Bhubaneswar becomes first Indian city to win the elusive Pierre L’enfant Awards 2017:

    Bhubaneswar, the capital city of the Indian state Odisha, has become the first Indian city to win the elusive Pierre L’enfant International Planning excellence award 2017.

The award is given out by the American Planning Association (APA) for good and advanced town planning and engaging its residents in the planning process. The APA Awards recipients will be honoured at the Awards Luncheon at APA’s National Planning Conference in New York on May 8, 2017.


Government launches new Test and Treat policy for HIV:

    The government launched a new policy for HIV under which anyone who is tested and found positive will get the necessary treatment.

People with HIV, who have a CD4 cell count below 200, are at significant risk of developing serious illnesses, and the government currently provides free treatment to people with a count of 400 and below.

First direct London-China train completes 12,000 km run:

    The first freight train linking China directly to the UK arrived in the eastern Chinese city of Yiwu after a 12,000-kilometre (7,500-mile) trip, becoming the world’s second-longest rail route.

The journey is the latest effort in China’s drive to strengthen trade links with Western Europe along a modern-day “Silk Road” route.

 


India, Eurasia union to seal pact:

    India is set to formalism a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union, clearing the decks for negotiations on deepening trade relations with the five former Soviet republics.

The Eurasian Economic Union comprises Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The FTA is expected to open up a huge market with a trade potential of $37 to 62 billion.

India’s economy to become 3rd largest, surpass Japan, Germany by 2030:

    India is well poised to become the third-largest economy by 2030, surpassing four developed nations Japan, Germany, Britain and France, according to projections by a US government agency.

The estimate by the United States Department for Agriculture Economic Research Service (USDA), based on data collated by World Bank and IMF, assumes the Indian economy will expand annually at an average 7.4% to $6.84 trillion by 2030. This will make it bigger than that of the economies of Japan ($6.37 trillion) and Germany ($4.38 trillion).


Andhra Bank wins best performing bank award:

Andhra Bank has been awarded as best performing bank amongst all Public Sector Banks for its performance in enrollment of Atal Pension Yojana (APY) accounts.

The award was received by Ajit Kumar Rath, executive director, Andhra Bank from Minister of State for Finance, Santosh Kumar Gangwar at New Delhi in the function organised by Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).

‘Solar Calculator’ Android app developed by ISRO for computation of solar energy:

ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) has developed a ‘Solar Calculator’ android app for the computation of solar energy potential.

The app has been developed at the behest of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India and is a very useful tool for installation of PV solar panels for tapping solar energy.

 


India to launch GSAT-9 communication satellite on May 5: ISRO

India will launch communication satellite GSAT-9 using its heavy rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F09) on May 5.

According to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the GSAT-9 communication satellite is being launched with an objective to provide different communication applications in Ku-band with coverage over South Asian countries. It would blast off from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Coca-Cola India names TKK Krishnakumar as president, Kini leaves:

 Coca-Cola India replaces Venkatesh Kini with TKK Krishnakumar as president of its India and South West Asia business unit.

Krishnakumar is currently chief executive officer and South West Asia regional director of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd, the company-owned bottling unit. The appointment is effective 1st May.

Tendulkar inaugurates Sports med Active:

 Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar inaugurated  Sportsmed Active, an enhancement and rehab arm of specialty clinic Sportsmed in Mumbai.

Sports med Active is an integrated rehab service where a combination of exercise therapy (physiotherapy) and manual medicine (osteopathy) is used to restore body functions.

 


Harika adjudged best at Reykjavik Open:

   Indian Grand Master Harika Dronavalli ended her campaign on a high note with a win against Jakob Pfreundt of Germany at the Reykjavik Open. She was adjudged the ‘best women’s player of the tournament’ and gained two rating points to add the cherry on top of the cake.
