National News


India is set to chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in January 2022

  • India will be chairing the Counter-Terrorism Committee in January 2022 at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after 10 years, as India last chaired this committee in 2012.
  • This (UNSC) committee is tasked with monitoring the implementation of resolution 1373, which requested countries to implement a number of measures aimed at enhancing their legal and institutional ability to counter terrorist activities at home and around the world.
  • India will chair three important communities at the UNSC in 2022, including the Taliban Sanctions Committee, Libya Sanctions Committee and the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

HDFC Life Insurance signs a bancassurance deal with South Indian Bank

  • HDFC Life Insurance signed a bancassurance deal with South Indian Bank (SIB) to enable SIB customers to avail of HDFC Life’s life insurance products, including solutions for protection, savings and investment, retirement and critical illness.
  • HDFC Life Insurance aims to provide SIB’s customer base with innovative products and superior levels of service via both the physical and digital routes.

  • The ‘Green Fixed Deposits’ were launched by IndusInd Bank and the deposit revenues will be utilised to fund projects and businesses that support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • These ‘Green Fixed Deposits’ will be offered to both retail and corporate customers.
  • This launch of ‘Green Deposits’is part of IndusInd Bank’s larger commitment to creating value for all its stakeholders and remaining focused on driving the sustainable economic growth of India.

Vikram Misri was appointed as the Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA)

  • India’s former envoy to China Vikram Misri was appointed as the Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) of India.
  • Vikram Misri will succeed Pankaj Saran.
  • He served as the private secretary to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from May 2014 to July 2014 and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from October 2012 to May 2014.
  • He is a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer and served as India’s ambassador to Beijing in 2019.
  • He has also served as India’s ambassador to Myanmar and Spain.

Vice-Admiral Puneet K. Bahl takes over as the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy

  • Vice-Admiral Puneet K. Bahl took over as the Commandant of Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala, Kerala.
  • He is an experienced maritime reconnaissance pilot and maritime reconnaissance pilot and has flown six different types of aircraft.
  • On flying duty, he served onboard the INS Garuda, INS Rajali, AFS Yelhanka and CGAS 700, as well as shipboard the INS Vikrant, Betwa, Godavari, Sujata and Porbandar.
  • He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2020, the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015, the Commendation by the Chief of the Naval Staff in 2005 and the Lentaigne Medal at DSSC Wellington in 1998.

  • Atul Kumar Goel was appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB) till December 2024.
  • He will replace Mallikarjuna Rao.

Kerala tops in the NITI Aayog’s fourth Health Index 2019–2020

  • According to the fourth Health Index report from the think tank NITI Aayog, Kerala is the state with the best overall health performance for the fourth year in a row, while India’s most populated state, Uttar Pradesh, is at the bottom of the index.
  • Tamil Nadu and Telangana have emerged as the second and third states in the NITI Aayog’s fourth Health Index.
  • Mizoram emerged as the best performer in the overall performance among the smaller states.
  • This health index comprises select indicators in three domains —health outcomes, governance and information and key inputs and processes.
  • This report was prepared in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with technical assistance from the World Bank.

OneWeb launches 36 satellites into orbit to deliver global high-speed internet access

  • The Orbit (LEO) has launched 36 communication satellites into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
  • This launch brought the total in-orbit constellation by OneWeb to 394 satellites.
  • This is the company’s twelfth overall and ninth launch since December 2020.
  • This launch represents 60% of OneWeb’s planned 648 LEO satellite fleet that will deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity.
  • OneWeb plans to launch global satellite broadband services by the end of 2022.
