Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurates YUVA – a skill development programme YUVA is Delhi Police initiative under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana:

The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the YUVA – a skill development programme and an initiative by Delhi Police under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.

The ‘YUVA’ initiative by Delhi Police aims to connect with youth by upgrading their skill as per their competencies. It will help them to get a gainful employment under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna under the Ministry of Skill Development. Delhi Police has tied up with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for providing mass job linked skill training for the selected youth. It will provide job linked training through its Sector Skill Councils who are connected to industry and thereby provide job guarantee.

Gobindobhog rice gets geographical indication status:

Gobindobhog rice, a speciality from Burdwan district of West Bengal, has got the geographical indication (GI) status. The state government had applied for GI status for Gobindobhog rice on August 24, 2015.

 Karnataka to merge health schemes, launch ‘Arogya Bhagya’:

          Karnataka, the State government has decided to merge various health schemes and launch unified ‘Arogya Bhagya‘ to cover all the 1.4 crore households.

The Universal Health Coverage scheme would help the card holder get treatment in all the empaneled private hospitals besides government hospitals to get treatment without paying any cash. The main theme of the ‘Arogya Bhagya’ scheme is ”Treatment Firstand Payment Next”.

 PM inaugurates 1.4-km long hanging bridge in Rajasthan:

           Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 1.4-kilometre long hanging bridge across the river Chambal in Rajasthan’s Kota. The bridge which is 30 metres wide and 125 metres high, has been built at a cost of around 277.67 crore. PM Modi had earlier inaugurated 1.4-kilometre long cable stayed bridge across the river Narmada in Gujarat in March this year.

Odisha gets Rs 466 cr investment for seafood park units:

The Odisha government said the state has received proposals worth Rs 466 crore for setting up processing units at Seafood Park in Deras, which will process 90,860 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) sea food and generate over 7,000 jobs.

The seafood park is being developed by Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) with an investment of Rs 134 crore.

The major markets for seafood from Odisha include South East Asia (39 per cent) followed by USA (28 per cent), EU (11 per cent) and Japan (9 per cent) in terms of volume. In terms of value, USA with 35 per cent stands ahead of South East Asia (30 per cent) followed by EU (11 per cent), Japan (10 per cent) and the Middle East (3 per cent).

Kazakhstan opens IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank:

          Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev inaugurated the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Low Enriched Uranium Bank in the Kazakh city of Oskemen.

Nazarbayev handed over the building’s keys to IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and proposed holding a world summit on nuclear security in Astana, the capital of the Central Asian country.

The LEU Bank seeks to provide a fuel reserve for IAEA member states at market prices as a last resort should they not be able to obtain low-enriched uranium to generate energy on the international market.

US awards $727-million contract to support Afghan Air Force:

The US has awarded a contract worth over $727 million to support the Afghan Air Force and Special Mission Wing unit. This comes after President Donald Trump announced his new US strategy in Afghanistan. Notably, the US has spent over $76 billion on weapons and equipment for Afghan security forces since 2002. Work will be performed in Kabul, Afghanistan, with an estimated completion date of May 31, 2020.

GST collections hit Rs 92,283 crore in July: Arun Jaitley

India’s maiden GST revenue mop-up got off to a bumper start, with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley saying that taxes worth Rs 92,283 crore were collected in July from just 64.42 per cent of the total taxpayer base.

Tax collections for July, the first month when a unified Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented across the country in place of more than a dozen central and state levies like excise duty, service tax and VAT, are likely to further go up when all the tax payers file returns. Of the tax collected, Jaitley said, Rs 14,894 crore have come in as Central GST, Rs 22,722 crore as State GST and Rs 47,469 crore as Integrated GST. The collections so far are in excess of the finance ministry’s internal estimate of Rs 91,000 crore.

 Uber to provide free insurance for its drivers in India:

Global ride-hailing firm Uber Technologies will give free insurance to its 450,000 driver partners in India that will cover death, disability or hospitalisation due to accidents, the company said.

