KVIC adopts Jagatpur village for Swachhata Abhiyan

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has adopted Jagatpur village in Delhi for its Swachhata Abhiyaan. Jagatpur is destined to be one of the most beautiful villages in Delhi and NCR.

The sanitation drive by KVIC began with a plantation drive and ended with cleanliness drive along the bank of the Yamuna river.

KVIC is also installing 20 park benches on the bank on Yamuna river. Under KVIC’s Swachhata Mission, the next cleanliness drive will begin in Mumbai’s Juhu Beach.

President on 3-Nation Visit: Arrived In Cuba

President Ram Nath Kovind arrived in Cuba on final leg of his three-nation tour to Greece, Suriname and Cuba.

He is accompanied by a delegation including Minister of State for Steel Vishnu Deo Sai and two Members of Parliament. Mr Kovind was received in Santiago by Vice President of Cuba, Ms. Beatriz Johnson.

The President was escorted first to the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery where he witnessed Change of Guards ceremony. He then paid respects to Jose Marti Memorial.

Jose Marti was Cuba’s legendary poet who led the 1895 Cuban revolution. President Kovind also paid respects at the memorials of Fidel Castro and others. He has left for Havana, the capital of Cuba.

He participated in the Yoga Day celebration, along with his Suriname counterpart Desire Delano Bouterse in Paramaribo.

Governor’s Rule imposed in J&K

President Ram Nath Kovind has approved governor’s rule in J&K. The move comes after the BJP pulled out of its three-year alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir.

J&K governor NN Vohra has placed the J&K assembly under suspended animation. Unlike other states, where President’s rule is imposed in such situations, the J&K constitution provides for governor’s rule for six months, but only after the consent of the President of India.

Governor NN Vohra will be presiding over the state for the fourth time, during his 10-year tenure, having overseen governor’s rule in 2008, 2015 and 2016.


India & Tajikistan Agree For Sustainable Water Development

India and Tajikistan have reaffirmed their commitment to promote bilateral relations and agreed to enhance economic cooperation, particularly in sustainable water development.

Shri Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, held wide-ranging talks with Shri Sirodjidin Muhridin, Foreign Minister of Tajikistan in Dushanbe.

Yoga session at Rajasthan enters Guinness Book of World Records

Rajasthan witnessed a world record by conducting the largest yoga session to mark the 4th International Yoga Day at Kota where over one lakh people together performed the yogic exercises. Yoga guru Ramdev conducted the yoga session that was attended by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, ministers.

The Executive officers in India on behalf of the officials Guinness Book of World Record – Swapneel and Ribika from London presented the certificate mentioning the largest yoga lesson was achieved by Government of Rajasthan, Patanjali Yogpeeth and District Administration at Kota (all India), at Kota, Rajasthan, India.


BANKING AND ECONOMY

RBI Revises Housing Loan Limits Under Priority Sector Lending

The Reserve Bank has altered priority sector eligibility and classification norms.

The housing loan limits for eligibility under priority sector lending will be revised to Rs 35 lakh in metropolitan centres (Rs 28 lakh earlier)(with population of ten lakh and above), and to Rs 25 lakh from Rs 20 lakh earlier in other centres.

The overall cost of the dwelling unit in the metropolitan centre and at other centres does not exceed Rs 45 lakh and Rs 30 lakh, respectively.

The existing limit for family income of Rs 2 lakh per annum for loans to housing projects for home construction economically weaker sections and low income groups, is revised to Rs 3 lakh per annum and Rs 6 lakh per annum respectively in alignment with the income criteria specified under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.


Microsoft Acquires Education Start-up Flipgrid

Microsoft has announced the acquisition of Flipgrid, a Minneapolis-based educational software startup.

It has 20 million users all over the world, including teachers, students, and parents, from Pre-K all the way up to PhD candidates. In its three-year lifespan, Flipgrid had raised a modest $17 million in venture funding.

For Flipgrid customers, the biggest change is that the service will now be completely free for schools.


