National Panchayati Raj Day – 24 April

  • National Panchayati Raj Day is the national day of the Panchayati Raj System in India celebrated annually by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj on 24 April. Then-Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on 24 April 2010.
  • The annual celebration is done to commemorate the day on which the 73rd Constitutional Amendment was passed which added Part IX (Panchayats) to the Constitution in 1992.

World Day for Laboratory Animals – 24 April

  • World Day for Animals in Laboratories is observed every year on 24 April. The surrounding week has come to be known as “World Week for Animals in Laboratories”. The National Anti-Vivisection Society describes the day as an “International Day of Commemoration” for animals in laboratories.

World Veterinary Day – 24 April

  • World Veterinary Day is observed annually on the last Saturday of April, every year across the world. This year, it falls on 24 April. With the objective, ‘to provide global leadership for the veterinary profession and promote animal health and welfare and public health, through advocacy, education, and partnership’, World Veterinary Association (WVA) set out with its endeavour.
  • The day was created by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) in 2000 to celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals and society.

India’s demographic advantage to overtake China’s by 2035; China’s Central Bank report

  • A report released by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), China’s central bank, stated that China should immediately liberalise its birth policies to tackle the problems of an ageing population and plan to compete economically with a demographically young India and the immigration-friendly US.
  • In 2035 and 2050, India will have 06 billion and 1.11 billion labour force respectively, which is 120 million and 270 million more than those of China.

RBI cancels the licence of Maharashtra-based Bhagyodaya Friends Urban Co-operative Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the licence of Maharashtra-based Bhagyodaya Friends Urban Co-operative Bank Limited due to inadequate capital. The bank has failed to comply with the requirements and the continuance of the bank is prejudicial to the interests of its depositors.
  • On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of customers deposits up to a monetary ceiling of 5 lakhs from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) subject to the provisions of the DICGC Act, 1961.

Ind Ra revises down India’s FY22 GDP growth forecast to 10.1%

  • A wholly-owned subsidiary of the Fitch Group, India Ratings and Research revised down India’s FY22 real GDP growth forecast to 1 per cent, from an earlier projection of 10.4 per cent, citing the second wave of COVID-19 infections and slower pace of vaccination.
  • The economy is estimated to have contracted by 6 per cent in FY21.

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) Research has revised India’s FY22 growth to 4% from 11% projected earlier in view of the increasing COVID-19 related curbs across states.

Russia’s Roscomos to launch its own space station in 2025

  • Russia’s space agency, Roscomos planned to launch its own orbital station in 2025 as Moscow considers withdrawing from the International Space Station programme to go it alone.
  • The space module is being assembled by the Energia corporation with the cost estimation of $5 billion.

RBI approves appointment of Atanu Chakraborty as part-time Chairman of HDFC Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Atanu Chakraborty as part-time Chairman of HDFC Bank. The appointment is for a period of three years with effect from 5 May 2021 or the date of his taking charge, whichever is later.
  • A 1985 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, Chakraborty retired as Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs in April 2020. Previously, he also served as Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).

  • Popular Gujarati and Hindi film actor Amit Mistry passed away at the age of 47. He is known for starring in films like “Shor In The City”, “Bey Yaar” and the Amazon Prime Video series “Bandish Bandits”.

Music composer Shravan Rathod of Nadeem-Shravan fame passes away at 66

  • Shravan Rathod of the iconic music composer duo of Nadeem-Shravan passed away due to Covid-19. Nadeem-Shravan got their big break with Aashiqui (1990) and went on to compose music for Saajan (1991), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Pardes (1997) and Raja Hindustani (1996), and many other hit films.
