IIT Madras and NIOT jointly organised the ‘OCEANS 2022’ conference in Chennai, Tamil Nadu

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) jointly organised the ‘OCEANS 2022’ Conference and Exposition, the Bi-annual event for Global Marine Researchers, technologists and engineers, students and policymakers. The main theme of this conference is ‘Inspire-Innovate-Sustain’.
  • This conference is being organised first time in India and is being coordinated by the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras.

 

Union Cabinet approves FDI of up to 20 per cent in LIC of India under automatic route

  • The Union Cabinet has approved foreign direct investment (FDI) of up to 20 per cent under the automatic route in Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India, according to people aware of the development, paving for a smoother road ahead of its initial public offer (IPO).
  • This reform in the FDI policy will facilitate foreign investment in LIC and such other bodies corporate, for which the government may have a requirement for disinvestment purposes.

 

New Development Bank becomes the first multilateral agency to open an office in Gift City

  • New Development Bank (NDB) became the first multilateral agency to open an office in the Gujarat International Finance Tech City (Gift).
  • NDB will take all requisite steps to make the Indian office operational by the middle of May.

Chhattisgarh govt signs two MOUs for dung-based power plants and food irradiator facility

  • The Chhattisgarh government has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for the installation of a food irradiator plant, which will keep food and vegetables safe and well-preserved, as well as dung-based power plants.
  • Another MoU was signed between Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) and Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) for setting up of dung-based power plants in ‘gauthans’.

Canada approves World’s first plant-based COVID-19 Vaccine ‘Covifenz’

  • Canada approved the use of Covifenz, the world’s first plant-derived COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by Medicago Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline Plc.
  • This vaccine is for people 18 to 64 years of age. The approval of the plant-derived COVID-19 vaccine could help overcome vaccine hesitancy among many as countries are struggling to raise vaccination rates after a certain threshold.

RBI invites request for proposal to assess the impact of its financial literacy campaigns

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) proposed to assess the impact of the multi-media awareness campaigns launched to promote financial literacy and also safe banking practices.
  • RBI invited the request for proposal (RFP) from certain shortlisted entities, which would be required to undertake outcome and impact assessment of its multilingual, pan-India public awareness campaigns.
  • The RBI runs the ‘RBI Kehta Hai’ campaign to educate and empower the public about banking regulations and also to make them aware of good and safe banking practices.
  • It was a multi-media multi-lingual campaign using SMSes, print, television channels, radio, hoardings, websites and social media.

SECI signs an MoU with HPCL to fulfill the government’s ambitions of a carbon-neutral economy

  • Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to collaboratively work in the field of renewable energy, electric mobility and alternative fuels including the development of ESG Projects.
  • This is in line with the government’s vision of a carbon-neutral economy by 2070.

International Monsoons Project Office launched in IITM Pune

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh virtually launched the International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO) at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune on the occasion of National Science Day (28 February) 2022.
  • This IMPO is a step towards making India a global hub for monsoon research and coordination in a seamless manner for addressing common and region-specific aspects of the monsoons around the world.
  • IITM, Pune is an institution under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, initially for five years.

 

China’s Long March-8 rocket launches 22 satellites into space

  • China’s new Long March-8 rocket launched 22 satellites at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in southern Hainan. This mission marked a domestic record for the most spacecraft (409) launched by a single rocket.
  • These satellites will be mainly used for commercial remote sensing services, marine environment monitoring, forest fire prevention and disaster mitigation.

  • Former banker Madhabi Puri Buch was appointed as the new Chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the first-ever woman to head the capital markets regulator for three years.
  • Madhabi Puri Buch succeeded Ajay Tyagi, who served as a chairman for five years. She was not only the first woman whole-time member of SEBI but also the first person from the private sector working at the regulator.
