Home Minister commissions anti-Naxal ‘Bastariya’ battalion
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh attends the commissioning of ‘Bastariya’ battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF). It has been created for the first-time with more than 534 tribal youths from Chhattisgarh.
The battalion is named ‘Bastariya’ as its members are from the Bastar region in southern Chhattisgarh, bordering Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana.
The 534 troops will get their ranks of constables and take up arms against the naxals.
The CRPF is the lead anti-naxal operation force and has deployed over 35,000 personnel in Chhattisgarh.

India Successfully Test-Fires BrahMos Missile
India has successfully test-fired the Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a test range along the Odisha coast to validate some new features.
The missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher stationed at Launch pad 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
According to a report, BrahMos, the fastest cruise missile in the world co-developed by India and Russia, will become a ‘hypersonic’ system in the next decade. The missile, which currently travels at mach 2.8 or 2.8 times the speed of sound, would touch mach 3.5 soon and mach 5 in three years.
Tamil Nadu to Build India’s Next Generation Defence Aircraft
The Aeronautical Development Agency, which had conceived and designed the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, has planned to build the next generation defence aircraft, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The project would be implemented in Sulur in Coimbatore district which may house the permanent base of the Tejas squadron and it marks Tamil Nadu’s first major defence aircraft project.

“AYUSH” is now officially a scientific word in India
The Commission for Scientific & Technical Terminology (CSTT), the national body in charge of finding and recognising scientific and technical words, has decided to adopt the word ‘AYUSH’ in Hindi and English languages. The new recognition is to give the word more popularity.
The recognition of AYUSH — the acronym for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. Now, the commision has given the word’s meaning as a “traditional and Non-Conventional Systems of Health Care and Healing which include Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, Homoeopathy etc”.
This decision will also give a boost to India’s efforts to find a place for the Indian Systems of Healthcare in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) of the World Health Organization.
Nipah Virus Outbreak in Kerala
Nipah virus has been started to spread in North Kerala. It has high fatality rate and spreads mainly through bats, pigs and other animals.
The high-level team from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been asked to assist the Kerala government and closely monitor the situation.
The WHO says Nipah virus (NiV) encephalitis is an emerging infectious disease of public health importance in the South-East Asia Region. Nipah virus origin is Malaysia.

71st World Health Assembly Held in Geneva, Switzerland
The 71st World Health Assembly was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The World Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body for WHO.
The Event was held under the theme “Health for All: Commit To Universal Health Coverage”.
The Indian Delegation was led by Union Health Minister of India, Mr J P Nadda at World Health Assembly. Mr Nadda also inaugurated ‘Walk the Talk’ event and gave a call ‘Health for all, Yoga for all’.

China launches relay satellite to explore Moon’s far side
China has launched a relay satellite as part of a groundbreaking programme to be the first to land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon later this year.
China hopes to become the first country to soft-land a probe on the moon’s far side, also known as the dark side because it faces away from the earth and is comparatively. unknown. The satellite, named Queqiao, or “Magpie Bridge,” after an ancient Chinese folk tale, was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

BASIC Ministerial Meeting of Environment Ministers held in South Africa
The 26th BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change, held in Durban, South Africa.
The meeting, which was chaired by Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa(South Africa), called for co-operation from countries and stakeholders in an effort to protect the climate for present and future The generations.
Ministers expressed their determination to complete the Paris Agreement Work Programme at COP24, to enable full implementation of the Paris Agreement from 2020 onwards.
They said they will strengthen bilateral co-operation among BASIC countries. This includes exchanges on domestic policies and best practices on addressing climate change.

Ministry of Railway & Rail Vikas Nigam Limited Sign MoU
The Annual Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Ministry of Railway & Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) regarding financial & non financial targets for the company. The target for revenue from operations for RVNL has been set of Rs 7600 Cr for the FY 2018-19.
Shri Ranjanesh Sahai, Secretary, Railway Board & Shri S.C. Agnihotri, Chairman & Managing Director, RVNL signed the MoU in Rail Bhavan.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro re-elected
Socialist President Nicolas Maduro has won another six years in power in crisis-hit Venezuela.
The oil prices crashed the economy in 2016 and it has since completely collapsed. The country now finds itself in the middle of a financial crisis, and the International Monetary Fund expects inflation in Venezuela to reach 13,000% in 2018.

Anil Kumar Jha Appointed CMD of Coal India
Anil Kumar Jha has been appointed as the chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of Coal India Limited.
Jha, at present the CMD of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, has been appointed to the post till his superannuation.
CIL is a state-owned coal mining company headquartered in Kolkata.
IIT Kanpur sets up the India’s first advisory Centre for Energy Regulation
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) has set up first of its kind Centre for Energy Regulation (CER) in the country to strengthen policy and regulatory limitations in energy and power sector.
PK Pujari, chairperson, CERC unveiled the centre’s logo and its web portal at the launch ceremony held in New Delhi. The centre was set up with assistance of the UK Government.
It would adopt innovative approach to engage with stakeholders in the power sector, especially the electricity regulatory commissions, electric utilities and the academia. The centre would also develop a regulatory database to enable stakeholders in taking more informed decisions.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the European Golden Shoe for the fifth time.
He claimed the prize after scoring 34 goals in La Liga this season. He also won the award last year, as well as in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Four-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo finished ninth in the rankings after scoring 26 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran Won T.K. Ramanathan award
Prajnesh Gunneswaran won the prestigious T.K. Ramanathan award for the year 2017-18 at the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) annual day function at the SDAT tennis stadium.
He received a cash prize of Rs. 30,000. TNTA president M.A. Alagappan gave away the prizes.
