Smart Cities Mission launches the Smart Cities and Academia Towards Action & Research (SAAR) programme

  • Smart Cities Mission has launched the Smart cities and Academia Towards Action & Research (SAAR) It is a joint initiative of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the National Institute of Urban Affairs and leading Indian academic institutions of India.
  • Under this programme, 15 premier architecture and planning institutes of India will be working with Smart Cities to document landmark projects undertaken by the Smart Cities Mission.
  • It will provide opportunities to students for engagement on urban development projects and enable real-time information flow between urban practitioners and academia.
  • The Smart Cities Mission was launched in 2015 under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Gujarat Chief Minister inaugurates the second edition of the Student Start-ups and Innovation Policy

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel kicked off a two-day international academic conference as a warm-up for the Tenth Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, which will take place from 10–12 January.
  • He also launched the Student Start-ups and Innovation Policy (SSIP) 2.0, which is aimed at financially supporting school students in innovation.
  • This new policy aims to establish an innovation and incubation centre in each of the 90-odd universities in Gujarat.
  • Other objectives of this policy include providing financial assistance to school and college students to build prototypes and proof-of-consents, financial assistance for filing at least 1000 intellectual properties and building a pre-incubation support system in 500 institutions and universities.

Himachal Pradesh becomes India’s first LPG-enabled and smoke-free state

  • Himachal Pradesh became the first LPG-enabled and smoke-free state in India due to the Ujjwala scheme of the Union Government and Grihini Suvidha Yojana of the Himachal Pradesh Government.
  • Mukhya Mantri Grihini Suvidha Yojana was launched on 26 May 2018. The objective of launching this scheme was to provide free gas connections to those families who were not covered under the Union Government’s Ujjwala scheme.

Antigua and Barbuda joins the International Solar Alliance as the 102nd country

  • Antigua and Barbuda became the 102nd country to join International Solar Alliance (ISA).
  • Antigua and Barbuda joined the International Solar Framework in the presence of the Indian High Commissioner to Guyana Dr. K. J. Srinivasa.
  • The United States of America (USA) became the 101st member country to join the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

Union Bank of India offers alternative reference rates-based loans replacing LIBOR

  • The Union Bank of India (UBI) has changed its systems and processes to accommodate the transition from London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) to Alternative Reference Rates (ARRs).
  • The bank is offering ARR-based trade finance loans, bilateral, syndication, export credit, foreign currency and multiple banking loans.

RBI notifies market-making plan to promote retail participation in government securities

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) notified the Market-making scheme to promote retail participation in government securities by providing prices/quotes to retail direct gilt (RDG) account holders enabling them to buy and sell securities under the RBI Retail Direct Scheme.
  • The RBI Retail Direct Scheme was launched on 12 November 2021 to provide one-stop access to facilitate investment in government securities by retail investors.
  • According to the market-making scheme, primary dealers will rely on the Know Your Customer (KYC) verification of the RDG account holders done under the Retail Direct Scheme.
  • Under the RBI Retail Direct Scheme, retail investors (individuals) have the facility to open an online Retail Direct Gilt Account (RDG Account) with the RBI. These accounts can be linked to their savings bank accounts.

GAIL India acquires a 26% stake in ONGC Tripura Power Company

  • GAIL India has acquired an equity stake of 26% in ONGC Tripura Power Company (OTPC), which owns and operates a 726.6 MW gas-based combined cycle power plant in Palatana, Tripura.
  • This stake has been acquired from IL&FS Group Companies, namely IL&FS Energy Development Company and IL&FS Financial Services.
  • Apart from the 26% equity acquired by GAIL from IL&FS Group, the rest of the equity is held by Oil and Natural Gas Company (50%), Government of Tripura (0.50%) and India Infrastructure Fund GIP II (23.50%).

  • Air New Zealand was ranked the safest airline in the world for 2022 by AirlineRatings.com, which monitors 385 carriers globally.
  • Air New Zealand was also the first in the world to mandate COVID-19 vaccination and testing requirements for all passengers on their domestic services, with the rule also being extended to their international services from 1 February.
  • Qantas was at the top position in the safest airlines in the world last year but slipped to the third position due to an incident at Perth Airport in 2018.

  • Zhang Ming took charge as the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for a three-year term.
  • He has succeeded the former Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov.
  • The SCO was established by the presidents of Russia, China, The Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan at a summit in Shanghai in 2001. India and Pakistan became permanent members of this group in 2017.

  • J. C. Chaudhry, one of India’s finest numerologists, set the first-ever Guinness world record in numerology and the first world record of 2022 by educating about 6,000 numerology aficionados from the United States, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and India about ancient science.

North Korea launches its second hypersonic missile

  • North Korea has successfully launched a second hypersonic missile as part of its efforts to modernise its strategic weapons systems to build powerful, sophisticated missiles rather than returning to disarmament talks.
  • Hypersonic weapons usually fly towards targets at lower altitudes than ballistic missiles and can achieve more than five times the speed of sound or about 6200 km/hr (3850 m/h).

Reliance Jio rolls out the UPI Autopay for both prepaid and postpaid users

  • Reliance Jio has become the first telecom major in the industry to roll out the UPI Autopay facility for both prepaid and postpaid users in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • Jio customers can now use the MyJio application to automatically for their tariff plans and use the touch-free auto-recharge and bill payment feature.
  • Jio users will no longer need to remember their recharge renewal date or bill payment date and perform manual payments. This will enable an always-on service experience for every Jio prepaid user.
  • Jio customers can now set standing instructions on the MyJio application using the UPI Autopay feature for their tariff plans and avail hassle-free mobile recharging experience.

Freedom fighter K. Ayyappan Pillai passed away

  • Freedom fighter and India’s oldest lawyer Ayyappan Pillai passed away at the age of 107.
  • He had actively participated in the Quit India Movement after a meeting with Gandhiji in 1934.
  • He worked along with Pattom Thanu Pillai, C. Kesavan and T. M. Varghese.
  • He had also served as a member of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Council.

Social worker and Padma Sri awardee Sindhutai Sapkal passed away

  • Social worker and Padma Shri awardee Sindhutai Sapkal, popularly known as ‘the mother of orphan children’ passed away at the age of 73.
  • She was popularly referred to as “Mai” and ran an orphanage in Pune where she adopted more than 1000 orphan children.
  • She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 and the Ahilyabai Holkar Award in 2010 from the Maharashtra Government for her contribution to society. 

Three-time Olympic triple jump champion Viktor Saneyev passed away

  • The three-time Olympic triple jump champion and former world record-holder Viktor Saneyev passed away at the age of 76.
  • He claimed the four Olympic medals he won out of which, three gold medals at consecutive games in 1968, 1972 and 1976 and one silver medal in 1980.
  • He also won at the 1969 European Championships and the 1974European Championships. He won the European Athletics Indoor Championships at 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1977.
