  • INS Rajput is the first destroyer of the Indian Navy, which was decommissioned after over 41 years of service. The lead ship of the Kashin-class destroyers built by the erstwhile USSR, the destroyer was commissioned on 4 May 1980.

China successfully launches a new ocean observation satellite named “Haiyang-2D”

  • China successfully launched “Haiyang-2D”, a new ocean-monitoring satellite, into orbit. The satellite was launched by a Long March-4B rocket carrying the Haiyang-2D (HY-2D) satellite from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China.

  • A Punjab-based firm, AgNext Technologies, has come up with a system based on digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) that combines hardware, software and algorithms to test agricultural products for quality.

Chennai Petroleum Corporation appoints Arvind Kumar as its Managing Director

  • The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has picked Arvind Kumar as the Managing Director of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, a unit of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. He is currently an executive director at Indian Oil Corporation.
  • Chennai Petroleum Corporation is one of the largest refineries in South India, with an installed refining capacity of 5 million tonnes (mt).

Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman win 2020 Millennium Technology Prize

  • Cambridge University chemists Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman were declared the winners of the 2020 Millennium Technology Prize for their development of revolutionary sequencing techniques, which means DNA can now be read in super-fast times.
  • The prize was awarded by Technology Academy Finland (TAF) at two-year intervals since
  • They co-invented the Solexa-Illumina Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) technology enabling fast, accurate, low-cost and large-scale genome sequencing.

Tashi Yangjom becomes first Indian woman climber to scale the Mount Everest in 2021

  • Arunachal Pradesh mountaineer Tashi Yangjom became the first Indian woman climber to scale the Mount Everest (8,849 metres) in 2021. She began the climb on 9 May and completed her journey on 11 May. She was trained at the National Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh.

  • Karnataka was ranked first in establishing health and wellness centres (HWCs) under the Ayushman Bharat program for 2020–2021 to provide comprehensive primary health care in rural areas.

  • Ayushman Bharat Yojana aims to help economically vulnerable Indians who are in need of healthcare facilities. It was launched in September 2018 by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Bernard Arnault becomes the world’s 2nd richest person in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index 2021

  • As per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Chairman and CEO of luxury goods company LVMH, Bernard Arnault, displaced Tesla and SpaceX’s CEO Elon Musk to rise to the second position in the list of world’s richest person. Elon Musk moved down one spot to third position in the list of the world’s richest persons. Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world.

Former NSG chief Jayanta Kumar Dutt passed away at 72

  • Former Director-General of the National Security Guards (NSG) Jayanta Kumar Dutt, who headed the force during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, passed away due to COVID-19 related complications.
  • He is a 1971 batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre who served the force from August 2006 to February 2009.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Jagannath Pahadia passed away at 89

  • Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Jagannath Pahadia passed away at the age of 89. He was the Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 1980–81 and also a former Governor of Haryana and Bihar.

  • Indian rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the men’s lightweight double sculls event after finishing second in the final race of the Asia/Oceania Continental Qualifying Regatta in Tokyo. Another Indian, Jakar Khan, finished fourth in the men’s singles sculls final.

Germany’s World Cup winning midfielder Sami Khedira announces retirement

  • Germany’s World Cup-winning midfielder Sami Khedira announced his retirement after the final match of the Bundesliga season against Hoffenheim.
  • He played 77 games for Germany, scoring seven goals and helped them win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
