Global Agriculture Leadership Summit 2018 held in New Delhi

The Global Agriculture Leadership Summit 2018 was opened in New Delhi.

The theme of the 2-day summit is, ‘Connecting Farmers to Market’. The summit was inaugurated by the Secretary Agriculture and Co-operation, Sanjay Agrawal.

The annual summit is providing policymakers, managers, scientists, experts and leading Indian firms with a chance to share experience and seek business opportunities.


PM Modi Launches ‘Main Nahi Hum’ Portal In New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the ‘Main Nahin Hum’ portal and mobile application.

He will also interact with IT and electronic manufacturing professionals across India via video-conference.

The portal, which works on the theme ‘Self4Society’, will enable IT professionals and organisations to bring together their efforts towards social causes on one platform.

The portal is expected to help catalyse greater collaboration towards the service of the weaker sections of society, especially by leveraging the benefits of technology.


Centre constitutes GoM to look into sexual harassment of women at workplace

The Centre has constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to examine the existing legal and institutional frameworks for dealing with matters of sexual harassment of women at the workplace.

The GoM will be headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi will be the members of the group.

Within three months of its constitution, the GoM will examine the existing provisions for the safety of women and recommend further measures.

The Women and Child Development Ministry has launched an Electronic Complaints Box “She Box” that enables women, irrespective of their work status, to raise their voice against sexual harassment at workplace.


INTERNATIONAL

India Signs $777 Million Deal For Israeli Missile Defence Systems

A leading state-run Israeli defence company has signed a USD 777 million contract with India for the supply of and missile defence systems for the Indian Navy.

India’s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will be the main manufacturer for the project.

The IAI will supply Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) Air and Missile Defense (AMD) systems, the marine version of the AMD system Barak 8, for seven ships of the Indian Navy.

The IAI is Israel’s largest aerospace and defence company. It develops, manufactures and supplies defence systems including anti-missile, aerial systems and intelligence and cybersecurity systems.


11th session of India and Czech Republic Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation held in Prague

The eleventh session of India – Czech Republic Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation (JCEC) was held at Prague.

The Indian delegation was led by Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution, C. R. Chaudhary. Miss Marta Nováková, Minister of Industry & Trade of Czech Republic led the Czech side.

Czechoslovakia is preparing a project called Czech Industrial Cluster (CIC) near Bengaluru. The CIC will comprise administrative and production units and will serve as a hub for Czech companies that intend to settle down in India.

China Successfully Tests ‘World’s Largest’ Cargo Drone

China has successfully tested the world’s largest unmanned transport drone which can carry a payload of 1.5 tonnes.

A large commercial drone Feihong-98 (FH-98) developed and modified by the China Academy of Aerospace Electronics Technology made a successful test flight at Baotou test site in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Feihong-98 (FH-98) is now the world’s largest unmanned transport aircraft, with a maximum payload of up to 1.5 tonnes. It was adapted from the prototype of the Shifei Y5B, a China-developed transport plane.


International Conference on Status and Protection of Coral Reefs held at Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep

The International Conference on Status and Protection of Coral Reefs (STAPCOR – 2018) was organized in Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep.  

The theme of the conference was “Reef for Life.”  Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the conference.

International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) has declared the year 2018 as International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2018), which aims to raise awareness about the threats to coral reefs and the associated ecosystem.

They are under threat from excess nutrients, rising temperatures, oceanic acidification, sunscreen use overuse, overfishing, and harmful land-use practices, including runoff and seeps.

RBI Lifts The Ban On Fino Payments Bank To Open New Accounts

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lifted its ban on adding new customers for Fino Payments Bank. The ban had been placed by the RBI in May because of non-compliance of operational guidelines, particularly certain accounts having deposits in excess of the allowed amount.

RBI’s operating guidelines for payments banks said the aggregate limit for customer in his/her bank account shall not exceed Rs 100,000.

Currently there are five payment banks operating in the country – Paytm, Airtel, Fino and Aditya Birla-Idea Payments Bank and India Post Payments Bank.

Benyamin author of ‘Jasmine Days’ bags India’s richest book prize

Benyamin, the author of ‘Jasmine Days’, translated from Malayalam into English by Shahnaz Habib, is the winner of the first edition of the Rs 25 lakh JCB Prize for Literature, India’s richest literary prize. ‘Jasmine Days’ is published by Juggernaut Books.

The book was first published in Malayalam in 2014 as Mullappoo Niramulla Pakalukal and then translated into English by Shahnaz Habib.


M.S. Swaminathan to be conferred World Agriculture Prize

The Agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan will receive the first World Agriculture Prize instituted by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) in New Delhi. It will carry a cash component of $1,00,000.

The prize will be presented by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu at Vigyan Bhawan at a special session, named Swaminathan Global Dialogue on Climate Change and Food Security organised by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture.

He has been hailed by the United Nations Environment Programme as ‘The Father of Economic Ecology’ owing to his commitment towards the ever-green revolution movement in agriculture.

Dwayne Bravo Retires From International Cricket

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 35-year-old, who last represented the West Indies in September 2016, played a grand total of 270 internationals (40 Tests, 164 ODIs, 66 T20Is) between 2004 and 2016 and played a starring role in each of their two World T20 triumphs in 2012 and 2016.

In T20 cricket, which he is most known for, he cracked 1142 runs at a strike-rate of 116.41 and took 52 wickets at an economy of 8.46.
