India’s first book village to come up in Maharashtra’s Bhilar:

Bhilar, tiny hamlet in Satara district of Maharashtra, popular for its strawberries is all set to embrace the tag of India’s first ‘village of books’, a concept inspired by Britain’s Hay-on-Wye, the state government has decided to convert the village near the twin hill-stations of Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani into a reader’s paradise.
Around 15,000 books (in Marathi) would be made available in the village premises. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the initiative ‘Pustakanche Gaon’ on May 4.

 

 


India’s first ever transgender sports meet in Kerala a runaway hit:

    Kerala successfully organised a sports meet for transgenders, the first of its sort in the country. At least 130 athletes belonging to the third sex participated in the event, at the heart of the state capital.

This time there was no age bracket. But next time we will classify events as junior, senior and other levels said by the Sreekutty president of the Sexual and Gender Minority, an organisation working for the uplift of third sex.

 


Uma Bharti launches Water Conservation Programme for Bundelkhand:

    Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Sushri Uma Bharti launched Bundelkhand water conservation programme at Bandri in Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh. This programme will benefit drought prone areas of Bundelkhand region.

Turkey blocks access to Wikipedia:

    Turkey has blocked online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, the telecommunications watchdog, citing a law allowing it to ban certain websites for the protection of the public or a threat to national security. And reportedly for articles claiming links between Ankara and terror groups.

 

 


Govt to give Rs 35 cr to children of freedom fighters in Bangladesh:

    India will give Rs 35 crore to children of freedom fighters in Bangladesh in the next five years under the new ‘Muktijodha scholarship’ scheme, said by the High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

Janalakshmi receives licence for small finance bank:

    Janalakshmi Financial Services (JFS), a microfinance provider has received final licence from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to set up Small Finance Bank. The Small Finance Bank will commence operations in the second quarter of the current financial year.

Its aims to addressing financial inclusion and to empower the unbanked segments of the society with several financial tools such as savings account, cashless transactions and so on.

Japan’s top honour for Ashwani:

    The Japanese government has selected former Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar for the “Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun”, in recognition of his achievements in bolstering India-Japan ties.

 

 

 


Sudarsan strikes gold at Moscow sand art event:

Noted sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik from Odisha won the jury prize gold medal at the 10th Moscow Sand Art Championship.

Twenty five sculptors from around the world participated in the event. Mr. Pattnaik said he had created a 10-feet-tall sculpture of Lord Ganesh and inscribed ‘Go Green’ on it.

 

 


Two Indian-Americans selected for ACE fellowship:

    Two Indian-Americans are among 46 emerging college and university leaders selected by American Council on Education, ACE in Houston for its prestigious fellowship.

Ritu Raju of Houston Community college in Houston Texas and Sundeep R Muppidi of the University of Hartford in Hartford (HCC) Connecticut were named Fellows as part of the ACE Fellows Programme 2017-18 class.


Poet Sankha Ghosh conferred Jnanpith Award:

    Eminent Bengali poet and literary critic Sankha Ghosh was conferred the 52nd Jnanpith Award by President Pranab Mukherjee. The 85-year-old poet was awarded with Sahitya Akademi in the year 1977 for his work “Baabarer praarthanaa”.

Jehan Daruvala becomes 1st Indian to take pole in FIA F3 European Championship:

    Jehan Daruvala, in his rookie season at the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. He became the first Indian to take pole in the F3 European series, securing the top spot on the starting grid for Race 1 of the second round of the championship in Monza, Italy.
