NATIONAL

IT Minister Released ‘Digital North East Vision 2022’ in Guwahati

The Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has released a vision document for a digital northeast that aims to improve people’s lives by capacity building of government staff and doubling BPO strength in the region. He Unveiled the plans under the ‘Digital North East: Vision 2022’.

A cloud hub for the northeast will be set up in Guwahati and capacity building for 50,000 government staff will be taken up using digital technologies.

The number of seats planned for BPOs in the northeastern states will be doubled to 10,000 while the network of common service centres will be expanded to cover all villages.


Rajnath Singh Inaugurates NDMC Smart City Projects

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said the rollout of the Smart City projects will help New Delhi emerge as a world class city.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has set an example before other aspiring Smart Cities in the country to follow.

The various projects inaugurated by Shri Rajnath Singh include Smart Poles, Solar Tree, Ideation Centre, 50 LED interactive screens, Ambedkar Vatika and two hi-tech nurseries, four mechanical road sweepers, two litter picking machines and ten auto tippers.

He also launched MTNL’s hi-speed Broadband on Optical Fiber & Hi-Speed Wi-Fi in Connaught Place.


India To Launch 2nd Lunar Mission ‘Chandrayaan-2’ on January 3, 2019

India’s second moon mission Chandrayaan-2 will now be launched in January 3, 2019 instead of later this year as the design was changed to enable it land on the lunar surface.

ISRO would have two missions Chandrayan-2 by GSLV Mark 3 and the PSLV P45 launching RA-SAT 2B next year.

The 800-crore rupees is the cost of “Chandrayaan-2” lunar mission.

The 3,890-kg Chandrayaan-2, which will be launched onboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk-3, will orbit around the moon and study its lunar conditions to collect data on its topography, mineralogy and exosphere.


Two New Space Research Technology Centres to come up in Jammu and Agartala

The Union minister Jitendra Singh has announced that Jammu and Tripura will get the country’s first full-fledged Space Technology Research Centre.

While the first centre in north India will function under the aegis of Jammu-based Central University, the Tripura centre will work under the aegis of Agartala-based National Institute of Technology (NIT).

These centres will devote to research, academics and post graduation study. They will offer an opportunity for scholars and youngsters who have aptitude for space science to explore a new career and research option.


Smitha Crishna, Roshni Nadar top India’s richest women list

Smitha V Crishna of the Godrej Group, with wealth worth ₹37,570 crore, is the richest Indian woman.

It was compiled by Kotak Wealth Management and Hurun Report India based on the net worth of the women as on June 30, 2018.

Crishna is on the board of Godrej Industries and owns one fifth of the Godrej Group.

Roshni Nadar of HCL (₹30,200 crore) is the second richest woman in the country, followed by Indu Jain of Bennett Coleman (₹26,240 crore) and Kiran Majumdar-Shaw of Biocon (₹24,790 crore).

The threshold for the top 10 richest women this year was over ₹8,000 crore, while the average wealth of each of these 100 women was about ₹4,000 crore.

Nepal-India Literature Festival 2018 Begins in Birgunj

The Nepal-India Literature Festival 2018 has begun in Birgunj, Nepal.

Inaugurating the festival Chief Minister of Province 2 Mohammad Lalbabu Raut said that it will play an important role in further strengthening Indo-Nepal ties.

He said that both countries have age old religious, cultural and social relations and literary exchange will further boost it. The event is organised by Nepal India Co-operation Forum.

On this occasion eminent writers from both the countries were also felicitated. Around 250 participants from India and Nepal attending the two day festival.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

SBI ranked as India’s most patriotic brand: Survey by UK based YouGov

India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) is considered to be the most patriotic brand, according to a survey.

SBI is followed by Tata Motors, Patanjali, Reliance Jio and BSNL. The survey conducted by UK-based online market research and data analytics firm YouGov.

In terms of sectors, the financial sector topped the chart of the most patriotic brands with two leading names -SBI and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) – followed by auto, consumer goods, food and telecom sectors.

N Raghuram elected Chair of International Nitrogen Initiative

 

The Indian scientist-academician, N Raghuram, has been elected as Chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI), a global policy making initiative.

A professor at the GGS Indraprastha University, New Delhi, Raghuram is the first Indian and Asian to be elected to the Chair. He will succeed Mark Sutton of the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Edinburgh.


Govt dismisses former MD Usha Ananthasubramanian

The government has dismissed Usha Ananthasubramanian, former managing director of Punjab National Bank and Allahabad Bank, from service.

Ananthasubramanian had been at the leadership roles in PNB in two stints. She headed the bank between August 2015 and May 2017, before moving to Allahabad Bank. She was executive director at the bank from July 2011 to November 2013.

Ease of Living Index 2018 released: Pune tops; Delhi at 65

Pune has emerged as the easiest city to live in India according to the Ease of Living Index 2018 released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The survey is a first-of-its-kind inaugural one started this year by the govt.

It surveyed a total of 111 cities of the country. Pune is followed by two cities of Maharashtra — Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai.

Delhi has been ranked 65 in the Ease of Living Index while Chennai is at 14.


BBC’s ‘Women Who Changed The World’ List: Marie Curie Tops, Mother Teresa 20th

The BBC History magazine compiled a list of “100 women who changed the world”.

Marie Curie, the pioneering scientist has topped a poll asking which woman has had the most significant impact on world history. She was the first person to win two Nobel prizes.

The Polish-born French physicist and chemist Marie Curie is the one who discovered polonium and radium with her husband.

She is followed by Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst, Ada Lovelace and Rosalind Franklin. Mother Teresa has ranked 20th in the list.


Railways Ministry releases Report on Station Cleanliness

The Railway Ministry has released the third party survey report on station cleanliness conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI).

The audit-cum survey was conducted by the Railways to increase the level of cleanliness standards.

The third survey declared Jodhpur (Rajasthan) as the cleanest railway station in India followed by Jaipur in Rajasthan and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

The third cleanliness survey covered 407 stations, including 75 stations in A1 and 332 stations in A category stations.

Spanish international player and Manchester City midfielder David Silva retires

Spanish midfielder David Silva has joined compatriots Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique in retiring from international football.

The 32-year-old Manchester City playmaker won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, a key player during Spain’s golden era.

Silva scored 35 goals in 125 games for the national team over 12 years and was described as ‘Spain’s Lionel Messi’ by former coach Vicente del Bosque.


Viraj Madappa wins maiden Asian title

Indian golfer Viraj Madappa won his maiden title on the Asian Tour at Take Solutions Masters in Bengaluru. Now, he became the youngest Indian to win on the Asian Tour.

The earlier record was held by Gaganjeet Bhullar, who won the Indonesia Invitational and Shubhankar Sharma won Joburg Open at the age of 21.

Zimbabwean Scott Vincent (68), Argentine Miguel Carballo (71) and the Thai duo Suradit Yongcharenchai (66) and Danthai Boonma (70) shared the second place.


James Anderson becomes 1st bowler to take 100 wickets at Lord’s

James Anderson became the first player to take 100 wickets during day four of the second Test versus India.

Anderson took the wicket of Murali Vijay in the second over of India’s second innings to reach the landmark. This was also his 550th Test wicket.

Anderson is overall the second bowler to take 100 wickets at a single venue after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan.


Madurai Panthers won TNPL 2018

Madurai Panthers won the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2018) title.

They defeated Dindigul Dragons by seven wickets.

The finals was held at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai.
