NATIONAL

Third India International Science Festival to be held in Chennai:

The third India International Science Festival will be held in Chennai next month. This was stated by the Minister for Environment and Forest and Science and Technology, Harsh Vardhan in New Delhi.

The festival is being organised by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Ministry of Science and Technology. Top scientists from the government are expected to participate in the four-day festival which will be held from October 13-16 at IIT-Chennai.

The event will be jointly inaugurated by science and technology ministers of Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Portugal.   


Dr Harsh Vardhan to inaugurate Global Wildlife Programme on Oct 2:

Environment Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan will inaugurate the Global Wildlife Programme on 2nd of October. India is hosting the programme jointly with World Bank and United Nations Development Programme to address illegal wildlife trade across 19 Asian and African countries.

 


Karnataka govt launches Vision-2025 project:

The Karnataka government launched Vision-2025 project aimed at evolving a draft policy for development of the state in next seven years by seeking the opinion of the public.

Under the project, the government would seek public opinion on how they want their dream state to be in the next seven years, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said.

Launching the website www.navakarnataka2025.in, the chief minister said, “This vision document will help us decide the manifesto of our party.

Hyderabad Airport Becomes First in India to Provide Wheelchair Lift:

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad has become the first airport to provide a wheelchair lift or vert-lift. The move comes as part of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd’s Accessible India Campaign for passengers with reduced mobility.

2nd India-Indonesia Biennial Trade Ministers’ Forum:

The 2nd Biennial Trade Ministers Forum (BTMF) meeting was held at New Delhi between delegations led by the Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, Shri Suresh Prabhu and the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Enggartiasto Lukita.

Both Ministers agreed for convening early meeting of the Working Group on Trade & Investment and the Working Group on Trade Facilitation & Remedies, to address the issues impeding trade and identifying means of facilitating trade and investment between India and Indonesia.

Govt extends deadline for selling pre GST packaged old stock by three months to Dec 31:

Government has extended the deadline to sell pre-GST goods by three months till 31st of December this year. Consumer Affairs and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said, on the packaged commodities, Industry can display revised MRP due to GST implementation using sticker, stamping and online printing up to the end of this year.


ICICI Bank launches ‘cashback’ home loans:

India’s largest private sector lender by consolidated assets, ICICI Bank announced a new home loan scheme that offers borrowers the benefit of 1% cashback on every EMI, for the entire tenure of the loan. The offer will be valid for home loans with a minimum tenure of 15 years and maximum tenure of 30 years.


Patanjali’s Acharya Balkrishna among Top 10 Richest Indians:

Patanjali Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Acharya Balkrishna has made it to the list of top 10 richest Indians riding high on the success of the Baba Ramdev-run Ayurveda FMCG brand. Balkrishna has ranked eighth in the Hurun India rich list 2017.

Business Tycoon, Mukesh Ambani, with a net worth of INR 257,900 crore is ranked first in the list for the sixth consecutive year.


APPOINTMENTS

President appoints governors for 5 states, Banwarilal Purohit named TN governor:

Former Union Minister Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the new Governor of Bihar while Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit will now be the new Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar, Prof Jagdish Mukhi will replace Mr. Purohit as the Governor of Assam.

Admiral (Retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi will be the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar in place of Prof. Mukhi.

President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Governors in five states and Lieutenant Governor in one Union Territories.

Brigadier (Retd) B D Mishra has been appointed as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh and former member of Bihar Legislative Council Ganga Prasad Governor of Meghalaya.


BHU appoints first woman chief proctor:

The BHU appointed its first woman chief proctor after her predecessor resigned taking moral responsibility for the recent violence on the campus.

The appointment was approved by Vice Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi following the resignation of O P Singh.

Royana Singh, an assistant professor at the Institute of Medical Science (Anatomy Department), has been appointed as the Chief Proctor,” a senior Banaras Hindu University (BHU) official said.

Mahtab Bamji to get living legend award

Mahtab Bamji, a noted scientist, has been selected to receive the Living Legend Award of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS).

In a communique, the IUNS said the award will be presented at its General Assembly to be held at the IUNS-ICN in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 18.

The IUNS Council presents Living Legend Awards to individual members of Adhering Bodies in good standing who are eighty (80) years or above, the communique from the Secretary General Catherine Geissler said.

Veteran actor Tom Alter dies at 67:

Veteran actor and theatre personality Tom Alter passed away at his residence in Mumbai. 67-year old Padma Shri awardee Alter was suffering from skin cancer.
