World Radio Day – 13 February

  • World Radio Day is observed on 13 February to honour the oldest and most commonly used mode of communication, as well as a variety of platforms for democratic debate.
  • This day was first declared as an international day by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2012.
  • The theme for World Radio Day 2022 is ‘Radio and trust’.

Sarojini Naidu’s Birth Anniversary – 13 February

  • Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879. This year (2022) marks the one hundred and forty-third (143rd) birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu.
  • She was the first Indian woman to be the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925.
  • Her first book of poems ‘The Golden Threshold’ was released in 1905.
  • She was popularly known as the ’Nightingale of India’.

International Epilepsy Day – 14 February

  • The International Epilepsy Day is observed on the second Monday in February, which falls on 14 February this year (2022) to raise awareness on epilepsy.
  • This day is a joint initiative created by the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), which started observing this day since 2015.
  • The theme of International Epilepsy Day 2022 is ’50 million steps for epilepsy’.

FICCI CASCADE takes initiatives to launch the Anti-Smuggling Day 2022 on 11 February

  • The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)’s Committee Against Smuggling and Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy (CASCADE) has taken some initiatives to launch the Anti-Smuggling Day 2022 on 11 February.
  • Anti-Smuggling Day was established with the goal of improving law enforcement coordination and collaboration, promoting a greater exchange of information and experiences and developing a strong network to find new solutions to battle the smuggling threat.

  • The Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) celebrated its seventeenth foundation day programme on 11 February 2022, where the Union Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman has launched the first colour souvenir coin on ‘Panchtantra’.
  • She stressed the importance of improving product quality and positioning SPMCIL as a leader in the production of currency and other sovereign products during this event.

  • The Jaisalmer Desert Festival 2022 is an annual event that began on 13 February in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
  • The world-famous Jaisalmer Desert Festival is also known as Maru Mahotsav of the Golden City.
  • This four-day event from 13 February 2022 to 16 February 2022 began with a colourful grand procession, followed by competitions for Miss Pokhran and Mister Pokhran.

Israel becomes the first country to permit unmanned aerial vehicles to fly in civilian airspace

  • Israel became the first-ever country to allow drones to fly in civilian airspace.
  • Israel’s Ministry of Transport and Road Safety announced Israel’s first certification of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for civilian airspace operations.
  • Elbit’s StarLiner drone is a modified version of its Hermes 900 drone, which is used by militaries around the world. It was modified to meet civil aviation requirements by adding sensors to identify other aircraft and avoid collisions with them, an additional warning system to prevent it from approaching or crashing into the ground, autonomous takeoff and landing systems in low-visibility conditions and other changes.

Yes Bank launches Agri Infinity programme to develop financial solutions for the food and agriculture ecosystem

  • Yes Bank has launched an annual startup enablement programme named ‘Yes Bank Agri Infinity’, which is aimed at co-developing digital finance solutions for the food and agriculture ecosystem by mentoring entrepreneurial ventures in the industry.
  • The early and growth-stage entrepreneurs interested in investigating tech-enabled financial innovations in the agri domain are invited to apply with their proposals as part of this agri-fintech enabler programme.
  • This programme will last up to six months, based on the maturity and readiness of the solution.

Reliance Jio ties up with Luxembourg-based satellite solutions provider SES to deliver broadband services through satellite technology

  • Reliance Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) and Luxembourg-based satellite solutions provider SES have tied up to form a new initiative of a joint venture named Jio Space Technology Limited to develop satellite-based broadband technology in India with up to 100 Gbps speed.
  • This joint venture aims to leverage satellite technology to create next-generation scalable and inexpensive internet services in India.
  • Jio and SES will own 51 per cent and 49 per cent each in the equity stake.
  • This technology will use multi-orbit space networks — a combination of geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations capable of supplying multi-gigabit connectivity and capacity to businesses.

Union Government plans to sell a 5 per cent LIC stake in India’s biggest-ever IPO

  • The Union Government has planned to generate nearly ₹ 75,000 crores by selling a 5 per cent stake in the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in India’s largest-ever initial public offering (IPO), which is expected to test investor appetite in a volatile market.
  • The Indian Government would sell 316.25 million shares through an offer for sale (OFS), according to draft IPO paperwork filed with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
  • The LIC IPO documents were ranked fifth globally in terms of life insurance gross written premium and tenth worldwide in terms of total assets.
  • The Union Government has appointed 10 merchant bankers, including Goldman Sachs (India) Securities Private Limited, Citigroup Global Markets India Private Limited and Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities (India) Private Limited, to manage the mega IPO of India’s largest insurer.

Mumbai ranks as the fifth congested city in the world in 2021 according to Tom Tom Traffic Index

  • Mumbai and Bengaluru have emerged as the world’s fifth and tenth most congested cities in 2021, according to Tom Tom’s Traffic Index global top 25 list.
  • Istanbul in Turkey topped this list followed by Moscow in Russia and Kyiv in Ukraine.
  • Mumbai was ranked as the second-most congested city in the world in 2020.
  • Delhi and Pune ranked eleventh and among 404 cities across 58 countries, according to TomTom Traffic Index’s global top 25 list.

  • India’s leading industrialist and Chairman of Bajaj Auto Limited Rahul Bajaj passed away at the age of 83.
  • He was widely regarded as the man who put India on two wheels.
  • He was awarded India’s third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan in 2001.
  • He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2006 and remained a Rajyasabha member till 2010.
  • He was also a former chairman of the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council and a member of Harvard Business School’s South Asia advisory council.
