International Human Solidarity Day – 20 December

  • International Human Solidarity Day is observed on 20 December to encourage cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty eradication.
  • The United Nations General Assembly declared 20 December as International Human Solidarity Day to foster a culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing in the battle against poverty.
  • A World Solidarity Fund was introduced on 20 December 2002 by the United Nations General Assembly to alleviate poverty worldwide. It became part of the trust fund of the United Nations Development Programme in February 2003.

Good Governance Week – 20 December to 26 December

  • Union Government launched the Good Governance Week from 20–26 December with the motto of taking good administration down to the villages.
  • “Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur” is the theme of Good Governance Week, which will be commemorated as part of the 75th ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ commemoration.
  • ‘Good Governance Week 2021’ will signify India’s success in encouraging citizen-centric governance and enhancing service delivery in consonance with Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations to commemorate 75 years of progressive India.

Hemant Soren launches the SAHAY scheme to focus on sports in insurgency-hit areas

  • Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren launched the Sports Action towards Harnessing Aspiration of Youths (SAHAY) scheme to promote sports among youths of the worst insurgency-hit districts in Jharkhand.
  • This scheme was launched in Saraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, Khunti, Gumla and Simdega districts. It will also be replicated in other districts as well.
  • Sports nurseries will be set up in the affected areas to nurture talented youngsters.

India’s first International Arbitration and Mediation Centre opens in Hyderabad

  • India’s first International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (IAMC) was opened in Hyderabad by the Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
  • The IAMC has come up with 25,000 sq. ft temporary accommodation at the VK Towers in an information technology hub, Gachibowli.
  • This centre will lead the way for arbitration and mediation in India and will become the premier centre not only in India but across Asia and the world.

Equitas Small Finance Bank was empanelled as a banking partner of the Maharashtra Government

  • Equitas Small Finance Bank was empanelled as a banking partner of the Maharashtra Government to offer its services to the state government employees of Maharashtra.
  • This agreement will enable Equitas Small Finance Bank to distribute salaries and allowances to the existing employees apart from making provision of pension to pensioners.
  • Bandhan Bank, Karur Vysya Bank and the South Indian Bank are the other three banks in charge of paying salaries and allowances to the government employees.

International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) establishes a panel for creating a framework for the transfer of stressed loans

  • The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) established a panel chaired by the former executive director of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Padmanabhan to develop a framework for transferring stressed loans from domestic lenders to IFSC financial institutions.
  • This committee’s mandate is to examine the provisions of the RBI directions pertaining to the transfer of stressed loans by lending institutions to entities in IFSCA, identify areas/issues of the directions that require further clarification from the RBI and recommend both the contents of the framework to be put in place by IFSCA to enable such transfers as well as amendments to the RBI directions to make such transfers easier to effect.

  • Gautam Adani was ranked as the 14th wealthiest person in the world according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index 2021.
  • He ranked 13th in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index rankings 2020, which was overtaken by the billionaire businessman Zhong Shanshan in 2021.
  • This list was topped by Elon Musk, followed by Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault, Bill Gates and Larry Page.
  • India’s richest industrialist Mukesh Ambani was the 12th richest billionaire in the world. He also remained the richest billionaire in Asia.
  • Wipro Chairman Azim Premji was ranked 33rd and is the third Indian on the rankings.

Chile elects Gabriel Boric as its President

  • Chileans elected Gabriel Boric as their next President entrusting the young socialist lawmaker with shaping Chile’s future, which has been roiled by protests and is currently drafting a new Constitution.
  • He succeeds Sebastian Pinera.
  • Gabriel Boric will become Chile’s youngest modern President when he takes office in March and only the second millennial to lead in Latin America after El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele.

Hyundai Motor India appoints Unsoo Kim as its Managing Director

  • Hyundai Motor India appointed Unsoo Kim as its Managing Director from 1 January 2022.
  • He will succeed Seon Seob Kim (SS Kim), who will lead a global role at Hyundai Motor Company, headquartered in Seoul after his successful stint of three years from 2018 in Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL).

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) signs an MoU with National Cadet Corps (NCC) to reuse plastic waste

  • The National Cadet Corps (NCC) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reuse plastic waste collected by NCC cadets during the Puneet Sagar Abhiyan and other Swachhta activities for NHAI road construction across India.
  • NCC has launched a nationwide programme Puneet Sagar Abhiyan to clean seashores/beaches of plastic and other wastes as well as create raise awareness about the need of preserving seashores free from plastic waste.
  • NCC has also approached the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) and the National Institute of Technologies (NITs) for their cooperation in recycling and gainful utilisation of the plastic waste collected. IIT Kharagpur has already promised to contribute its technical expertise in this area.

  • Edelweiss General Insurance (EGI) has partnered with PhonePe to offer quick and easy digital motor insurance products to all its customers.

  • EGI has created on-demand, need-based, bite-sized insurance solutions and is co-creating digital ecosystem offers with partners.
  • Customers of PhonePe can now buy EGI’s motor insurance policy with just a few clicks and no paperwork. Customers can also choose from a variety of add-on advantages, including depreciation protection, engine protection, consumable expense protection, roadside assistance and key and lock protection to meet their specific needs.

Kidambi Srikanth clinches a silver medal in the men’s singles at the BWF World Badminton Championships 2021

  • Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth clinched a silver medal in the men’s singles at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships 2021 played at Palacio de LosDeportes Carolina Marin in Huelva, Spain.
  • He lost the gold medal to Loh Kean Yew from Singapore.
  • Lakshya Sen finished with the bronze medal in the same event.
  • This is the first time that India got two medals in the men’s singles event in the same edition of the Badminton World Championships.
  • Before this, India got two bronze medals in the men’s singles event at the Badminton World Championships with Prakash Padukone in 1983 and Sai Praneeth in 2019.

India wins 16 medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 held at Tashkent

  • India ended the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 with 16 medals, out of which were four gold, seven silver and five bronze medals, held at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Former Georgia Republican US Senator Johnny Isakson passed away

  • The former Republican United States Senator Johnny Isakson from Georgia passed away at the age of 76.
  • He was a Senator for over 15 years from 2004 before stepping down in 2019 due to health issues.
  • He began his political career in 1976.
  • He served in the Georgia Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972.

Former Supreme Court Judge Justice G. T. Nanavati passed away

  • Justice Girish Thakorlal Nanavati, a former Supreme Court Judge who investigated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the 2002 Godhra riots, passed away at the age of 86.
  • He was appointed as permanent Judge of the Gujarat High Court from July 1979 and transferred to the Orissa High Court in December 1993 and was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court with effect from January 1994.
  • He was transferred as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in September 1994.
  • He was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court with effect from March 1995 and retired on February 2000.
