International Mountain Day – 11 December

  • International Mountain Day is celebrated annually on 11 December to promote awareness about mountain communities around the globe. This day was officially declared by the United Nations’ General Assembly Resolution in December 2002.
  • The theme of International Mountain Day for 2021 is ‘sustainable mountain tourism’.

NEDFI announces the Atmanirbhar Hastshilpkar scheme for the artisans

  • North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi) has introduced the ‘Atmanirbhar Hastshilpkar’ scheme to support artisans in the Northeast region.
  • The objective of this scheme is to provide financial assistance in the form of term loans for income-generating activities. The credit facility is collateral-free and carries a subsidised interest rate of 6 per cent per annum, which is repayable in 24 months.

National Commission for Women launches an online resource centre on cyber safety under the ‘We Think Digital’ programme

  • National Commission for Women (NCW) has launched an online resource centre to offer help for women in distress on issues pertaining to online safety, such as cyberbullying, cyberstalking, financial frauds, etc., under the ‘We Think Digital’
  • This programme will be run collaboratively by the NCW, Facebook and Cyber Peace Foundation.

SEBI extends the deadline for risk management framework implementation till April 2022

  • Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has extended the deadline till 01 April 2022 for implementing the risk management framework for mutual funds as well as the two-tier structure for benchmarking of certain categories of schemes. This implementation was to come into force from 01 January 2022.
  • SEBI has also come out with guidelines on the usage of pool accounts by mutual funds as well as norms for investment in the Bills Re-Discounting Scheme (BRDS).

Bank of Baroda signs an MoU with Centrum Housing Finance Limited for sourcing and financing housing loans

  • Bank of Baroda (BoB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Centrum Housing Finance Limited (CHFL) for sourcing and financing housing loan borrowers under a co-lending model.
  • Under this partnership, BoB will be able to penetrate deep into the markets of tier 2 and tier 3 cities at very competitive rates. BoB would also be able to garner more and more housing loan segment business to the extent of ₹1000 crores in a financial year.

ISRO collaborates with Oppo’s Indian arm to strengthen the research and development of the NavIC messaging service

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has signed an agreement with Chinese smart devices maker Oppo’s Indian arm to strengthen the research and development of the NavIC messaging service.
  • This NavIC messaging service is mainly used for broadcasting safety-of-life alerts in areas with poor or no communication, particularly in the oceans. It is also capable of broadcasting short messages.

Union Defence ministry signs an MoU with IITE Gandhinagar

  • The Union Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) in Gandhinagar to facilitate the training of teachers at Sainik schools.
  • This MoU is for five years with effect from January 2022, under which more than 800 teachers from all Sainik schools will be trained through courses named ‘Gurudiksha’ and ‘Pratibaddhta’.

Indian mathematician Neena Gupta receives the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians 2021

  • Professor Neena Gupta, a mathematician at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, was awarded the 2021 Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from developing countries for her outstanding work in affine algebraic geometry and commutative algebra.
  • She is the third woman to receive the Ramanujan Prize. Ramanujan Prize is given annually to an eminent mathematician who is less than 45 years of age on 31 December of the year of the award.

Azim Premji receives Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration Award 2021

  • Founder Chairman of Wipro Limited and founder of Azim Premji Foundation, Azim Premji received the 10th annual Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration Award in recognition of his contributions to society through the foundation.
  • This award was jointly established by Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC) and the US-based Vellore CMC Foundation.

Norway’s Magnus Carlsen wins the FIDE World Chess Championship for the fifth time

  • Reigning world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defended his title and won the 2021 FIDE World Championship in Dubai. He defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia. This is his fifth world championship title.

India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins the gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent

  • The 19-year-old Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the gold medal in the men’s 67 kg category at the Commonwealth Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • Earlier, Guru Raja won the silver medal in the men’s 61 kg among Commonwealth nations after lifting a total weight of 265 kg with 117 kg in Snatch and 148 kg in Clean and Jerk. He was eighth on the overall world leader board.

Divyansh Singh Panwar wins both the Senior and Junior air rifle national titles in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal

  • Former world number one Divyansh Singh Panwar won both the senior and junior air rifle gold medals in the 64th National Shooting Championship held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • He beat Maharashtra’s Rudrankksh Patil to clinch the gold medal. Hriday Hazarika won the bronze medal.
