PM Leaves On 3-Nation Tour To Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-nation tour of Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, three countries in ASEAN, are strategic Partners of India.

In Singapore, Modi will deliver the key-note address at the 17th Shangri-la Dialogue.Modi and Malaysia PM Dr Mahathir Mohammad are expected to deliberate on ways to deepen bilateral relationship in a range of areas, including trade and investment.

The visit assumes significance on the backdrop of an increasing Chinese influence in the region and the importance attached to ASEAN by India under its Act East policy.


Sangeeta Bahl Becomes Oldest Indian woman to Scale Mount Everest

Sangeeta Bahl, a 53-year-old former model and entrepreneur from Jammu and Kashmir, has become the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest.

Bahl, who currently resides in Gurugram, was felicitated at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu. She scaled the peak on May 19 with the help of two Sherpas. Her husband Ankur Bahl, had also climbed Mt Everest in 2016.

Sangeeta Bahl has already conquered six out of the seven highest peaks of the world. She broke the record of Premlata Agarwal, 48, who scaled Everest on May 20, 2011.


4th Int’l Yoga Day celebrations to be held at Dehradun

The main  event of 4th International Yoga Day celebrations (IDY-2018)  will be held on 21st June 2018 at Dehradun in Uttrakhand.

It was announced by Shri Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha,  Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH.

The first International Day of Yoga was observed all over the world on 21 June 2015.

Hamburg To Host 2018 Global Wind Summit

The first edition of the Global Wind Summit will be held here from September 25-28, 2018 in Hamburg, Germany.

The conference on wind is the largest and most important meeting of the wind industry worldwide. The event combines two conferences, WindEnergy Hamburg and WindEurope.

India is fourth largest country — after China, the US and Germany — in terms of wind energy installation capacity at around 33 GW. The organisers of the four-day event are expecting speakers from about 100 countries, including India, China, the US, Spain and Denmark.

The focus of the conferences would be on three major subjects. Dynamic markets, cost efficiency and smart energy.


Pakistan Names Former Chief Justice As Caretaker PM

The Pakistani government and opposition named former chief justice Nasir-ul-Mulk the country’s caretaker prime minister.

Mulk had served as chief justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court for just over a year in 2014.

Mulk, who also served as interim chief of the Election Commission, will head a technocratic government until elections as the current government and Parliament will be dissolved.

The appointment was announced by parliamentary leader of the opposition Khursheed Shah at a press conference in the capital, Islamabad.

A caretaker government is a government that rules on a temporary basis, due to the loss of election or a pending transition of power.

Colombia to be NATO’s 1st Latin American ‘Global Partner’

Colombia will next week formally join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, making it the only Latin American nation in the alliance. It was announced by Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos.

Other global partners include Afghanistan, Australia, Iraq, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand and Pakistan.

The partnership with Colombia will cooperate on global security areas like cyber and maritime security, terrorism and links to organized crime.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance between 29 North American and European countries.

APPOINTMENTS

Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve wins National Biodiversity Award

An NGO from West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh has bagged the first prize from the National Bio-diversity Authority (NBA) for its efforts in conserving rare wildlife resources in the area. The NBA, established by the Centre in 2003, honoured the Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve (SBVCR) with a citation, a memento and a cash prize of Rs one lakh during a function in Hyderabad.

The SBVCR has been partnering with the state forest department since 2016 in protecting and conserving the 17 sq km area of Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve.

The sanctuary is also known for the existence of Bugun Liocichla, a bird species presently found only in the park.


Sudha Balakrishnan is RBI’s first Chief Financial Officer

NSDL executive Sudha Balakrishnan has been appointed the first ever chief financial officer (CFO) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) effective May 15.

Ms. Balakrishnan, who has been appointed in the rank of an executive director, is tasked to oversee several portfolios including government and bank accounts, corporate strategy and budget and will have a three year term.

At the RBI, Balakrishnan will be in charge of the central bank’s balance sheet to ensure accounting policies and procedures comply with regulations.

Virat Kohli emerged as International Cricketer of Year at CEAT Cricket Ratings

India skipper Virat Kohli has emerged as the International Cricketer of the Year at the CEAT Cricket Ratings awards.

Among others, opener Shikhar Dhawan was presented the International Batsman of the Year Award, while New Zealand pace sensation Trent Boult won International Bowler of the Year Award.

Afghanistan leg spinner Rashid Khan was presented with the T20 Bowler of the Year Award.

New Zealand’s swashbuckling opening batsman Colin Munro won the T20 Batsman of the Year Award.


Daniel Ricciardo Wins Monaco Grand Prix 2018

Australian Formula One Red Bull racer Daniel Ricciardo clinched the victory in their 250th race in the Formula One at Monaco GP.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished second while Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was third. The event held at Monte Carlo, Monaco.


OBITUARY

Actor Geeta Kapoor passed away

Veteran actress Geeta Kapoor, who is known for her role in the cult classic ‘Pakeezah’ passed away.

Geeta got her fame for her role in the classic film “Pakeezah”, she acted in around 100 films, in supporting roles as well as prominent ones such as in Kamal Amrohi’s “Pakeezah” and “Razia Sultan”.
