NATIONAL

Bahrain and Maharashtra Government signs MoU on fintech:

• The Economic Development Board (EDB), the investment promotion arm of the Kingdom of Bahrain has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Government to provide a framework for Co-operation between the two authorities to promote FinTech in their respective markets.

Nagaland signs MoU with Estonian academy on e-governance:

• The Nagaland government has inked a MoU with Estonian academy to enlighten the state people on the e-governance models prevailing in the world.

• The main objective of the five-year agreement with the e-Governance Academy of Estonia is to work together to develop and expand scientific collaboration on setting up e-Governance Academy in Nagaland.

• The day long e-Naga Summit was held on the theme, “Building IT infrastructure to make the state of Nagaland the next IT hub of South-East Asia”.

Maharashtra allows citizens to inspect government records under RTI:

• Residents of Maharashtra can now inspect government records in district-level offices and local bodies under the Right to Information (RTI) Act for two hours. 

• The move is aimed at increasing transparency and to cut down the number of RTI applications and appeals in the government offices.

International experts participate in workshop for setting up Ganga Museum:

• The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is planning to set up a Ganga Exhibition and a Ganga Museum for public outreach in New Delhi.

• NMCG is planning to set up a Ganga Exhibition and a Ganga Museum for public outreach, portraying river Ganga’s history and mythology, its importance for the livelihood of a huge population, and efforts for Ganga Rejuvenation.

Govt forms six-member panel to sell 149 fields of ONGC, OIL to private companies:

• The government has constituted a six-member committee to look at selling as many as 149 small and marginal oil and gas fields of state-owned ONGC and OIL to private and foreign companies to boost domestic output, sources said.

• The panel is headed by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar and includes Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha, Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg, Oil Secretary M M Kutty, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant and ONGC Chairman and Managing Director Shashi Shanker.

J-K guv launches AB-PMJAY scheme:

• Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has launched the ambitious “Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)” scheme which would benefit over 31 lakh residents in the state.

• The AB-PMJAY is the world’s largest healthcare scheme which aims at providing portable coverage of Rs 5 lakh per entitled family annually.

Visit of Romanian Foreign Minister to India:

• H.E. Mr. Teodor Melescanu, Foreign Minister of Romania visited India, recently.

• In the discussions, External Affairs Minister, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, highlighted the constructive cooperation between the two countries on international and bilateral issues. 

• During the visit, Romania will formally open its Honorary Consulate in Chennai.

• Romania will take over the Presidency of the European Council in January 2019.

ADB, India Sign $85 Million Loan to Support Odisha Skills Development Project:

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India has signed a $85 million loan to improve the skills development ecosystem in Odisha and establish an advanced skills training center, the World Skill Center (WSC), in the state capital Bhubaneswar.

Pawan Singh first Indian to be elected in ISSF’s judges committee

• Pawan Singh has become the first Indian to be elected one of seven members of the Judges Committee of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF). 

• Mr Singh also holds the post of the Joint Secretary General of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). The ISSF elections take place every four years.

R K Verma assumes charge as Technical Member in Appellate Tribunal for Electricity:

• Shri Ravindra Kumar Verma has assumed the charge as Technical Member in the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL), Ministry of Power for a period of 03 years. Hon’ble Mrs. Justice Manjula Chellur, Chairperson, APTEL administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to Shri Ravindra Kumar Verma.

Luka Modric wins the Ballon d’Or: Real Madrid star ends decade of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominance:

• Luka Modric has been crowned as this year’s Ballon d’Or winner, France Football confirmed at the award ceremony in Paris.

• The Real Madrid midfielder is the first Croatian winner of the individual prize and caps a fine year in which he helped his club win a third consecutive Champions League title and also led his nation to the World Cup final in Russia.

Laureates from Bangladesh and China to receive UNESCO/Emir Jaber al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah Prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities:

• Disabilities’ advocate Vashkar Bhattacharjee (Bangladesh), and private sector enterprise, Tencent (China) will be awarded the UNESCO/Emir Jaber al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah Prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (2018/2019) in a ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters on 3 December, International Day of Persons with disabilities

Delhi minister Imran Hussain gets PETA ‘Hero to Animals’ award for banning Chinese manjha:

• Delhi Minister of Food Supplies, Environment and Forest and Elections Imran Hussain was awarded by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)-India for banning the Chinese manjha, or the glass-coated kite strings, across Delhi on December 1.

• The award, named ‘Hero to Animals,’ was also given to three other individuals and companies that have pushed animal rights forward.

Book on ‘anti-farmer policies’ of Modi government launched:

• The book ‘Modiraj Main Kisan, Double Aamad Ya Double afat’ is authored by Swaraj India President Yogendra Yadav.
• It was launched by agricultural economist Ashok Gulati and the Punjab State Farmers’ and Farm Workers’ Commission Chairman Ajay Vir Jakhar among others.

Atlawim Debebe of Ethiopia wins Pune International Marathon:

• Atlawim Debebe of Ethiopia won the Full Marathon with the timing of 2 hours 17 minutes 17 seconds. Teshome Getachew claimed second and Bekele Asefa third position. Both of them are also from Ethiopia.

• In women’s Full Marathon Pascalia Chepkogei from Kenya stood first with the timing of 2 hour 50 minutes 27 seconds.

• Among Indian runners this year also Karan Singh of Bombay Engineering Group stood first in Men’s category. In women’s Full marathon Urvi Tambe stood first amongst Indian participants. 

• This is 33rd year of Pune International Marathon.

Ullas Narayan wins India’s first ever international medal in ultra-running:

• Ullas Narayan has become India’s first-ever individual medalist in an international ultra-running event by clinching a bronze in 2018 International Association of Ultra Running (IAU) 24 Hour Asia & Oceania Championships in Taipei, Taiwan.

• Narayan finished at the third position, completing a distance of 250 km, just behind two Japanese runners – Yoshihiko Ishikawa (253 km) and Noboyuki Takahashi (252 km).

• A group medal was also won the bronze medal by the Indian team which had Narayan (250 km), Sunil Sharma (202 km) and LL Meena (192 km). Three of them covered a combined distance of 644 km. Japan won the team gold event by covering a distance of 756 km and Australia bagged a silver with 684 km.

• Hemlata Saini and Meena Kotak were the other Indian women to have completed 172 km and 161 km respectively.

2018 Tata Open India International Challenge (Badminton):

It was held in Mumbai, Maharashtra with a Prize Money of the Event is USD 25,000.

Commonwealth Senior Fencing Championships 2018 Highlights:

• It was held in Canberra, Australia. The medal tally was topped by England with 6 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals. India won a total of 3 medals: 2 gold and 1 bronze, in the championship.

IMPORTANT EVENTS OF THE DAY

Indian Navy Day 2018:  December 4

• It is celebrated annually on December 4 every year. India is commemorating the 47th Navy Day to honour the maritime operations by the Navy during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The Maratha Emperor, Chhatarpati Shivaji Bhosle is considered as ‘Father of the Indian Navy’.
