National Pollution Prevention Day – 2 December

  • National Pollution Prevention Day is observed on 2 December to remember the people who lost their lives in the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
  • This day is marked to raise awareness of the necessity of pollution control measures among citizens and businesses. It also strives to raise awareness about the importance of protecting natural resources such as air, soil, noise and water.

World Computer Literacy Day – 2 December

  • World Computer Literacy Day is observed on 2 December to increase global awareness about the importance of computers in our lives and to improve digital literacy in all communities.
  • This day promotes technological skills, especially in children and women.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery – 2 December

  • International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed on 2 December every year to commemorate the brutal history of slavery practiced by colonial rulers of past centuries. This day aims to eradicate modern forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.
  • Theme for the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery 2021: ‘Ending Slavery’s Legacy of Racism: A Global Imperative for Justice’.

India joins the G20 Troika along with Indonesia and Italy to assume the G20 Presidency on 1 December 2022

  • India has joined the G20 Troika along with Indonesia and Italy to assume the G20 Presidency on 1 December 2022 from Indonesia and will convene the G20 Leaders’ Summit for the first time in India in 2023.
  • The G20 Troika consists of Indonesia, Italy and India —the current, previous and incoming G20 presidencies, respectively.
  • India will be a part of the G20 Troika (preceding, current and incoming G20 presidencies) from 1 December 2022 till 30 November 2024.
  • India will work closely with Italy and Indonesia to ensure consistency and continuity of the G20’s agenda as a Troika member.

G20 members: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, The United Kingdom,  The United States and The European Union.


All India Radio is set to start a youth programme named ‘AIRNxt’

  • All India Radio (AIR) has announced a programme called AIRNxt to offer youth a platform to air their voices as a part of the celebrations under the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (75 years of Indian independence).
  • Youngsters from local colleges and institutions will be able to participate in the programming at AIR stations, where they will be able to discuss and create youth-oriented broadcasts.

European Commission is set to release €300 billion infrastructure fund to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative

  • The European Commission will seek to release €300 billion in public and private infrastructure investments to offer developing countries an alternative to China’s massive Belt and Road Initiative.
  • The project approval aims at mobilising public and private investments by 2027.

  • Barbados is now the world’s newest republic after officially removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.

International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) approves a $135 million loan to upgrade the rural power distribution network in West Bengal

  • International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) has approved a $135 million loan to West Bengal to improve the operational efficiency and reliability of electricity supply in selected areas of West Bengal.
  • This is a variable spread loan that has a maturity of 17 years, including a grace period of seven years.
  • The project aims to reduce distribution system losses, increase the capacity of the distribution network to meet the growing load demand, improve the overall reliability of the system, make the network resilient to climate disasters and improve the institutional capacity of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL).

Asian Development Bank approves a $250 million loan for India to support the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a pact with the Government of India to provide a loan of $250 million (about ₹1,872 crores) to support India’s National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP).
  • The National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) of India aims to develop world-class industrial nodes supported by efficient urban agglomerations and multimodal connectivity, including international gateways such as ports and airports and inclusive climate-resilient and sustainable infrastructure.
  • It is also developing guidelines for green corridor frameworks and climate-resilient infrastructure as part of NICDP and concentrating on improving skills for female labour participation.

India1 Payments instals more than 10,000 White Label ATMs

  • India1 Payments Limited (formerly BTI Payments Private Limited) has crossed the ATM deployment milestone of 10,000 White Label ATMs.
  • It began its operations in 2014.
  • This milestone makes India1 ATM, the second-largest white label ATM (WLA) brand in semi-urban and rural areas.
  • India’s first and largest white label ATM (WLA) network is ‘Indicash’, promoted by Tata Communications Payment Solutions Limited (TCPSL).

  • The Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA) has elected Srinivasan Swamy as the Chairman for a term of four years.

India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) appoints Sambit Patra as its Chairman

  • Sambit Patra was appointed as the Chairman of the India Tourism and Development Corporation (ITDC) for three years.
  • He is currently serving as an Independent Director of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).
  • The 1990 batch IAS officer Ganji Kamala V. Rao will be appointed as the Managing Director of ITDC till further orders.

The bilateral maritime exercise ‘CARAT’ begins between Bangladesh and the United States

  • The 27th edition of the bilateral maritime exercise between the Bangladesh Navy and the United States military personnel named Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) began in the Bay of Bengal.
  • This nine-day maritime exercise focuses on a wide range of naval capabilities and includes cooperative actions that demonstrate the US and Bangladesh’s capacity to work together to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Anju Bobby George wins the World Athletics’ Woman of the Year award 2021

  • Indian athlete Anju Bobby George won the Woman of the Year award 2021 by the World Athletics.
  • She is the only Indian to have won a medal in the World Athletics Championships with a bronze medal in the long jump event in the 2003 edition. She was named for the award in the world body’s annual awards night on 1 December.
