NATIONAL

IAF successfully test fires air-to-air Astra missile

The Indian Air Force has successfully test fired the indigenously developed beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) ‘Astra’ from a Su-30 aircraft.

Astra has undergone more than 20 developmental trials. The missile was tested at the Kalaikunda Air Force Station.

The missile successfully engaged a maneuvering target with high precision. It targeted an unmanned aerial vehicle ‘Banshi’ which it successfully engaged.

Cabinet approves National Digital Communication Policy

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has  approved the National Digital Communications Policy-2018 (NDCP-2018) and re-designation of the Telecom Commission as the “Digital Communications Commission”.

The new National Digital Communications Policy – 2018 has been formulated, in place of the existing National Telecom Policy-2012, to cater to the modern needs of the digital communications sector of India.

NDCP-2018 shall lead to new ideas and innovations, after the launch of advanced technology such as 5G, IOT, M2M, etc. which shall govern the telecom sector of India.


India, Morocco sign MoU to enhance cooperation in MSME Sector

India and Morocco has signed an MoU for deepening cooperation between MSME sectors of the two countries in Rabat, Morocco.

The MoU was signed by CMD, National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC), Ravindra Nath and Director General, Maroc PME, Mr. Rabri Barrazouka.

Through this MOU, the NSIC and Maroc PME will work together to enhance cooperation opportunities for MSMEs of both countries. It will facilitate transfer of Indian technologies and products to Morocco.

Vice president M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated Smart City Expo India-2018

Vice president M. Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated Smart City Expo India-2018 in Jaipur.

The objective of this three days long expo is to have discussions among different experts and groups to utilize benefits of new technology, town planning, capacity management, challenges before socio-economic development and development of networking in the Smart City sector.


Government launches Financial Inclusion Index

The Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley launched the Financial Inclusion Index after his Annual Performance Review Meeting with CEOs of the Public Sector Banks in New Delhi.

The single composite index gives a snap shot of level of financial inclusion that would guide Macro Policy perspective. The various components of the index will also help to measure financial services for use of internal policy making.

Financial Inclusion Index can be used directly as a composite measure in development indicators.


Parakram Parv begins to showcase the courage, valour and sacrifice of Indian Armed Forces

The Parakram Parv will be celebrated from september 28-30 to showcase the courage, valour and sacrifice of Indian Armed Forces.  

This event is to mark the second anniversary of the surgical strikes against terror camps across the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Armed forces conducted surgical strikes in 2016 (on the intervening night of September 28-29, 2016)  which had strategic ramifications and were aimed at dissuading the inimical adversary from adopting the path of violence and to ensure an environment of peace for the nation.

The term Line of Control refers to the military control line between the Indian and Pakistan.

The main event is planned at India Gate Lawns, Rajpath in  New Delhi. Similarly, 53 locations in 51 cities across the country will be showcasing the events highlighting valour of Indian Armed Forces in general and Special Forces in particular.


Amit Shah to inaugurate Deendayal Upadhyaya National monument

BJP president Amit Shah will inaugurate the Deendayal Upadhyaya National monument at Dhankya, Rajasthan to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of BJP ideologue.

The monument was built at a cost of Rs 12 crore, is spread across 4,400 sq metre area and was acquired from the North Western Railways. Shah will also unveil the 15 feet statue of Upadhyaya.

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay was an RSS thinker and co-founder of the political party Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of Bharatiya Janata Party.


India International Science Festival 2018

The President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the fourth “India International Science Festival (IISF)” on October 6.

IISF 2018 is being organized by Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences in association with Vijnana Bharati or VIBHA, an RSS-linked science organisation at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Lucknow.

The fourth edition of the festival is also a tribute to former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee who brought Science to the national stage.

The IISF-2018 with its focal theme of ‘Science for Transformation’ will have 23 special events.


INTERNATIONAL

First Assembly of International Solar Alliance (ISA)

The inauguration of the first General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance [ISA] will take place on 2 October 2018 in Delhi. The Ministerial level Assembly will be held in Greater Noida on October 3, 2018.

The ISA is a major initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in contributing to the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement through rapid and massive deployment of solar energy.

The ISA was launched at 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC CoP21) on 30 November 2015 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, HE Narendra Modi and then-French President, HE Francois Hollande.


First-ever women-only foreign minister conference held in Montreal

The Women foreign ministers from around the world have kicked off a two-day conference in Montreal, Canada, that is aimed at highlighting women’s key role in politics and decision-making processes.

The meeting is being co-chaired by Canada’s top diplomat, Chrystia Freeland, and the foreign affairs representative of the EU, Federica Mogherini.

It focused on topics such as conflict prevention, democratic growth and eliminating gender-based violence.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

RBI eases cash reserve rules to ease liquidity

The Reserve Bank of India has announced that banks can avail of higher liquidity with effect from October 1.

Banks could ‘carve out’ up to 15 percent of holdings under the statutory liquidity reserves to meet their liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) requirements as compared to 13 percent now.

RBI has enhanced the “Facility to Avail Liquidity for Liquidity Coverage Ratio (FALLCR)” from the existing 11 percent to 13 percent of their deposits.

Banks’ SLR, which is the percentage of deposits that they have to mandatorily invest in government and state government securities, is currently at 19.5 per cent.

PM Modi gets UN’s highest environmental honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded with the UN’s highest environmental honour, also given to five other individuals and organisations.

It has been given for his leadership of the International Solar Alliance and pledge to eliminate single use plastic by 2022.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Mr. Modi have been jointly recognised in the Policy Leadership category for their pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance.

Cochin International Airport was honoured with the award for Entrepreneurial Vision, for its leadership in the use of sustainable energy.  The airport at Cochin is world’s first fully solar powered airport.

The other winners of the 2018 Champions of the Earth Awards are Joan Carling, recognised with the lifetime achievement award for her work as one of the world’s most prominent defenders of environmental and indigenous rights.

China’s Zhejiang’s Green Rural Revival Programme is awarded for Inspiration and Action for the transformation of a once heavily polluted area of rivers and streams in East China’s Zhejiang province.


Evan Atar Adaha receives UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award

Evan Atar Adaha, surgeon and medical director at a hospital in north-eastern South Sudan, is the 2018 winner of the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award.

The award is in recognition of Dr. Atar’s outstanding commitment and self-sacrifice in providing medical services to more than 200,000 people, including approximately 144,000 refugees from Sudan’s Blue Nile state.

His team carries out an average of 58 operations per week in difficult conditions at the hospital in Bunj, Maban County, with limited supplies and equipment.

Manpreet Singh replaces PR Sreejesh as captain for Asian Champions Trophy

India midfielder Manpreet Singh will take over the captaincy from PR Sreejesh in the Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat.

India will go into the tournament as the defending champions after they won the 2016 edition when they beat Pakistan 3-2 in the final in Kauntan, Malaysia.

Chinglensana Singh has been named Manpreet’s deputy.

Skipper Manpreet, the recipient of this year’s Arjuna Award, will be responsible of commanding the midfield along with the experienced Chinglensana.
