waste incinerator at Buxar

• Decentralised biomedical waste Incinerator was inaugurated in Bihar’s Buxar by the Principal Scientific Adviser to Government of India, Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan.
• The technology developed by Ganesh Engineering Works was selected through the Biomedical Waste Treatment Innovation Challenge launched in June 2020 by the Waste to Wealth Mission. The mission is one of the nine scientific missions of the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) and is headed by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
• It is a portable, forced draft incinerator capable of handling 50 kg of biomedical waste made of cotton, plastic or similar materials per hour (5 kg per batch), with the provision of waste heat recovery. The unit requires a two square metre area and requires only 0.6 kWh electricity for initial ignition of the waste with an option of auto electricity turn off.

7. Team CLAW is set to lead Operation Blue Freedom to Siachen Glacier

• Team CLAW, which is a team of retired special forces personnel, is set to lead ‘Operation Blue Freedom’ to Siachen Glacier on 15 August 2021. They will lead a group of 20 differently-abled people to attempt a world record by trekking the Siachen Glacier, which is the world’s highest battlefield.
• This was the land world record expedition part of ‘Operation Blue Freedom Triple World Records’.
• CLAW Global was set up in January 2019 by Major Vivek Jacob, a Para SF officer with the aim of teaching life skills to adventurers and people with disabilities (PWD).

7. க்ளா குழு சியாச்சின் பனிப்பாறைக்கு செல்லும் ‘ப்ளூ ஃப்ரீடம் நடவடிக்கை’க்கு தலைமை தாங்க உள்ளது

• ஓய்வு பெற்ற சிறப்புப் படை வீரர்களின் குழுவான க்ளா குழு, ‘ப்ளூ ஃப்ரீடம் நடவடிக்கை’ஐ சியாச்சின் பனிப்பாறைக்கு 15 ஆகஸ்ட் 2021 அன்று வழிநடத்த உள்ளது. உலகின் மிக உயர்ந்த போர்க்களமான சியாச்சின் பனிப்பாறைக்கு மலையேற்றம் செய்வதன் மூலம் உலக சாதனை படைக்க 20 மாற்றுத் திறனாளிகள் உள்ள குழுவை அவர்கள் வழிநடத்துவார்கள்.
• இது ‘ப்ளூ ஃப்ரீடம் மூன்று உலக சாதனைகள் நடவடிக்கை’இன் நில உலக சாதனை பயணத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியாகும்.

8. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur launches theme song for the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 virtually

• Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur launched the theme song “Kar de kamaal tu” for the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 virtually. This theme song has been penned by Sanjeev Singh. This is the biggest ever Indian contingent of 54 para-athletes to participate in the Paralympics.

• 23-year-old Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra got direct qualification into the finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a stunning throw of 86.65 m. This is his first Olympics.

10. Indian wrestlers Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Punia enter semifinals in the Tokyo Olympics 2020

• Ravi Dahiya defeated Georgi Vangelov of Bulgaria in the men’s freestyle 57 kg wrestling to qualify for the semifinals.
• Deepak Punia defeated Zushen Lin of China in the men’s freestyle 86 kg wrestling.

• 23-year-old Lovlina Borgohain won bronze medal by making it to the semifinals in welterweight (140 pounds/63.5 kg) wrestling category. She lost to Turkey’s Surmeneli in semifinals.
