Introduction:
This article covers the topic of Blood Relation questions based on which are asked under the reasoning section in various bank examination. This is one of the easiest and scoring topic of Reasoning. Once you know about the blood relations tricks, you can get full marks from this chapter in a few minutes. Lets know more about this topic.
Some Common Blood Relationships are as Follows:
In blood relations, we should know the relation between two persons by using the information given to you. |
RELATIONSHIPS: |
1) Mother’s or Father’s father – Grandfather (Maternal grandfather/Paternal grandfather). |
2) Mother’s or Father’s mother – Grandmother (Maternal grandmother/Paternal grandmother) |
3) Mother’s or Father’s brother – Uncle |
4) Mother’s or Father’s Sister – Aunt |
5) Wife’s father or husband’s father – father-in-law |
6) Wife’s mother or husband’s mother – mother-in-law |
7) Son’s wife – daughter-in-law |
8) Daughter’s husband – son-in-law |
9) Husband’s or wife’s brother – brother-in-law |
10) Husband’s or wife’s sister – sister-in-law |
11) Brother’s or sister’s son – nephew |
12) Brother’s or sister’s daughter – niece |
13) Uncle’s or Aunt’s son or daughter – cousin |
Some more tips:
- Grand father’s (daughter-in-law) = Mother
- Father’s son = Brother
- Father’s daughter = Sister
- Grand father’s son = Father / Uncle
- Grand father’s only son(Same in the Case of Grand mother) = Father

Examples Problems:
Sachin, who is Asha’s Son, say to Sara, “Your father Ramesh is the Elder Brother of my Mother, who’s father Name is Arjun.” How is arjun related to sara?
- a) Father
- b) Father- in- Law
- c) Grand Father
- d) Maternal Uncle
Solution:
Arjun has two children, One is Asha and Ramesh. Ramesh is the father of sara. So, Arjun is the grandfather of Sara that is clearly shown in the below diagram.
Example 2: If A + B means A is the mother of B; A – B means A is the brother B; A % B means A is the father of B and A x B means A is the sister of B, which of the following shows that P is the maternal uncle of Q?
(A) Q – N + M x P
(B) P + S x N – Q
(C) P – M + N x Q
(D) Q – S % P
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
P – M → P is the brother of M
M + N → M is the mother of N
N x Q → N is the sister of Q
Therefore, P is the maternal uncle of Q.
Example 3: M is the father of N who is the son of V. In order to know the relation of M to P, which of the statement/statements is/are necessary?
- P is the brother of V.
- The daughter of N is the granddaughter of V.
(A) Only 1
(B) Only 2
(C) Either 1 or 2
(D) 1 and 2 both
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
M is the father of N and N is the son of V.
Hence, V is the mother of N.
From (1), P is the brother of V
Therefore, M is the brother-in-law of P because V is the wife of M.
From (2), the daughter of N, is the granddaughter of V. From this we do not get any relation of M to P.
