Boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht Qualifies for World Championships

Tashkent :  Indian boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualified for the World Championships in the 52 kilogram category after getting a walkover against Malaysia’s Salam Abdul Kasim at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Bisht was up against Malaysia’s Salam Abdul Kasim but got a walkover this morning.

Top six boxers from each weight category in the Asian event will qualify for the World Championships in Germany scheduled from August 25.

Bisht had lost in the quarterfinals of the ongoing event.

With Bisht, India now have five boxers confirmed for the World Championships. The others to have qualified are the bronze medal winning duo of Vikas Krishan (75kg) and Amit Phangal (49kg) and Silver-medallists Shiva Thapa (60kg) and Sumit Sangwan (91kg).

India’s medal count stands at four in the current edition, similar to 2015 even though the medals won were one silver and three bronze in that year.


Sachin Tendulkar visits Indian Navy’s frigate in London

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Sunday visited Indian Navy’s Tarkash in London.

Tendulkar is in the U.K. as he was conferred with the Fellowship Award at the 7th Annual Asian Awards in May – 7. 

After receiving the award, India’s cricket icon said playing for the nation for 24 years was a memorable journey and winning the world cup was “icing on the cake.”

INS Tarkash is in the U.K. for naval exercises and to mark U.K. India Year of Culture 2017.

INS Tarkash, on an Overseas Deployment in the Mediterranean and the West Coast of Africa, will remain docked in London until next week. It set sail from Mumbai last month.

Thereafter, Dwayne Smith also departed in search of quick runs. With Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik at the crease, Gujarat had their eye set on victory and outclassed Punjab. For Punjab, Sandeep Sharma finished with figures of two for 29 in his four overs. Punjab, after this loss, will have to win remaining three games to make it to the Play-offs.