SEBI Simplifies Buyback Regulations, Changes IPO Price Band Timeline

The Securities and Exchange Board (SEBI) has approved amendments to buyback and takeover regulations and changed the time for announcing the price band of initial public offering (IPO) from 5 to 2 days.

As per the changes, the buyback period has been redefined as the period between the “board of directors resolution/date of declaration of results for a special resolution authorizing the buyback of shares and the date on which payment consideration is made to the shareholders”.

SEBI had made a proposal to bring changes based on suggestions made by the regulator’s Primary Market Advisory Committee (PMAC).


APPOINTMENTS

BVR Subhrahmanyam appointed J-K Chief Secretariat

Chhattisgarh-cadre IAS officer B V R Subrahmanyam was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir in place of BB Vyas.

Vyas, who was last month given one-year extension in service, has been appointed adviser to Governor N N Vohra. Former IPS officer Vijay Kumar will be another adviser to the Governor.

Subrahmanyam is at present the additional chief secretary (Home) in Chhattisgarh.


Paul Polman appointed as Chairman of International Chamber of Commerce

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has announced that Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises has stepped down as the ICC Chairperson with immediate effect as he completes his two-year tenure.

Mittal will assume the role of ICC Honorary Chair. Mittal was the third business leader from India in the history of ICC to be appointed as the Chairman of ICC.

He will be succeeded by Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever as ICC Chairman and Ajay Banga, President and CEO MasterCard as the next ICC First Vice-Chair.

Kidambi Srikanth named as ‘India’s Sportsperson of the Year’

The Commonwealth Games 2018 gold-medal winning shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, was adjudged as the Sportsperson of the Year for 2017 by the Sports Illustrated India magazine.

The eighth annual Sportsperson of the Year awards took place at the Roseate House, Aerocity in New Delhi.

In 2017, the shuttler won 4 Supe series titles – Indonesia, Australia, Denmark and France and finished the season as World No. 2. In April, he became the only male Indian badminton player to rise to the No. 1 in badminton rankings. He also became only the second Indian to achieve the feat.


Surat To Receive ‘City Award’ Under India Smart Cities Award 2018

Surat has been awarded for showcasing “great momentum” in the implementation of projects under the Smart Cities Mission. It was announced by the Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA).

Joint winners in ‘Innovative Idea’ category were Bhopal for its Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and Ahmedabad for Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA) Project. Under ‘urban environment’ category, Bhopal, Pune and Coimbatore bagged the award for public bike sharing project, while Jabalpur was selected for its waste-to energy plant project.

Under ‘Social Aspects’ category, NDMC and Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) bagged the award for implementation of ‘smart classrooms’ project, while Visakhapatnam was selected for its smart campus project and Pune for ‘lighthouse project’.

Bhopal and Jaipur got the awards under ‘Culture and Economy’ category, Ahmedabad and Surat under ‘Transport and Mobility’ category, Ahmedabad under ‘Water and Sanitation’ category and Pune under ‘Governance’ and ‘Built Environment’ categories .


Nashik’s Vishwas Mandlik and Mumbai Yoga Institute win PM awards

The Ayush Ministry has announced that Vishwas Mandlik of Nashik and The Yoga Institute in Mumbai are the recipients of the Prime Minister’s Award for outstanding contribution to promotion and development of yoga. The winners will be felicitated with a trophy, certificate and a cash award each. The value of each cash award would be Rs 25 lakh.

Mandlik won the award in the category Individual – National and The Yoga Institute won in the category Organisation – National.

Mandlik set up Yoga Vidhya Gurukul in 1983 for yoga education. Yoga Chaitanya Seva Pratisthan, a trust, was set up by him in 1994 to propagate yoga in remote parts of India.

The Yoga Institute in Mumbai, set up in 1918 by Yogendraji, has completed 100 years producing more than 50,000 yoga teachers and has over 500 publications to its credit.


Martin Scorsese get Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rome Film Festival

The Veteran director Martin Scorsese will be conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rome Film Fest.

The announcement was made by director Antonio Monda and Laura Delli Colli, the head of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma

He is best known for modern American classics such as “Taxi Driver”, “Raging Bull”, “Goodfellas”, “The Aviator” and “The Departed”.
