International Youth Day-12 August:

  • International Youth Day was designated by the United Nations in the year 1999, in an attempt to raise awareness regarding the cultural and legal issue concerning youth. The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000 and has been observed annually ever since.

World Elephant Day- 12 August:

  • World Elephant Day is observed every year on August 12. It was launched to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants. It was officially founded by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar launches “SURAKHSYA” portal on Human Elephant Conflict on World Elephant Day:

  • Minister for Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar released a document on Best Practices and launched a portal on Human-Elephant Conflict named SURAKHSYA for World Elephant Day 2020. The world Elephant Day is observed on 12th August every year.

 

Assam council of ministers approves “Assam Non-Government Education Institutions (Regulation of Fees) Rules 2020”:

  • Assam council of ministers approved the Assam Non-Government Education Institutions (Regulation of Fees) Rules 2020.
  • This would regulate the fees structure of the private educational institutes. The council of ministers meeting also approved the Assam Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) scheme 2020.

Gujarat Government Launches New Scheme “Mukhya Mantri Kisan Sahay Yojana” to Compensate Farmers For Crop Loss:

  • Gujarat government launched a scheme ‘Mukhya Mantri Kisan Sahay Yojana’ under which farmers facing crop losses due to drought, excess rain or rain to get compensation without the collection of any premium from them. It replaces PM Fasal Bima Yojana.

Paytm launches ‘India’s first Pocket Android PoS device for easy and contactless payments:

  • Paytm launched an Android-based pocket-sized point of sale (POS) device named ‘Paytm All-in-One Portable Android Smart POS’ that is enabled with integrated billing software, camera for QR scanning and supports 4G SIM cards Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It is available for an introductory monthly rental of ₹ 499.

 

BSE join hands with bullion trade associations to deepen commodity derivatives market:

  • Leading Stock Exchange BSE signed an MoU with Akola Sarafa Association and Akola Sarafa Va Suvarnakar Yuva Sangh, two bullion trade associations for deepening commodity derivatives market. They represent members engaged in retail sale and trade of bullion.

Russia launches world’s first registered COVID-19 vaccine ‘Sputnik V’:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin announced approval of a coronavirus vaccine for use, claiming it as a world first. Developed by the Moscow-based Gamaleya Institute, it has been named “Sputnik-V” a reference to the world’s first satellite by Soviet Union.

Mumbai becomes the first city to have female icons on traffic signals:

  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) installed traffic signals that display female icons sporting triangular frock, a shift from default representation of men. Mumbai has become the first city in India to do so.

Renowned lyricist & Urudu poet Rahat Indori passes away:

  • In Madhya Pradesh, Noted Urdu poet & lyricist Rahat Indori died of cardiac arrest in Indore. He was tested positive for COVID-19. With a 50-year career in poetry, Indori was known for the lyrics of hit films like Munnabhai MBBS, Kareeb, Ghatak and Ishq.

 

Noted Tamil film lyricist P K Muthusami passes away:

  • Noted Tamil film lyricist PK Muthusami passed away in Namakkal. He was to complete his 100th birthday this year. Famous songs composed by Muthusami include ‘Mapilai vandar’ and ‘Chinna chinna nadai nadandu’ etc.

 

Human Rights Activist and Author Ilina Sen Passes Away:

  • Author, activist and academic Ilina Sen who had been suffering from cancer for several years, passed away. Ilina, who spent many years in Chhattisgarh and worked with several trade unions and Adivasi organizations, had moved to academics a decade ago.

 

Legendary WWE wrestler James ‘Kamala’ Harris passes away at 70:

  • Legendry American WWE player, James Harris, popularly known as James “Kamala” Harris, has passed away. He was nicknamed as “The Ugandan Giant”. Harris made his debut with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF)  in 1984.
