Jallianwala Bagh Massacre 102nd Anniversary – 13 April

  • April 13 marks the day of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, and this year is the 102nd anniversary of the incident. Jallianwala Bagh Massacre refers to the incident that took place in 1919 at Amritsar’s Jallianwala Bagh, in which British troops opened fire against thousands of people who had gathered to mark the occasion of Baisakhi.
  • The incident is seen as a major turning point in the national freedom movement of India.

International Turban Day – 13 April

  • International Turban Day is celebrated on 13 April every year. This event was started in 2004 to bring awareness of the strict requirement on Sikhs to don the turban as a mandatory part of their religion.
  • The 2021 Turban Day marks the 552nd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and the festival of Baisakhi.

Piyush Goyal inaugurated an electronic marketplace “e-SANTA” to connect aqua farmers and buyers

  • Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal inaugurated e-SANTA. e-SANTA (Electronic Solution for Augmenting NaCSA farmers’ Trade-in Aquaculture) is an electronic marketplace providing a platform to connect aqua farmers and buyers. The portal will raise income, lifestyle, self-reliance, quality levels, traceability, and provide new options for aqua farmers.
  • National Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (NaCSA) is an extension arm of the Marine Products Export Development Authority.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 6th Edition of prestigious Raisina Dialogue

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented an opportunity to reshape the world order and to reorient the thinking.
  • The event is jointly organised by the Union Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation. The theme for the 2021 Edition is “#ViralWorld: Outbreaks, Outliers, and Out of Control”.

Maharashtra gets India’s first floating LNG storage and regasification unit

  • India’s first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) had arrived at H-Energy’s Jaigarh Terminal in Maharashtra. This will also be the first year-round Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Maharashtra.
  • The LNG terminal is located at JSW Jaigarh Port in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, on the west coast of India. The port is the first deepwater, 24×7 operational private port in Maharashtra.

India launched first-ever app “Little Guru” to teach the Sanskrit language

  • To promote Sanskrit, the Government of India had launched an app called “Little Guru” for people who want to learn the language. The app has been developed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and aims to make learning Sanskrit easy and entertaining by gamifying it.
  • The app has been produced by Bengaluru-based Gamapp Sportswizz and is available on the Google Play Store.

Nomura revised India’s FY22 GDP growth estimate to 12.6% from 13.5%

  • Global brokerage company Nomura cut India’s GDP forecast to 6 per cent from 13.5 per cent forecast earlier as the country faces a consistent rise in coronavirus cases and higher inflation. Nomura has pegged the calendar year GDP growth at 11.5 per cent, a decline from 12.4 per cent estimated earlier.

SEBI fined YES bank for ‘Fraudulent Acts’ on customers in ‘Super FD’ scheme

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had imposed a penalty of 25 crore on Yes Bank for perpetrating fraudulent acts on its customers by influencing them to alter their investment positions from fixed deposits (FD) to risky additional tier-1 (AT-1) bonds.
  • The market regulator also imposed a penalty of 1 crore on Vivek Kanwar, head of private wealth management, and Rs. 50 lakh each on Ashish Nasa and Jasjit Singh Banga.

RXIL became the first TReDS platform to cross monthly throughput of Rs 1,000 crore

  • Receivables Exchange of India Limited (RXIL), a leading invoice discounting platform for MSMEs, has crossed monthly transaction volumes of 1,000 crore in March.
  • The growth of transaction volumes from 69 crore in April 2020, to Rs 1,105 crore in March 2021 indicates the revival and resumption of the economic activity. In 2020-21, RXIL has also emerged as the leading platform with more than Rs. 6,500 crore of throughput.

Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS)

  • TReDS is an electronic platform for facilitating the financing / discounting of trade receivables of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through multiple financiers. These receivables can be due from corporates and other buyers, including Government Departments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

BPCL partnered with Accenture to transform its sales and distribution network

  • Accenture had partnered with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) to help in the digital transformation of the country’s second-largest oil and gas company’s extensive sales and distribution network.
  • Accenture will use its capabilities in data, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies to build, design and implement a digital platform, called IRIS.

Sushil Chandra appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner

  • President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Sushil Chandra as the 24th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He replaced Sunil Arora who was retired recently. ECI consists of Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
  • Chandra previously served as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). He was appointed as an Election Commissioner on 14 February 2019, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, and worked for the successful conduct of the general elections.

Pramerica Life Insurance appointed Kalpana Sampat as MD and CEO

  • Private life insurer Pramerica Life Insurance announced the appointment of Kalpana Sampat as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Sampat succeeded Annop Pabby. Prior to this appointment, she was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company.
  • Sampat was the CEO of Swiss Reinsurance Company, India branch, and was instrumental in its launch in 2015.

Canon India appointed Manabu Yamazaki as the new president and CEO

  • Canon India has appointed Manabu Yamazaki as the new president and CEO. In his new role, Yamazaki will spearhead Canon’s business strategy and operations in India.
  • Manabu Yamazaki takes over the baton from Kazutada Kobayashi, who was at the helm for 9 years leading growth in the Indian market. Before his new role, he was working as the chief regional officer for the brand in Eastern China, overseeing various functions in the APAC region.

Fantasy sports platform SportzXchange roped Prithvi Shaw as its brand ambassador

  • SportzXchange, one of the newest and fastest-growing additions to the fantasy sports landscape in India, had roped in Prithvi Shaw, a powerhouse of energy and potential as its brand ambassador.
  • SportzXchange will create engaging content featuring Prithvi Shaw as part of an integrating campaign with a theme “Yahaan Hai Kuch Xtra” that will help build awareness about the differentiated offerings and amplify the reach of the brand during upcoming IPL/Fantasy matches.

NCAER appointed World Bank’s economist Poonam Gupta as the new director-general

  • The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) has appointed Poonam Gupta as its new director-general.
  • Gupta, the first woman Director General of NCAER, succeeded Shekhar Shah who led NCAER since 2011 and will complete his second five-year term in early May.

Kane Williamson awarded Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for the fourth time

  • New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been awarded the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for the fourth time in six years, while women’s allrounder Amelia Kerr and rising star Devon Conway also claimed top honours at the New Zealand Cricket Awards for the 2020-21 season.
  • Williamson, the highest-ranked Test batsman was also named the International Test Player of the Year and awarded the Redpath Cup for first-class batting.

Legendary shooting coach Sanjay Chakravarty passed away at 79

  • Legendary shooting coach Sanjay Chakravarty passed away in Mumbai. The Dronacharya awardee had trained some of the finest Indian shooters including Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, Anjali Bhagwat, and Suma Shirur, Deepali Deshpande, Anuja Jung, and Ayonika Paul.
  • Chakravarty was honoured with the Dronacharya Award in 2017 for his contribution to the discipline.
