SAARC Charter Day – 8 December

  • The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Charter Day is observed on 8 December annually to commemorate the adoption of the SAARC Charter.
  • This year (2021) marks the 37th anniversary of SAARC Charter Day.
  • The SAARC Charter was adopted in Dhaka on 8 December 1985 during its first summit.
  • This charter was signed by the leaders of eight South Asian nations — Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

International Anti-corruption Day – 9 December

  • International Anti-corruption Day is observed on 9 December every year to highlight the rights and responsibilities of every part of society, including states, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth — in tackling corruption.
  • The theme of International Anti-corruption Day for 2021 is ‘Your right, your role: Say no to corruption’.

Union Education Ministry launches a mobile application named Bhasha Sangam

  • Union Education Ministry has launched a mobile application named Bhasha Sangam to enable at least 75 lakh people to learn basic conversation skills in languages other than their mother tongue.
  • This application has 100+ sentences designed on different themes that allow people to learn basic conversation in 22 Indian languages, test themselves and generate online certificates.
  • It also intends to promote the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat by allowing individuals all around India to learn the languages of different Indian states and gain a better understanding of their cultures.

Pune is set to host a joint multi-agency exercise for BIMSTEC countries

  • Pune is set to host a multilateral and multi-agency exercise for BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) member countries, focusing on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations between 20–22 December.
  • This exercise, named ‘PANEX-21’, aims to foster joint planning and build regional cooperation for responding to natural disasters.

PayPhi becomes the first certified NPCI tokenisation service for Indian businesses on RuPay platform

  • Phi Commerce’s API-first digital payments platform PayPhi became the first certified tokenisation service for NPCI Tokenisation System (NTS) that supports the tokenisation of RuPay cards.
  • The Reserve Bank of India has issued a set of guidelines to store sensitive customer information in the form of encrypted ‘token’ to enhance security.
  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced the launch of NTS to support tokenisation of cards as an alternative to storing card details with merchants to comply with the RBI guidelines.
  • NPCI’s NTS platform enables PayPhi tokenisation service to provide partner merchants and aggregators with Token Reference on File (TROF).
  • TROF is a unique digital identifier that replaces the 16-digit RuPay card number.
  • TROF is held at the merchant/payment gateway end instead of the card number and will be utilised in all subsequent transactions, ensuring compliance with the RBI rules by eliminating card on file storage and reinforcing online transmission of customer credentials.

SEBI proposes ‘One Commodity One Exchange’ concept

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed the ‘One Commodity One Exchange’ concept in a bid to reduce fragmentation of liquidity.
  • This concept’s principal goal is to assist each exchange in building an exclusive set of unfragmented liquid contracts on certain commodities.
  • This concept should be applicable only for narrow agri-commodities and non-agri commodities should not fall under the purview.
  • The agricultural commodities have been classified into three categories — sensitive, broad and narrow.
  • This move will help commodity exchanges develop expertise in promoting trade in particular commodity derivatives rather than concentrating on too many products.

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was ranked at the 37th position on the Forbes rankings of 100 most powerful women of the world 2021.
  • She ranked 41 in 2020 and held the 34th spot in 2019 in the Forbes ranking of 100 most powerful women.
  • Mackenzie Scott earned the topmost spot in this year’s (2021) list.
  • US Vice-President Kamala Harris was ranked second and European Central Bank Head Christine Lagarde was at the third position in the top 100 rankings.

Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo bags the 57th Jnanpith Award for 2022

  • Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo bagged the 57th Jnanpith Award for 2022 for his outstanding contribution to literature.
  • Assamese poet and litterateur Nilmani Phookan bagged the 56th Jnanpith Award for 2021.
  • Damodar Mauzo won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Karmelin in 1983.
  • His famous books include Tsunami Simon and Teresa’s Man and Other Stories from Goa. Some of his works have been translated into French, English and Portuguese as well.
  • Damodar Mauzo is the second Konkani writer to receive this award after Ravindra Kelekar, who received the Jnanpith Award in 2006.

President Ram Nath Kovind presents the ‘President’s Standard’ Award to the Indian Navy’s 22nd Missile Vessels Squadron

  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented the President’s Standard Award to the 22nd Missile Vessels Squadron of the Indian Navy, the unit that had bombed and sank the Pakistan Navy’s vessels in the 1971 War, at a ceremony held in the naval dockyard in Visakhapatnam.
  • This year (2021) also marks the 50th anniversary of the Missile Vessels Squadron, also known as the ‘Killers’, which has retained the potential of delivering a credible offensive punch from the sea for the previous five decades.
  • The President’s Standard is the highest honour bestowed by the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces to a military unit in recognition of the service rendered to the nation.

India successfully test-fires air version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

  • India successfully test-fired the air version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the supersonic fighter aircraft Sukhoi 30 MK-I from Integrated Test Range of Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
  • BrahMos is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s Ministry of Defense (NPOM) for the development, production and marketing of a supersonic cruise missile.
  • BrahMos is a potent offensive missile weapon system already inducted into the Armed Forces.

India bags 41 medals at the fourth Asian Youth Para Games held in Bahrain

  • Indian para-athletes bagged 41 medals (12 gold, 15 silver and 14 bronze medals) for India at the fourth Asian Youth Para Games held in Manama, Bahrain.
  • India won most medals in athletics, with 22 players finishing at the podium with eight won gold, six silver and eight bronze medals.
  • The Indian para-shuttlers claimed 15 medals, with Palak Kohli, Sanjana Kumari and Hardik Makkar claiming three medals each.
  • The third edition of the Asian Youth Para Games was held in Dubai, UAE, in 2017.

India’s Jhilli Dalabehera bags the silver medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021

  • Indian weightlifter Jhilli Dalabehera won the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • Sanket Mahadev Sargar won the gold medal in the men’s 55 kg snatch category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 in Tashkent.

 


Russia lifts the Davis Cup 2021 title held in Madrid after beating Croatia

  • Russia lifted the Davis Cup 2021 title after Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev won their singles matches to defeat Croatia.
  • This is Russia’s third Davis Cup title and first since 2006.
  • Russia’s other Davis Cup title was in 2002. Croatia also was seeking its third title after triumphs in 2005 and 2018.

India’s Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat passed away

  • India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat passed away at the age of 63 after the Mi-17V5 helicopter that carried him crashed in Tamil Nadu.
  • He was India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, an office set up in 2019 to improve coordination between the army, navy and air forces of India.
  • Prior to taking over as the CDS, he served as 57th and last Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee as well as 26th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army.

Serum Institute of India’s Executive Director Dr. Suresh Jadhav passed away

  • The Executive Director of Serum Institute of India Suresh Jadhav passed away at the age of 72.
  • He was instrumental in the development of the Covishield vaccine.
  • He served on the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) board as a representative of the Serum Institute of India and was crucial in bridging the gap between national and international regulatory authorities.
