Human Rights Day – 10 December
- Human Rights Day is observed on 10 December every year to commemorate the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the first worldwide enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievement of the nascent United Nations.
- This year (2021) marks the 73rd anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
- The theme of Human Rights Day for 2021 is ‘Equality reducing inequalities, advancing HUMAN rights’.

Union Cabinet approves the Ken-Betwa river interlinking project
- India’s first river interlinking project, connecting Ken River in Madhya Pradesh with Betwa in Uttar Pradesh, got approval from the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The total cost of the Ken-Betwa river link project has been assessed at ₹44,605 crores and it will be completed in eight years.
- It will generate 103 MW of hydropower and 27 MW of solar power.
- This project involves the transfer of water from the Ken River to the Betwa River through the construction of Daudhan Dam and a canal linking the two rivers, the Lower Orr Project, Kotha Barrage and Bina Complex Multipurpose Project.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister launches the Milk Price Incentive Scheme
- Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the Milk Price Incentive Scheme that will benefit around 53,000 individuals because the money will be directly into the beneficiaries’ accounts through Direct Bank Transfer (DBT).
- Uttarakhand Government will invest ₹444.62 crores to create 500 milk vending stations in Uttarakhand.
- The Uttarakhand Government has launched the Ganga cow scheme and an incentive payment of ₹3–4 per litre of milk to encourage milk production and meet demand on time.

Paytm Payments Bank receives scheduled bank status from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
- Paytm Payments Bank has received the scheduled bank status from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in which the bank has been included in the Second Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
- It can now participate in government and other large corporation-issued request for proposals (RFPs), RBI-run primary auctions, fixed-rate and variable rate repos, reverse repos and marginal standing facility. It will also be eligible to partner in government-run financial inclusion schemes and explore other new business opportunities.

Bank of Maharashtra partners with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to launch contactless RuPay credit cards
- Bank of Maharashtra (BOM) has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to launch BoM’s first contactless credit card on the RuPay network.
- The BoM Platinum RuPay contactless credit card has been designed with a variety of features to meet the needs of customers. On their initial retail purchases of ₹1000 or more, users of this card will receive 100 reward points.
- Customers who use the BoM Platinum RuPay contactless credit card are covered by the card liability cover, which means they will have no liability if they report a fraud. As part of this cover, they will be safeguarded against online scams such as card counterfeiting and card skimming.
- This card also comes with a ₹200 fuel surcharge waiver for transactions between ₹500–₹4000 across all fuel stations in India.

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) gets the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s approval to raise its stake in IndusInd Bank to 9.99%
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given its approval for Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to increase its shareholding in Hinduja-owned IndusInd Bank from 4.95% to 9.99% of the total issued and paid-up share capital.
- This approval is valid for one year up to 8 December 2022.
- In November 2021, LIC also got the RBI’s approval to raise its stake in Kotak Mahindra Bank to 9.99% from 4.96% for one year.
- As per the RBI norms, approval is required to increase an entity’s stake in private banks beyond 5%.
India Post Payments Bank enables recurring payments with the National Payment Corporation of India
- India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) and Bharat BillPay, a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), enabled recurring payments that will be facilitating doorstep cash-based assisted bill payments anywhere in India through the Bharat BillPay platform.
- The customers of IPPB and non-IPPB will be able to use the bank’s mobile banking service to perform recurring transactions such as mobile post-paid, D2H recharge, school fees and other utility services.
- Using the IPPB digital banking platform, the customers will be able to view updated transaction history, create transaction alerts and reminders and raise or track complaints about Bharat BillPay transactions.

Reliance Industries Limited tops the 2021 Burgundy Private Hurun India List
- Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has topped the list of 500 most valuable companies in India in the 2021 Burgundy Private Hurun India LIST.
- RIL was ranked at the top in the ‘Burgundy Private Hurun India 500’ List with a value of ₹16.65 lakh crores, whereas Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and HDFC Bank were ranked second and third, with a value of ₹13.09 lakh crores and ₹9.05 lakh crores.

Karnataka Bank receives two DigiDhan awards from the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)
- The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has awarded two DigiDhan awards to Karnataka Bank for achieving the target with the highest percentage of BHIM–UPI transactions in the private sector bank category for the past two fiscal years 2019–20 and 2020–21.
Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi is set to receive the Royal Gold Medal 2022 from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
- Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi will receive one of the world’s highest honours for architecture, the Royal Gold Medal 2022, from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
- Some of the iconic buildings designed by Balkrishna Doshi include the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, Ahmedabad School of Architecture (renamed as CEPT University in 2002, which promoted collaborative learning) and Aranya Low-Cost Housing (1989) in Indore, which won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995.
- Sir David Adjaye, a relatively young architect, was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 2021, making him the first Black recipient in the prize’s 173-year history.

- Federal Bank has joined hands with Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited to provide a wide range of innovative health insurance products (Bancassurance) for the bank’s 8.90 million customers.
- Federal Bank’s customers can avail benefits of Star Health’s retail products and group affinity products through the bank’s various distribution channels.
Bharti Airtel partners with Invest India for Startup Innovation Challenge
- Bharti Airtel launched the Airtel India Startup Innovation Challenge in partnership with Invest India to demonstrate differentiated solutions areas like 5G, cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) and digital entertainment.
- A selected few of the 10 startups will be offered to be on-boarded onto the Airtel Startup Accelerator Programme and hyper-scale their company with Airtel.
- Under this programme, startups gain access to Airtel’s core platform strengths of data, distribution, network and payments.

NASA launches an X-ray telescope to study black holes
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched an X-ray telescope named Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer or IXPE by SpaceX to help scientists in better understand of what’s inside a black hole and bright pulsars, which are flipping stars that generate beams of electromagnetic radiation from their magnetic poles.
- This IXPE is designed to examine some of the universe’s most energetic objects, such as an exploded star’s remnants or intense particle jets ejected from feeding black holes.
- This NASA telescope was first announced in 2017 and will first X-ray telescope capable of sensing polarisation.
- IXPE is a joint collaboration between NASA and the Italian Space Agency and is expected to begin primary science operations in January 2022.

Indian weightlifter S. Bidyarani Devi wins silver medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021
- Indian weightlifter Bidyarani Devi won the silver medal in the women’s 55 kg category for India at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
- She lifted a total of 198 kg (84+114) and finished second behind Nigeria’s Adijat Olarinoye.
