National Safe Motherhood Day – 11 April             

  • National Safe Motherhood Day is an annual celebration on 11 April to raise awareness about adequate access to care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal services.
  • In 2003, the Government of India declared 11 April, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi (wife of Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi) as National Safe Motherhood Day.

World Parkinson’s Day – 11 April

  • World Parkinson’s Day is observed on 11 April every year. The day is to create awareness about the disease among the general public. The disease can cause slowness of the movements, stiffness, and shakiness of the body.
  • James Parkinson was the first to describe “paralysis agitans”, a condition that would later be renamed Parkinson’s disease by Jean-Martin Charcot.

International Day of Human Space Flight – 12 April

  • The International Day of Human Space Flight is the annual celebration, held on 12 April of the anniversary of the first human space flight by Yuri Gagarin. It was proclaimed at the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly on 7 April 2011, a few days before the 50th anniversary of the flight.

Flipkart to set up Asia’s largest fulfilment centre in Gurugram, Haryana

  • Haryana government has approved allotment of 140 acres of land to e-commerce major Flipkart for setting up its largest fulfilment centre in Asia, having a covered area of 3 million square feet in Patli Hajipur in Gurugram district’s Manesar.
  • The approval was granted in a meeting of the Haryana Enterprise Promotion Board (HEPB) which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Ghaziabad issued India’s first municipal green bonds

  • Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) announced successfully raising and listing India’s first Green Municipal bond issue. Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation issued municipal green bonds in BSE and raised 150 crore at 8.1 per cent.
  • Money will be used to clean up dirty water by setting up a tertiary water treatment plant and supply piped water through water meters to places like Sahibabad.

Ladakh plans to provide tap water connection to every household by 2022

  • Ladakh has planned to achieve the target of providing a tap connection to every rural household by 2022 under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The Union Territory presented its annual action plan to provide tap water connection to the rural households before the committee of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
  • The panel carries out rigorous scrutiny of the proposed annual action plan prepared by states and Union Territories before finalising the same.

Kiren Rijiju inaugurated Khelo India State Centre of Excellence for rowing in Srinagar

  • Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) for rowing at the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Water Sports Academy. KISCE will focus on rowing and will be provided a first-time grant of 145.16 lakh and an annual recurring grant of Rs. 96.17 lakh.
  • He also announced a host of new competitions at the Valley that the J&K Council is doing their best to make the Water Sports facility world-class.

Singapore became the first country to ratify mega free trade agreement RCEP

  • Singapore ratified the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement becoming the first participating country to do so in a multi-nation trade pact that brings together the 10 ASEAN economies as well as Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea.
  • The RCEP, an initiative led by China, is the world’s largest free trade agreement but India had opted out of it though it had been widely expected to be an important market with a large consumer base and export potential.

SBI Mutual Fund became the first mutual fund house to cross Rs. 5 lakh crore average AUM mark

  • SBI Funds Management private limited became the first mutual fund house in India to cross the 5 lakh crore average assets under management (AUM) mark. SBI MF’s average AUM has grown to Rs. 5.04 lakh crore from Rs. 3.73 lakh crore, recording a growth of 35 % during the financial year 2020-21.

  • Flipkart, India’s leading homegrown e-commerce marketplace announced a strategic and commercial partnership with the Adani Group to strengthen Flipkart’s supply chain infrastructure and further enhance its ability to serve its rapidly growing base of customers.
  • AdaniConneX will build their new Tier 4 data centre and Adani Logistics, India’s leader in logistics, will build their 534,000 sqft fulfilment centre.

PayPal partnered with FlexiLoans to offer MSME, Freelancers Collateral-Free Loans

  • PayPal entered into a partnership with FlexiLoans to provide freelancers, women entrepreneurs, sole proprietors, and MSME’s with collateral-free business loans. It aims to offer MSME’s working capital for business expansion, purchasing stock, inventory, and other business-related expenditures.

Bharti AXA Life Insurance established a bancassurance partnership with Fincare Small Finance Bank

  • Bharti AXA Life Insurance a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and AXA, one of the world’s insurance companies announced its bancassurance partnership with Fincare Small Finance Bank, for the distribution of life insurance products through the bank’s pan-India network.
  • Under this arrangement, Bharti AXA Life Insurance will offer its comprehensive suite of life insurance products, including protection, savings, and investment plans, to the customers of Fincare Small Finance Bank across its 747 branches and digital network presence across the country.

Justice Sanjay Yadav appointed acting Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court

  • Justice Sanjay Yadav, the senior-most judge of the Allahabad High Court has been appointed as the acting its chief justice. Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Govind Mathur retired recently. Judges of the high court retire at the age of 62 years.

Sonu Sood appointed as the brand ambassador for Punjab’s anti-COVID vaccination drive

  • Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has been made the brand ambassador for Punjab’s anti-coronavirus vaccination programme. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh made the announcement.
  • During the coronavirus-induced lockdown last year, the actor had helped migrants reach their home states. Sood catapulted to the national spotlight for feeding thousands of underprivileged people amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Filmmaker Guneet Monga will be conferred with the honour of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans I’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), the second-highest civilian French honour.
  • Before Guneet Monga, acclaimed Indian artists like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Anurag Kashyap, Kalki Koechlin, and Nandita Das have also received this prestigious French honour.

Indian business tycoon Yusuffali honoured with a top civilian award in Abu Dhabi

  • Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has honoured Indian-origin businessman Yusuffali MA and 11 other individuals with Abu Dhabi’s top civilian award for their noble and charitable contributions to the community.
  • Yusuffali is the Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi-based LuLu Group which operates hypermarkets and retail companies in many countries.

Punjabi actor Satish Kaul passed away at 74

  • Veteran Punjabi actor Satish Kaul, who featured in several Hindi films and shows including “Mahabharat”, died on Saturday due to COVID-19 related complications. He worked in over 300 Punjabi and Hindi films including “Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha”, “Aunty No 1” and the TV show “Vikram Aur Betaal”.
