Global Logistics Summit Held In New Delhi

The global logistics summit was held in New Delhi.

It was organized by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, along with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the World Bank Group.

The Summit acts as a platform to for discussions with global experts, academics, government officials and private sector and industry representatives.

Indian, Korean coast guards hold joint exercise off Chennai coast

The Indo-Korean joint anti-piracy, search and rescue exercise ‘SAHYOG- HYEOBLYEOG 2018’ was conducted off the Chennai coast.

The Korean Coast Guard ship ‘BADARO’ took part in the exercise.

The mission of the joint exercise is to develop working level co-operation and enhance inter-operability in the fields of maritime search and rescue, anti-piracy operations.

Director General of Indian Coast Guard Rajendra Singh and Commissioner of Korean Coast Guard General Park Kyung reviewed the exercise.


Nepal’s new PM Visits India for First time

Nepal’s new Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli is on the first foreign visit of his latest term to India.

During the three-day visit Oli will meet his counterpart Narendra Modi, and possible deals on the use of Indian waterways by landlocked Nepal as well as an expansion of an India-backed railway to Kathmandu have been mooted.


India: World’s second largest producer of crude steel

India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s second largest producer of crude steel in February, according to the Steel Users Federation of India (SUFI).

At present, China is the largest producer of crude steel in the world, accounting for more than 50% of the production.
According to the World Steel Association, India produced 8.4 MT of crude steel in February 2018, up 3.4% over February 2017.


Coal Ministry Launches UTTAM App For Quality Monitoring

The Union Minister for Railways and Coal Shri Piyush Goyal has launched UTTAM App for Coal Quality Monitoring.

UTTAM stands for – Unlocking Transparency by Third Party Assessment of Mined Coal (uttam.coalindia.in).

UTTAM is an example of leveraging technology to ensure transparency and efficiency in coal quality monitoring process to bring coal governance closer to people.

It is to facilitate a bidirectional channel between Coal India Limited and a common citizen.

Qatar introduces national service for women

Qatar is introducing national service for women for the first time.

Women aged over 18 will be able to volunteer for national service which comes into immediate affect, while men will now serve a year instead of three months in the military service.

Every Qatari male between 18 and 35 is required to perform a compulsory military service while the national service for females is voluntary.

Azerbaijan and India sign two agreements

Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of India have signed two agreements.

First, on exemption from visa requirement for holders of diplomatic, official and service passports. The Agreement was signed by Azerbaijan`s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj

Second, Memorandum of Understanding between ADA University, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Foreign Service Institute, Ministry of External Affairs, Republic of India. Rector of ADA University Hafiz Pashayev and Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs of India Ruchi Ghanashyam.

Russia, Turkey, Iran vow to secure Syria’s territorial integrity            

The presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran have vowed to secure the territorial integrity of Syria during a trilateral summit in Ankara.

The leaders called on the international community, particularly the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies to increase assistance to Syria by sending additional humanitarian aid, facilitating humanitarian mine action, restoring basic infrastructure assets, including social and economic facilities, and preserving historical heritage.

Doha bank sets up its First branch Chennai

Qatar-based Doha Bank has set up the first branch in the city taking the total number of branches in the country to three. Doha Bank is the largest private commercial bank in the State of Qatar.

Doha Bank currently has a branch in Mumbai, Kochi and Chennai, respectively.

The Chennai branch will assist the bank’s growing customer base in India offering a host of services including corporate, retail, treasury, trade, finance and foreign exchange services

Flipkart Partners With MakeMyTrip

The Online travel portal MakeMyTrip has formed a partnership with Flipkart to allow customers to book domestic flight tickets and other travel services directly through the e-commerce firm’s portal.

The partnership will start with domestic flight bookings in the next few weeks, followed by hotels, bus and holiday bookings.

Additionally, under the tie-up, all offerings of three of MakeMyTrip’s brands – MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and redBus – will now be available to Flipkart consumers.

FIEO and PayPal inks Mou

Digital payments company PayPal and exporters’ body the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) have tied up to promote exports, leveraging the technology platform.

PayPal will work with FIEO to educate SMEs on how to leverage global opportunities, help them receive money in a safe and timely manner with PayPal products.

OBITUARY

Japanese animation director Isao Takahata passed away

Oscar-nominated Japanese animation director Isao Takahata  has passed away.

He co-founded the Studio Ghibli and was best known for his work “Grave of the Fireflies”.

Takahata’s latest film, “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” earned him an Academy nomination in 2014 for best animated feature.