The insurance by ICICI Lombard General Insurance will be applicable from Sept. 1, and will provide cover ranging from 500,000 rupees ($7,814) in case of death to 50,000 rupees ($781) for outpatient treatment, the company said.

 Fringe benefits availed by employees liable to GST:

The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be applicable on any non-monetary fringe benefit an employee gets from his employer, the government said.

Monetary compensation paid to employees is not considered supply and will not attract GST, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) said. No GST is chargeable if free replacement is provided by a business to customers without consideration under warranty. Also, goods sent for a demonstration on returnable basis would not be considered supply as there is no transfer of title involved.

Deadline for declaring Aadhaar for social schemes will be extended to Dec 31:

The Union government will extend the September 30 deadline by three months for people to declare their Aadhaar numbers in order to continue receiving welfare benefits.

Attorney general K K Venugopal, the Centre’s representative, said the government will now shift the Aadhaar declaration deadline to December 31 for social services such as free cooking gas cylinders that women from poor families are entitled to.

BSNL aims to set up 1 lakh Wi-Fi hotspots by March 2019:

BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivasta said that the state-run telecom operator is going to set up 1 lakh Wi-Fi spots across the country by March, 2019. As many as 25,000 Wi-Fi hotspots will be set up in the rural areas.

The company will invest about Rs 1,800 crore in setting up 70,000 Wi-Fi hotspots and the USOF is providing a fund of Rs 900 crore, including three years of operation and maintenance for setting up 25,000 hotspots.

 Freyr Energy ties up with Axis Bank:

Solar energy services company Freyr Energy has tied up with Axis Bank to offer term loans ranging from 5 lakh to 50 lakh for tenures up to five years, for solar rooftop installations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The loans will be given to MSMEs and self-employed individuals to install Freyr rooftop solar plants for industrial and commercial purposes. It will help MSMEs significantly reduce their electricity bills. Over the past three years, Freyr has installed over 800 solar systems across 14 States in India and Ghana.

 BSE seeks another 5-year term for Chauhan as CEO:

 Top stock exchange BSE’s board has approved another five-year term for its chief Ashish Chauhan, who has steered a strong turnaround and a highly- successful IPO of the bourse with strong business expansion.

Chauhan, who joined BSE as Deputy CEO in 2009, was made MD and CEO for a period of five years with effect from November 2, 2012 to November 1, 2022.

Nitasha Biswas of Kolkata was crowned, the title Miss TransQueen India She was crowned Miss Trans Queen India 2017, winner of the first beauty pageant for transwomen in the country.

Loiloi Haorongbam from Manipur became the first runner-up, while Ragasiya, representing Tamil Nadu, was the second runner-up.

 National Research Development Corporation won Two Awards:

National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), the technology transfer and commercialization arm of the Ministry of Science & Technology won two accolades.

It has won the Assocham Services Excellence Award and its Chairman and Managing Director, H Purushotham, an international recognition.

The International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) Sweden honored Purushotham with the IAAM Medal 2017 for his outstanding R&D contributions in the Advanced Materials Science & Technology during its award ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.

           West Indies pulled off a dramatic 5-wicket win against England at Headingley. This was their first Test win on English shores since 2000.

 Martens named 2016/17 Women’s Player of the Year:

           Dutch star Lieke Martens has been named UEFA Women’s Player of the Year for the 2016/17 season.

The 24-year-old Barcelona forward, who recently helped the Netherlands to win UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 on home soil and aided Rosengård to the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals, received the award at a ceremony during the 2017/18 UEFA Champions’ League group stage draw in Monaco

14-yr-old beat 36-yr-old to become youngest TT champion:

 Japanese table tennis player Tomokazu Harimoto, aged 14 years and 61 days, defeated 36-year-old German Timo Boll in the Czech Open final to become the youngest winner of an ITTF men’s singles tournament. Harimoto broke the record of China’s Yu Ziyang, who was aged 16 years and 30 days when he won the Japan Open in 2014.
