  • World Wetlands Day is celebrated globally on 02 February every year to raise global awareness about the significance of wetlands. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 02 February 1971.
  • This is the first year (2022) when World Wetlands Day will be observed as a United Nations international day.
  • The theme of World Wetlands Day for 2022 is ‘Wetlands Action for People and Nature’.

GAIL starts India’s first project of mixing hydrogen into the natural gas system

  • GAIL (India) Limited has commenced India’s first-ever project of mixing hydrogen into the natural gas system at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The hydrogen blended natural gas will be supplied to Avantika Gas Limited, one of GAIL’s joint ventures with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), for retailing of compressed natural gas (CNG) to automobiles and piped natural gas to households in Indore.

India and European Union hold second virtual maritime security dialogue virtually

  • India and the European Union (EU) held their second maritime security dialogue in a virtual format. This meeting was co-chaired by the Joint Secretary for Disarmament and International Security Affairs at the Union Ministry of External Affairs Sandeep Arya and Director for Security and Defence Policy at the European External Action Service Joanneke Balfoort.
  • The consultations in this dialogue included developments in the maritime security Environment and policy developments covering the EU strategy for cooperation in the Indo–Pacific.

Saudi Arabia’s first-ever Yoga festival was organised in Jeddah

  • Saudi Arabia has organised its first-ever Yoga Festival on Bay La Sun Beach near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
  • This festival was organised by the Saudi Yoga Committee (the new Saudi Yoga Federation), a body under the Saudi Arabia Olympic Committee. Nouf Marwari is the President of this committee, which was formed on 16 May 2021.

World’s first hydrogen-powered flying boat named ‘THE JET’ is set to be launched in Dubai

  • Swiss-based startup ‘THE JET Zero Emission’ has signed an agreement with UAE-based Zenith Marine Services LLC and US-based DWYN to manufacture and operate ‘The Jet’ — the first clean-energy, hydrogen-powered flying boat.
  • This luxurious boat has a capacity of 8–12 passengers and is equipped with two fuel cells and an air conditioner, as well as, other clean-tech, environmentally friendly technologies that help reduce carbon emissions.

  • Recently, Microsoft Corp. purchased Activision Blizzard Inc. for $ 69 billion.

Vedanta partners with the Union Bank of India to take over a majority of syndicated facility

  • Vedanta has tied up a facility of ₹ 8,000 crores with the Union Bank of India at 75 per cent to take over a majority of the syndicated facility. In 2020, Vedanta Limited had tied up a syndicated facility of
    ₹ 10,000 crores with the State Bank of India (SBI) as the lead bank at a running cost of 10.5 per cent.

Jammu & Kashmir has topped in the attacks on journalists in 2021

  • Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura topped the list of states and union territories in India where journalists and media houses were targeted in 2021, according to the India Press Freedom Report 2021 released by the Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG).
  • At least six journalists were killed, 108 were attacked and 13 media houses or newspapers were targeted across India.

  • Senior advocate and Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Rupinder Singh Suri passed away. He was appointed the ASG in June 2020.
  • He was designated as a senior advocate in 2009 and also served as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association.
