National Productivity Day (India) – 12 February
- National Productivity Day (India) is observed on 12 February to encourage the implementation of productivity tools and techniques with contemporary, relevant themes.
- This day is a part of the National Productivity Week, which is observed from 12 February to 18 February by the National Productivity Council (NPC).
- The NPC was formed in 1958 as an autonomous body under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade in the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- The theme of the National Productivity Week for 2022 is ‘Self-reliance through productivity’.

Union Government is set to launch the SMILE scheme for the welfare of marginalised individuals
- The Union Government is set to launch the Central Sector Scheme (CSS) named Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise (SMILE) in New Delhi.
- This scheme is intended to provide assistance to the transgender community and people engaged in the act of begging.
- The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has allocated ₹ 365 crores for this scheme for the period 2021–22 to 2025–26.
- It is divided into two sub- schemes — the Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for the Welfare of Transgender Persons and the Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Persons Involved in Begging.
- Under the Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Welfare of Transgender Persons scheme, there is a provision in this scheme to grant scholarships to transgender pupils. There is also a provision for the establishment of a Transgender Protection Cell to ensure that transgressions are promptly registered, investigated and prosecuted.
- The implementing agencies will conduct a survey and identify beneficiaries under the Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Persons Engaged in the Act of Begging scheme.
Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog and UNDP India launches the Community Innovator Fellowship
- The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and NITI Aayog, have collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India to launch the Community Innovator Fellowship (CIF).
- This initiative will provide the young people with a chance to start their own social venture that focuses on sustainable development goals (SDGs) based solutions for community problems.
- This is going to be a one-year-long intensive fellowship programme, which has been designed for aspiring community innovators irrespective of their socio-economic background.
- The CIF programme would primarily focus on assisting the knowledge and capacity building of prospective community innovators, which is critical to their entrepreneurial path. This is one of the ways that the Atal Innovation Mission plans to engage young people in the mainstreaming of social enterprise as a culture in the Indian startup ecosystem.

India agrees to help Sri Lanka to implement a ‘Unitary Digital Identity Framework’
- India has agreed to provide Sri Lanka a grant to help them develop a ‘Unitary Digital Identity Framework,’ which appears to be modelled after the Aadhaar card.
- It is expected that this proposed Unitary Digital Identity Framework will introduce a biometric-based personal identity verification device, a digital tool that can represent individual identities in cyberspace and the identification of individual identities that can be accurately verified in both digital and physical environments by combining the two devices.

Tata Sons reappoints N. Chandrasekaran as its Chairman for another five years
- Natarajan Chandrasekaran was as the Chairman of Tata Sons for another five years.
- He joined the board of Tata Sons in October 2016 and was appointed its Chairman in January 2017.
- He also served on the boards of several of the Tata Group’s operating firms, including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), where he served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from 2009 to 2017.

- Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
- He became the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court after Justice Sanjib Banerjee was transferred to the Meghalaya High Court in November 2021.

India ranks 46th in the Economic Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2021
- India ranked 46th in the Economic Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index 2021 with a score of 6.91.
- Norway topped the Democracy Index 2021 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit with a score of 9.75.
- Afghanistan has surpassed North Korea as the least democratic country with a score of 0.32.
- This report is based on five findings — electoral process and pluralism, functioning of the government, political participation, political culture and civil liberties.
- The top five countries in the Democracy Index 2021 are Norway, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden and Iceland, whereas the lowest five countries are the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, North Korea, Myanmar and Afghanistan.
Paytm has the highest penetration in digital payments: Comscore report
- Paytm topped the list of firms with the highest penetration in digital payments with over 45 per cent penetration in fintech, according to the report released by Comscore.
- Paytm was followed by Google Pay at 43 per cent penetration (reach as percentage of the total digital population).
- Paytm maintained a steady increase in the number of users on its platform while also maintaining higher levels of customer retention and engagement.

India wins the third One-Day International defeating the West Indies
- Indian men’s cricket team won the third One-Day International match against the West Indies team held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
- Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant staged India’s recovery by scoring 80 and 56 runs, respectively. Fast bowler Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies, who took four wickets for 34 runs in eight overs.

French scientist Luc Montagnier passed away at 89
- Luc Montagnier, a Nobel Prize winner and French virologist whose co-discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus triggered a worldwide search for an AIDS treatment, passed away at the age of 89.
- He is the scientist from the Pasteur Institute in Paris who shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Germany’s Harald zur Hausen, whose work on the viral causes of cervical cancer was recognised in 2008.
